Microsoft has gone in-house and chosen Satya Nadella as the new president of the company's Server and Tools division.

Nadella will be replacing Server and Tools President Bob Muglia, who announced his plans to leave the company in January.

It looks like at least one other Microsoft exec isn't happy with Ballmer's latest decision. Microsoft announced today that Server and Cloud Senior Vice President Amitabh Srivastava (whom I had figured as a possible choice) is leaving the company. Server and cloud Corporate Vice President Bill Laing will take over Srivastava's role in the interim, company officials said.

Nadella is a 19-year Microsoft veteran who most recently led engineering for the Online Services Division. Before that, he led Business Solutions, which focused on the Dynamics ERP and CRM products. He also previously led various engineering teams in the server group.

Here is CEO Steve Ballmer's e-mail on Nadella's appointment. And here's Nadella's own e-mail on it.

Nadella definitely has engineering chops, but he also has MBA credentials. From his official bio on the Microsoft Web site:

"A native of Hyderabad (India), Nadella has a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Mangalore University, a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from the University of Chicago."

Microsoft is not planning on doing any further "major" reorganization of top management at this time, a company spokesperson told me today.

Microsoft's board of directors should be thrown UNDER the jail.

  • Just like Mubarak has to go, so does Steve Balmer. No compromise.

Shuffling other positions will do nothing to resolve the situation.

Senior VP? Corporate VP? Forget the codename chart, I need an orgchart to keep track of what's going on.

  • By the way, Nadella looks like a good guy, but 19 years is way too long at

Microsoft. He will probably end up at Google or another startup. Indians are great people to work with.

@DonnieBoy Yeah, for someone who has been in Microsoft for 19+ years, I would highly doubt that they are going to be unsuccessful and have to take their work elsewhere. Plus, Nadella is a cloud expert, and isn't that where everything is going right now...?

  • He has a CS degree...

so that could be a step in the right direction.

  • Who?

So he failed at running Search and Dynamics and gets rewarded with Server. Nice guy enough though.

One more reason why Microsoft is going down hill fast.

  • Stop whining about everyone

Get a life people. Don't start complaining about any new changes that happen. Try to adapt for a change. Read this article here and you'll see Nadella isn't such a bad option: http://cloudtechsite.com/news/microsoft-attempts-to-strengthen-its-grip-over-cloud-computing-market.html

  • Congratulations

Mr Satya Nadella, congratulations on becoming the new CEO of Microsoft. If by any chance you read this message, there is one thing I would like to mention. Keep the tablet world separate from the desktop world. Why should users have to sacrifice not having a "start" button? As you mentioned in your first email as a CEO, your users should be able to "do more" not "do less"!
