Get out your decoder rings: More Microsoft codenames

It’s that time again: Time for an updated version of the monthly Microsoft CodeTracker.

This PDF is the same chart I use myself to keep up with the many, morphing codenames of products and technologies coming from Microsoft. The tracker is free and downloadable from the ZDNet site. If you’ve already registered on ZDNet, just grab it. If you haven’t, registration info will be requested before you download it. Whether you’re a Microsoft customer, partner, analyst, competitor (or even employee), you might find it useful.

I’ve done a lot of pruning in this latest issue, adding new links and dates for the dozens of codenames I’ve been tracking. I’ve also added a handful of new ones, including the Hawaii Project, MAUI, SBS 7 and more.

If there’s a codename missing from my chart that you’d like me to check out and ultimately add, please don’t hesitate to contact me via e-mail. All e-mails I receive are treated as confidential — unless you want a mention/credit line, of course.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to get posts from “All About Microsoft” in e-mail form (hourly, daily or weekly), you can subscribe here. And if you are all about Twitter, you can follow me there, as well.

Kick off your day with ZDNet's daily e-mail newsletter. It's the freshest tech news and opinion, served hot. Get it.

You're right

@Fletchguy @Fletchguy You hit that one right on the head fletch. Not to mention most businesses use Microsoft so if you actually work with computers instead of just play with them (cough cough apple fanboys cough) you're probably going to want to know what's next from Microsoft so you can plan on future upgrades etc.

@wb.cnote See...that's the pervasive bone-headed attitude that makes all you M$ fanbois such slobbering knuckle-draggers. Here at my job, and all throughout Hollywood, all the real work is done mostly on high end Apple platforms and then we have to rely on the M$ stuff for low power crap, like documents and SQL databases and powering the door locks. Trust me, we do plenty REAL work!

@Fletchguy : so, according to you, if one is not interested in tracking codenames, then it's someone that is not interested in the development of new ideas? That a very stupid conclusion. Moreover, if one is not interested in codenames it must be an Apple fanboy? That's also very stupid. Get a life instead of keeping defending this useless topic

I'd love to smash your face in until it no longer resembled anything human. I'd also love to cut your face into many ribbons.

@nomorebs: Each to his own. You have your own minority opinion, to which you're entitled. But don't assume the rest of the world agrees with you by any means.
For some people, that's a great piece of info!

Heh heh heh ... "registration info will be requested before you download it" ... these MS people really internalize the evil empire, don't they?

@scott1329 : Simply means you have to be signed into ZDNet or TechRepublic, etc.. It downloads without any kind of registration if you are signed into ZDNet.

Know your facts; don't look dumb.
Thanks very much Mary Jo for this great update! As an ISV, it is important to keep abreast of this, as we may identify other ways to partner or integrate with upcoming projects. Having your broad perspective and consolidation of this info is very benefitial.

This should help on my researches!

It's incredible how ppl here wants to show themselves up - Hey guys, just an idea: throw all of that contempt, bias and reassurances, if you want to be someone on the IT World. Nor Apple, Microsoft or any other brand is going to pay for your trolling.

Yes, we all have our favorites (Apple, MS, Linux, etc etc etc) but closing yourself inside a little box don't get you anywhere. If u guys can't understand this, go for the right section/site/blog for you and stop creating all that senseless hostility on the comments. That's childish.

This is a great set of information! I've decided to follow it periodically. Also, loved finding the current plans for win8 there plus a lot of things I wasn't aware of!
Thanks!
Funny that even though Jo's post was made on Aug/4th, nobody cared about it except after I pointed out how useless it was. Then the next day and afterward all the geniuses came here to try to prove me wrong or to tell me I was an apple fanboy. Yeah, sure, they care a lot about this.

can't always make time to reply to a blog post immediately. It certainly doesn't mean we don't need or appreciate the information in it. And nomorebs is CERTAINLY NOT an Apple user. Apple users have real jobs.
