Microsoft delivers IE 9.0.3 via Windows Update

By | October 12, 2011, 11:03am PDT

Summary: Microsoft is making its Internet Explorer 9.0.3 release, a cumulative security update, available via Windows Update starting on October 12.

Microsoft is making available via Windows Update a refreshed version of its Internet Explorer (IE) 9 browser that incorporates a number of recently-released security fixes.

Starting on October 12, he October 2011 Cumulative Security Update (IE 9.0.3) is available on Windows Update. It will be delivered automatically to users who have Automatic Updates turned on. Microsoft is recommending administrators and others who apply manually updates to apply the refresh immediately using the Microsoft Update Service or other management software.

IE 9.0.3 resolves a number of privately reported vulnerabilities in IE 6, 7, 8 and 9, according to an October 12 blog post on the IE Blog.

According to the blog post, “the most severe vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less affected than users who operate with administrative user rights.”

Microsoft labeled the IE security update as “critical for those using IE 9 on Windows clients and “moderate” for those using IE on Windows servers.

Microsoft pushed out similar cumulative updates for IE 9 with IE 9.0.1 in June 2011, and IE 9.0.2 in August 2011.

Microsoft published information on the latest round of IE vulnerabilities the same week that the company launched a marketing campaign for IE 9 that revolved around Microsoft’s own claims that IE 9 is more secure than Chrome or Firefox.

Saw an entry in the update history for today, concerning a cumulative security update for IE9 on Win 7. Could this be...??

@RetiredInAZ . I don't use ie 9 because it's part of your system. it's the same thing if you where going to explore your P.c . I use fire fox for every thing.
@RetiredInAZ If it is doing that, then you have other problems on your computer. Maybe the other browsers you are using let in some malware . . . happy
@RetiredInAZ I agree with you. It's a major pain in the a*s to use and very poorly designed, not the least of which is doing away with the print icon button. Who in their right mind wants to go through 3-4 steps to print something from the internet when it used to take just 1 click?!!!!
@macengr Cntrl-P still works just fine to print.
@macengr - PEBKAC.

1) Right click IE9 title bar.
2) Click "Command Bar".
3) See command bar appear with print, home, etc.
4) Promise self to actually learn how to use IE.
@macengr right click and there it is. What's the fuss?
@macengr
No problems with IE9 on Win7/64
I got my update part of patch Tuesday
And if you want to print right-click on the page.
(I still prefer - and use - Chrome for most surfing)
@macengr, just right click print.
@macengr

Have you tried CTRL+P...prints everytime no matter what browser you are using
@RetiredInAZ

If your browser crashes every time you close a tab:
1) You may well have some form of malware on your PC. If you have no other up to date anti-malware solution installed, go get Microsoft Security Essentials - it's free and VERY effective.

IE9 is generally rock-solid. If you're seeing crashes, 99% of the time it's because of some 3rd-party toolbar/add-on/snap-in like Adobe's Flash.

Try uninstalling Flash and go get the latest version from Adobe's site. Flash is notoriously unstable, but latest bits include A LOT of stability and perf improvements.

Also consider uninstalling all your Ask / Yahoo / Google / etc. toolbars. Some of these are little more than malware with a pretty skin.
@RetiredInAZ
I'm sorry you are having so much with windows updates. As you can see mine is working fine and without fail, as I'm still using my computer without problems. Infact, if there was not a question about a certain update, I would not have known that the update happened--so seemless. Just set it and forget!!

IE when there are other alt's
Thorsland Updated - 12th Oct
Why staying with a browser that doesn't follow the evolution forward. As long i can recall IE always had lot's of issues, slow loading times of pages an tabs to not mention crashes. Chrome never fails beyond it also has support for additional extensions which make it more useful. Latest versions of IE could be easier to use if was better designed. Buttons could confirm more clearly when they used. The idea by situate important buttons like reload, stop, enter inside the tiny address field is just so lame. Guess they used Fitt's law or it wasn't even invented that time.
I just updated my !E9.0.2 to IE9.0.3. Thanks for the alert!
