Microsoft delivers Office 2010 Service Pack 1

Summary: Microsoft made available for download the final version of Service Pack (SP) 1 for Office 2010 on June 28.

Microsoft made available for download the final version of Service Pack (SP) 1 for Office 2010 on June 28.

Microsoft released a first beta of the service pack in November 2010. In May of this year, Microsoft officials said to expect the final SP1 bits to be out by the end of June 2011.

SP1 consists of cumulative and public updates to date for the various point products that are part of Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010. Products that will get fixes and updates include Office 2010 suites, Project 2010, Visio 2010, Office 2010 servers, Office Web Apps, Search Server 2010, SharePoint 2010 Products and FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint. Microsoft is planning to update all 40 SKU languages for Office when SP1 ships.

Office Web Apps, Microsoft's Webified versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote are being updated as part of SP1. Chrome browser support is now official for Office Web Apps, as of today.

Among some of the other fixes in Office 2010 Sp1:

  • Outlook fixes an issue where “Snooze Time” would not reset between appointments.
  • The default behavior for PowerPoint “Use Presenter View” option changed to display the slide show on the secondary monitor.
  • Integrated community content in the Access Application Part Gallery.
  • Better alignment between Project Server and SharePoint Server browser support.
  • Improved backup / restore functionality for SharePoint Server
  • The Word Web Application extends printing support to “Edit Mode.”
  • Project Professional now synchronizes scheduled tasks with SharePoint task lists.
  • Internet Explorer 9 “Native” support for Office Web Applications and SharePoint
  • Office Web Applications Support for Chrome
  • Inserting Charts into Excel Workbooks using Excel Web Application
  • Support for searching PPSX files in Search Server
  • Visio Fixes scaling issues and arrowhead rendering errors with SVG export
  • Proofing Tools improve spelling suggestions in Canadian English, French, Swedish and European Portuguese.
  • Outlook Web Application Attachment Preview (with Exchange Online only)
  • Office client suites using “Add Remove Programs” Control Panel,  building on our work from Office 2007 SP2

  • Time to update my System Image

I have every Office 2010 application installed, so it will be a lot to update. Haven't updated my system image since SP1 for Windows 7, so this will be a good opportunity to do so.

This may be the smallest Service Pack in a long long long time. It installed within a few minutes. Is that a statement on the maturity of Office?

Same here. Installed in under 6 minutes.

When will there be a fix so that Google Desktop Search indexes Outlook 10?
    • Is that an Outlook issue

      or a Google Desktop issue?

I am using Windows 7 Pro and Outlook 2010/Office 2010. For the past three plus years I was on a computer with Windows XP and Outlook 2007/Office 2007, using Google Desktop I could find any files and/or emails with Google Desktop search in a fraction of a second - anything I was searching for came up in less than a second....

Now Google Desktop doesn't index Outlook 2010. Who's at fault Microsoft or Google - I'm sure it is both, with both companies acting like little kids on the playground in a turf war. The only problem I have is that I didn't pay Google anything and we pay Microsoft thousands of dollars corporately (and personally) to run their software.

My big complaint is that I can't understand how Microsoft can have Bing which indexes the entire WWW and can't employ that search technology on a desktop and Google can. I have a lot of emails / files that Google Desktop could search instantly - Microsoft's Outlook search is a joke - you can't even call it slow - it's impractical. You have to define where you want to search and then it doesn't really work for a .pst file of any size (or if you have multiple .pst files). The search takes way to long compared to Google Destop Search.

Bottom line, Micorsoft, is there any chance you could work with Google to license their desktop search so that the WORLD could be more productive? I am sure there would be people/clients/corporations that would pay you more than the licensing fees you would have to pay Google to have a really good search. OR, can you get your BING search technology onto a computer?

Help! - I am very annoyed that in this day and age I just went backwards in productivity/technology by upgrading from Office 2007 to Office 2010.
