Microsoft Kin reviews not so keen

By | May 5, 2010, 10:38am PDT

A few Microsoft news items from around the Web:

The early reviews of Kin (formerly known as Pink) are in. And overall, they’re not good. Most of the criticism is around price, with reviewers noting that Kins are fancy feature phones, not smartphones, but they are priced like smartphones. (There is no Kin app download capability and none coming.) Verizon is requiring a data plan that costs the same as ones for smartphones. Maybe Microsoft/Verizon are assuming some rich parents will be willing to shell out for their teens/twentysomethings to socialize?

The Wall Street Journal liked the Studio component of the new phones, but other reviewers are still scratching their heads as to why Microsoft felt a need to work with Sharp to create Windows Phones for a particular segment of the market, as opposed to pitching Windows Phone 7 devices to the “Upload Generation.”

Spindex: Microsoft’s latest social-networking spin. Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, the folks that brought us the recent preview of Office Docs (Office Web Apps integrated with Facebook), have released another new preview. This one is called Spindex. It sounds a lot like FriendFeed from early reports. FUSE Labs’ charter is to create social-network-centric apps and technologies.

Active Directory Federation Services 2.0 has been released to the Web. As expected, Microsoft has RTW’d ADFS 2.0 (codenamed “Geneva”), its new iteration of its directory federation services. The ADFS 2.0 bits are available from the Microsoft download center. ADFS Geneva is a key part of Microsoft’s security/identity platform, as well as part of its Azure cloud operating environment. Microsoft also released to the Web today Forefront 2010 Protection for SharePoint 2010.

Microsoft and Nokia have rolled out their promised Communicator for Nokia release. The Communicator secure instant messaging client is available initially for Nokia E72 and Nokia E52, and is downloadable (English only) as of May 5 from Nokia’s Ovi Store. Over time, the pair will make Communicator Mobile for Nokia available pre-installed on select Nokia Eseries smartphones. Microsoft and Nokia announced their mobile partnership in August 2009.

  • RE: Microsoft Kin reviews not so keen
Of course they aren't so keen, there are three simple reasons why.
    1. It's Microsoft. No matter what they did people were going to complain anyway. If it was any other manufacturer it'd be the awesomesest phone ever, but because its got Microsoft on it somehow that automatically makes it bad. People just want to see Microsoft fail for some reason, which is a rather sick and twisted perception.
    2. Verizon priced this out of the target market. The $29.99 is pretty much a deal breaker. The 18-30 market isn't going to have the money to pony up for the data plan.
    3. Verizon (and other reviewers) are trying to market this as a smart phone even though its a step down and is a feature phone. That is why there is no app store and the like. Its got a web browser and some social sites built in. Its not trying to be a smart phone, its a social phone.

1.) Bull! The only people who complain about Microsoft have reason to complain about Microsoft. Lately, that's because Microsoft has done nothing but offer too little, too late. The Kin appears to be bearing out this thought.

2.) $29.99 is really a pretty good price for a feature phone; it's certainly no deal breaker when you compare it to all the other feature phones out there. However, the Kin wasn't announced as a feature phone, but rather as competition to the smart phone and Apple's iPhone in particular.

3.) Microsoft itself, as I said, originally announce the Kin models as a way to draw attention away from Android and the iPhone. That alone puts the Kin in competition with consumer-level smart phones. As such, it is underpowered and insufficient for the task it was given. Honestly, the Kin would have extreme difficulty pulling kids off of Twitter and Facebook.

  • Makes me curious as to Windows Phone 7
Sounds like a good review, though I agree why they partnered with Sharp. Maybe Sharp approached MS with a deal of some type as a way to get a larger portion of the US market, seeing that Samsung, LG, HTC, and Motorola are the bigger players here?

Though I agree that Verizon's pricing plan may be dragging it down: A high price is one thing, but all together different when you add a high price each month for a data plan it doesn't really need.

What's sad is that the Kin will fail, and Microsoft employees will scratch their heads wondering, "why? We did everything we could!!"

As a parent, I am NOT spending 30 bucks a month for my kid's dataplan on a smartphone / kin / whatever.

  • It sounds as though that's Verizon's fault there
attaching a smartphone plan to a feature phone.

  • I agree to an extent...
@John Zern I'm sure Verizon set the pricing, but that being the case, Microsoft should have chosen to partner with somebody else.

Microsoft doesn't need Apple and RIM spinning a Kin failure into a WP7 failure before WP7 launches. If Verizon wasn't going to play ball, Microsoft should have walked away.

Friggin Verizon... they had a real chance here.

  • Kin is also a failure for the deaf community.
A social phone not equal to instant messenger? That means no access to Internet relay services for Kin for the deaf.

  • Maybe not totally Verizon's fault
The service just consume too much bandwidth with auto updates, auto uploads, but people don't appriciate it. But more likely fault on MSFT side.

  • Hi, MJ, I don't appreciate the web page redesign...
The designer doesn't seem to know what he is doing. Look better, cleaner, but that's just cosmetic. Major thing is it make navigation harder. e.g. where do I find your recent posts? Of course I can find them if I try harder, but you don't want me try too hard, right? Also the summary section serves little purpose.

I know it's not you, you don't even know who did this. But whoever he is, try to pass my message on, and correct it immidiately.

    redesign
Hi. We're getting mixed feedback on the redesign. We bloggers didn't know what to expect until it launched, and were not consulted about the design. (Most of us are freelancers and not employees, for the record.) If you are having trouble finding my new posts, try subscribing to my RSS feed (link is at the top of my site). Or bookmark my home page (www.allaboutmicrosoft.com) and the newest posts are at the top, always. MJ

Honestly, bloggers and readers should be consulted about the design - all of us have to use this platform, and getting feedback from users is an important part of UI design.

Personally, I've been moving away from using ZDNet's own home page and just using my RSS reader. It's just easier that way.

Agree on the redesign; it's significantly harder to use and harder to follow a given thread. I prefer the old Threaded format.
