Does Internet democracy work?

How effective is democracy on the Internet?

A few weeks ago, I challenged Jeff Jarvis, one of Web 2.0’s most fervent democratizers, to debate my forthcoming book Cult of the Amateur. Jarvis, who regards me as the digital anti-christ and a “Stalinist“, wasn’t sure if he wanted to debate me. So he instigated a debate about the debate on his Buzzmachine blog. This debate about the debate turned into a debate about the debate about the debate.

Meanwhile, no debate. The chaotic mechanics of pure web democracy tied Jeff in knots. Alas, the Internet was deprived of an intellectual exchange between two people with diametrically opposed ideas about the value of citizen media.

So where is Joe Stalin when we need him most?

Fortunately, however, not everyone that I challenged to a debate was as indecisive as Jarvis. I am very proud to have been involved in a really energetic and intellectually arresting debate with Kevin Kelly, which is being published all this week on Jewcy.

Kelly is no less critical of my ideas than Jarvis. But at least he was able to make the decision to debate me independent of the crowd. The Buzzmachine debate about the debate debacle reveals that pure democracy on the Internet works better in theory than in practice. Sometimes even radical democrats like Jeff Jarvis need to make their decisions independent of the crowd. If you are going to debating with Stalin, it makes sense to make bold decisions like Uncle Joe too.

Hmm, let's count the errors in that send-off paragraph. Nah, on second thought, let's not.

Suffice it to say that anybody who scrambles his tenses like that (and can't punctuate, either), doesn't deserve my valuable reading time.

It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), you shall not have this reader's time in future.

By the bye, I see that your book is tagged "moron" on Amazon.com.

Must make you feel swell to have your work so admired.

Have a nice day.

Actually, it's a good example of how politicians can avoid having to make actual decisions by constantly waiting for a public consensus.

Prosecute Republicans NOW!

PROSECUTE REPUBLICANS NOW!

It is a Known Fact, that the Republicans have broken Dozens of Laws, they Crushed up the Electric Cars to do a Bait and Switch to give you Hybrid Cars to keep you using Gas, they raise the Gas prices 3 times as high, then give you a Car that only Burns One Third the gas. The Republicans are responsible for the Deaths of THOUSANDS of people since they have been in Power, and now they are trying to pass Stricter Copyright Laws that will Destroy all Creativity, because anyone who Creates ANYTHING has to Copy what Someone else already did First. Musicians have to Play and Copy other people's music to learn how to play, Bill Gates Copied Windows from Apple OS, Every PC in the World is a Copy of the Originial IBM PC, the Japanese had to Copy how the Americans made Cars before they started making Cars. Once the Republicans pass their Stricter Copyright Laws all Creativity will be Destroyed. Even everything you view on the Web is Automatically Loaded into your Temporary Internet File, so once the Sticter Copyright laws are passed all Streaming Video and Audio, and even Burning ANY CD will become illegal. Real Player, iTunes, Winamp, they will all be Destroyed by the Republicans. For more info read MY2CENTS:
