Microsoft Build Windows 8 confab: What's the latest?

Summary: Microsoft's Build event for Windows developers is just 10 days away. Here are a few tidbits about agenda changes, an unofficial preconference and more for those following the twists and turns.

There's just over a week until Microsoft's Build conference in Anaheim, Calif. -- the place where "all will be revealed" around the Windows 8 and Windows Azure development stories.

There's still no official word as to any names or details about the sessions planned for the four-day event. But as of September 2, thanks to a slightly tweaked agenda, we now know that there will be two keynotes (Days 1 and 2), a number of "big picture sessions" (Day 1) and two Microsoft-sponsored parties (Day 1 and 2).

We also know that one of the planned "local" Build events slated for France has been cancelled. Besides France, Microsoft had scheduled a number of day-long Build events in Belgium, Denmark, Dubai, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, according to Microsoft Community Contributor Francisco Martin Garcia.

On August 30, Microsoft France representative sent the following note (translated from the original French) to those who had signed up to attend the French Build event:

Hello:

You are registered to the event local entitled "//Build/", organized by Microsoft in France. This local event has been cancelled. We apologize for this change of program and will inform you of new events.

I invite you to consult the Windows 8 (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8_fr/) blog if you want to be informed in real time on this product. The information available on the Build of September 13, 2011 in Anaheim, California Conference are published on http://www.buildwindows.com/.

To be regularly informed of the events with the Microsoft news, feel free to consult frequently with our etMSDN sitesTechNet and subscribe to our newsletters.

Thank you for your interest in Microsoft.

I asked a Windows spokesperson in the U.S. about the cancellation and whether the other planned Build events were still on. I didn't receive a direct answer to either question. Instead, I was sent the following statement via e-mail:

“Microsoft is extending its newest developer event BUILD globally in multiple ways including live streamed keynotes, having a major international presence in Anaheim and engaging directly with developers in their home country to learn about the future of Windows…”

Anyone registered to attend any of the other local Build events heard about any other cancellations from Microsoft?

Microsoft announced on August 1 that Build was sold out, but that Microsoft plans to live stream the keynotes from the show, and to make available publicly webcasts of the sessions the day after they happen.

Microsoft also cancelled the planned day of pre-conferences for Build. One Microsoft Regional Director, Billy Hollis, is running his own "unofficial" pre-conference session on creating user experiences on September 12.

In addition to learning about the Windows 8 UI and “new app model” at Build, Microsoft developers with whom I’ve spoken are hoping to hear about the next version of Visual Studio (VS 2012), Microsoft’s plans for Blend (and for HTML5 development tools in general) and how Microsoft plans to support Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) in the Windows 8 timeframe.

Microsoft is expected to provide Build attendees with the Windows 8 bits in test form, and may even give paying attendees some tablet hardware to test them on.

    Yes, I agree. What is going to happen with the silverlight support. We just launched our digital media hub platform, SnapCrowd.com, and what MS is going to due with the continue developer support for SL & WPF is crucial!

      @snapcrowd - Considering MS still supports VB6 runtime, I think you'll find that Silverlight will still be supported for some time to come.

      Whether or not Silverlight is being deprecated or solidified as the primary Win8 UI app platform, we'll have to wait and see.

      Silverlight 5 is about to go gold. Expect Silverlight to take center stage in Phone 7 as well a native Windiows 8 development. Expect convergence between WPF and Silverlight in the coming years.

        @honeymonster - How exactly to you have the inside scoop? Many Thanks!

        @honeymonster. You're making assumptions, and I agree absolutely with you that the assumptions are right. You also have to realize that the blundering to-date on the Silverlight story has made developers nervous. If you look back, you'll see the Silverlight ambition has been watered down (cross platform etc)- while developers 'get it', silverlight is great, it's still unclear if MS upper management 'get it'.

        From the noises so far, I think it's all positive, but this, from a company that's frequently late 'to get it', and often misses the point entirely, until shown the way by the competition.

      The are just about to release the version 5. Doesnt seem like a depreciated product to me.

      Beside that silverlight seems to be the perfect API to bring the tablet and the desktop world together.

      On the windows 8 developper blog they even say there is a full team just for XAML (silverlight or WPF is not that important now, they both share the same xml tags)

  • No Beta Release ?

    Many had hoped a beta of Win 8 would be released. Any guesses about the release date ?

    • They are following the Windows 7 script

      @torre2
      Those of us going to Build will probably receive a (very early) "preview" of Windows 8. Then expect Community Technology Preview (CTP) before a beta, release candidate and then RTM.

  • No great expectations

    Microsoft is devoid of any innovation. This will continue to be so as long as it is run by the bully Ballmer. To produce great products profit should not be the only motive. Microsoft has survived so far by its money power and illegal trade practices.

    We can expect innovation from new companies with new ideas. If Microsoft declines it will be great news for innovation.

      @xyz10_z

      And where is the inovation if its not microsoft ?? Apple who still have is gray and sad user interface, maybe Linux (Unbuntu) with is windows XP user interface like ??

      A few microsoft innovation :
      -Kinect
      -Surface
      -WCF
      -XAML (WPF and Silverlight)
      -Azure (the only product who offert a private cloud alternative)
      and so on.

      They even promote innovation and partnership

      And finally they does lots of nice research and developpment

      • You forgot some: LINQ, Async, Reactive Extensions

        @SylvainT
        While they are strictly developer technologies, they are truly innovative.

        LINQ has already redefined how developers blend functional and OO code. Async is going to do the same for asynchronous programming.
        honeymonster
      • RE: Microsoft Build Windows 8 confab: What's the latest?

        @honeymonster Hail LINQ!
        TheFilipinoFlash
      • Wrong.

        @SylvainT None of those items you listed is a true innovation.

      Let me guess.....

      Apple invented Tablets?
      Apple invented MP3 players?
      Apple invented touch screen phones / smartphones?

      If any company really truely is innovative, its Microsoft.

      how can a company that runs basically every company in the world not be innovative? Perhaps you think huge corporations should be run on Lion Server?

      A stated, see stuff like surface and kinect for true innovations.

      What Apple does is take someone elses work, and makes it a bit easier to use

      • Like Tri-Gate 3D transistor technology in the I-Phone 5?

        @daniejam10 ... No, MS didn't have a chance, Intel chose Apple and the I-Phone 5 to introduce this Absolutely ground breaking technology, Microsoft is welcome to the table scraps after I-Phone 5 sales go through the roof. Apple has a higher ranking on the Fortune 500 than Microsoft does anyway. Who are you trying to fool?<br><br>As far as Intel is concerned, MS is a non-player in technology.<br><br><a href="http://www.eweek.com/c/a/IT-Infrastructure/Intels-3D-TriGate-Transistor-Breakthrough-A-Look-Inside-273397/?kc=EWKNLNAV05062011STR1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><a href="http://www.eweek.com/c/a/IT-Infrastructure/Intels-3D-TriGate-Transistor-Breakthrough-A-Look-Inside-273397/?kc=EWKNLNAV05062011STR1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.eweek.com/c/a/IT-Infrastructure/Intels-3D-TriGate-Transistor-Breakthrough-A-Look-Inside-273397/?kc=EWKNLNAV05062011STR1</a></a><br><br>Really, MS innovative? They innovate botnets like the TDL-4 rather well, 4.5 million infected Windows users in the first three months of 2011 and not a whimper from the ZDNet watchdog puppy.
