Microsoft has been getting a lot of download love for its Bing app for the iPhone. On August 30, the company announced delivery of a new Bing app -- this time for Android.

Microsoft is rolling out the expected "Bing for Mobile Android" app and is making it available for free via the Verizon Wireless Android Marketplace, according to a new blog post by the Bing team.

Bing for Mobile Android App available to Verizon customers. You can now download the free Bing App from your Verizon Wireless Android phones’ Marketplace.

Like the Bing for iPhone app, the homepage features the Bing image of the day with clickable hotspots. Users will be able to swipe through up to seven days' worth of Bing images, Microsoft officials said.

Voice search is enabled in the new Bing Android app, as well, according to the blog post, as is integration with Bing Maps.

Bing on the iPhone has proven surprisingly popular (in terms of number of downloads from the Apple store). Microsoft has issued a few fixes for it since its initial release in December 2009. Some Windows Mobile phone users have said they felt left by the wayside, in terms of the functionality and appearance of Bing on iPhone compared to how it works/looks on Windows Phones.

I've asked Microsoft for more details as to which other carriers might be getting Bing for Android next. No word back yet. Stay tuned....

Update: This just in from a corporate spokesperson: "The Bing for Mobile Android App is available on any VZW Android 2.x devices and higher. The only device we don’t support today is the Motorola Devour. Given the deep partnership with VZW on Bing search, we’ve decided to roll out our Bing search experiences on VZW first. We’re working to make Bing available on the other mobile operators and their Android devices."

Microsoft unveiled Bing for Android the same day that the Hotmail team announced Exchange ActiveSync push support for a variety of phones, minus Android ones. (The reality is many Android phones currently do work with the new EAS capability, but Microsoft officials are not yet making support for Android "official.")

  • Cool!!! Great that Google lets this happen!! But, they do not have any

choice either. Trying to block competing search would cause them lots of problems.

    • google doesnt "let" this happen, they have no say in it whatsoever

thats very different. Verizon could totally block all google services if it wanted to and force all it's android customers to use bing for search/maps and still google wouldnt have any say in the matter...

@Johnny Vegas UMMMMM, no they couldn't. You see, the Android OS is owned by Google. They control what you can remove from the OS, not Verizon.

Of course, you can Root, and do whatever you want to with it.

On another topic: The holdup on the Android tablets is Google refusing them access to the Market. What good is an Android (or Apple) device without access to apps? Google has total control over the Android OS, and is using it to their advantage.

@Johnny Vegas It is not being pushed to anyone. It is simply in the market for download if you want it. It is actually quite good, too.

The same advertisers that brought us Seinfeld (lets play footsie and wiggle our shorts Bill), Laptop Hunters (that got all sorts of bad press for lies (incorrect pricing and customer never actually went into an Apple store) and portraying windows as "cheep"), And Windows 7 was Macs idea (where a college kid who can't get laid and get kicked out of his dorm room (by his Mac roommate) has to watch TV in the hall because he doesn't even have a friend whom he could visit).

I bet Kinect willcinsel sohbet not be magical either.

  • If Verizon pushses this crap on my phone..

so help me god. If I want it (which I dont) I'll download it...
    JT82
    • Yes, let us hope that Microsoft did not pay them to push it to all of their

Android customers. I would hope that Verizon would be smart enough to NOT do that. I personally do not want Bing, but, I DO want a free and open market with competition.
      DonnieBoy
      • agreed

@DonnieBoy but bing is not free market competition. it lost the search war (no matter what they choose to call it now). it loses obscene amounts of money and will continue to do so (according to ballmer) until the cash cows come home. yahoo, alta vista, all of them lost the search war. the only difference between them and ms is that they had to run a business with bottom lines (that hole inconvenient profit and loss thingy). ms doesn't. no, i'd like to see someone compete that isn't buying their way in. that's free market.

        @DonnieBoy

I get that telling you to approach a Microsoft product with an open mind is an effort in futility but alas, I will try. The Bing Mobile app is very, very good. That and exchange e-mail are the two things about WinMo 6.5 I like more than Android. As I'm replacing my aging Touch Pro 2 with a Droid 2 in the next week or so, whenever our slow corporate sales rep gets around to it anyway, I'm excited by the news that Bing is available for it.

I will continue to use Google's web search, but Bing's location-based searches, maps and GPS are superior in my opinion. And really to my surprise. You might give it a try, worst thing you do is uninstall it.

However, to your point about pushing it out, I don't think they'll do that. It won't surprise me if it's preloaded on devices soon. And I'll agree with you there, I don't think they should. They already load down Droids with far too much BS anyway. Let me choose what to install.

@babyboomer57 Well that's a good thing. Last time MS dropped an app like this (albeit on BB users) VZ pushed it out as an "update" to ALL the phones. I'll take your word on it, between the hokey commercials and just poor search results, I'll stick with the Google experience.

Google, it's time to make a Google search app and test the Windows Phone approval waters. That would be interesting.
