Microsoft: More Windows Phone 7 stock due in the coming weeks

By | November 10, 2010, 2:32pm PST

Microsoft spent hundreds of millions to shift gears, staff up a new Windows Phone team, create new and more locked-down smartphone reference designs and launch/advertise the new Windows Phone 7s.

It seems the one thing that money hasn’t been able to buy the Redmondians is sufficient supply.

In Europe, when phones launched at the end of October, there were reports of device shortages. In the U.S. and Canada, it sounds like the situation has been largely the same. In the U.S., device shortage is more surprising, given that many customers here are locked in with Verizon and Sprint — carriers that didn’t offer any Windows Phone 7 devices this week because the WP7 platform doesn’t yet support CDMA.

So what happened? Did the carriers and handset providers not believe enough in Windows Phone 7 to make/stock enough phones? Were there component shortages? Last minute glitches in phone makers’ software? (The report of alleged problems with the Dell Venue Pros leading to a delay in availability are being investigated by Dell, a spokesperson told me today.)

The Street.com reported earlier this week (based on a single unnamed market researcher) that 40,000 Windows Phone 7s were sold on Monday in the U.S. (Presumably, that means there were at least that many phones in stock.)

Those kinds of numbers, as well as widespread device shortages, were the order of the day when Palm Pre launched in the summer of 2009, with 45,000 to 50,000 phones reportedly sold in the first weekend of availability. Motorola was believed to have sold 100,000 Droids in the initial two days of sales.

I asked the Softies for an update on the reported WP7 shortages. A spokesperson sent the following statement:

“As is sometimes the case with the launch of a new product, initial supplies are tight. We understand some customers are disappointed to learn their local stores are already out of stock. We hear their concerns and are working diligently with our partners to bring more phones to stores in the coming weeks.”

While reports of AT&T and T-Mobile stores with only a handful (or no) Windows Phone 7 models for sale are disconcerting, I found anecdotes regarding the actual “launch” of the new phones to be equally, if not more, so.

I remember a number of tablet PC enthusiasts complaining about Microsoft’s failure to put real marketing muscle behind the tablet as one of the main reasons that platform never took off. They had eerily similar complaints: Insufficient stock, lack of working demo units, not enough pre-training of sales people.

Yes, it is early days for WP7. And Microsoft is counting on demand to grow alongside supply. But how are Microsoft and its partners going to get even close to the alleged target of 30 million WP7 phones sold in its first year unless they get more working phones in retail stores so as to attract consumers who haven’t been Microsoft mobile believers?

I think it hurt sales coming out on Monday. I have been waiting for Windows Phone 7 for six months and it took me til Tuesday to get a free chance from work to go get one. Coming from Windows 6.5 the device is amazing.

The first WP7 handsets are buggy
gjafg 10th Nov 2010
@jhottes - You may want to wait. The first HTC handsets are plagued with a 'pink camera' problem. Dell handsets have been unable to log onto secure Wi-Fi networks.

@gyepera

Gee you really are getting desperate. My HTC Mozart is fine. What do you gain by spreading this FUD?

I had to wait 2 weeks in Australia, as they sold out on the first day. Very happy with the phone.

Funny how so many people who've never used it have such definitie opinions.

Where's Donnie?

@gyepera ... the reports of pink camera issues on the HTC devices is a common HTC glitch for some reason. It's always been resolved by software updates within weeks of discovery, so really... who cares?

I haven't seen the reports about the Dell Venue, but I do recall Apple having the same issue with the iPad at its launch. Again, who cares as long as it gets corrected?

Right and every single iPhone and Android phones are perfect.

Are trolls like you desperate?

gyepera. Apple's iPhones have all had issues, so Microsoft feels they must copy them in that respect.

plain
@gyepera Correction, the HD7 is plagued with that issue, the other HTC handsets are not.

Windows Phone 7 has flopped
gjafg 10th Nov 2010
Microsoft spin about handset shortages appears designed to cover over the news that it only sold 40,000 units.

That 40,000 units is for at least 3 models, which gives them about 13,000 units per model. These low sales are getting into KIN territory.
@gyepera ... Umm, that's not considering the nearly 80,000 they have given away to developers and employees and partners. It's also the number for launch day only, so basically for a launch, they released 120,000 phones. Tell me again how many Droid phones Motorola sold (hint: it's in the article you probably didn't read) on their launch? Ohhhh, so maybe not quite the flop you thought, eh? Funny how math and facts tend to make you look foolish.

Well...
zkiwi 10th Nov 2010
You're being overly optimistic, to the point of putting lipstick on a pig.

The success or not of WP7 will come down to how quickly they can catch up to Android, iPhone and Blackberry in terms of what and how well it does what it does AND perhaps more importantly the contracts they have with OEM's and Carriers.
@GoodThings2Life
So you count free phones given away as a consumer demand? Truly pathetic my friend. And of course you are counting all sales for WP7 models + given away vs purchases for a single Android model. How truly inspiring, you should go into politics!
@gyepera

The device has been sold in many countries before it was sold in the US on Monday. This is only US sales data.

The fact that demand appears to exceed supply bodes well for WP7.

@gyepera Trust me there is a shortage of Dell Venue Pro's but I'm not too sure there is a shortage of HTC HD7, I think that is because many prefer the Dell over the HTC and would rather hold out since more and stock is coming in up to the 18th... I think maybe dell is holding onto the phones because they want to sell them on their website but were slow to the punch.
So that means they'll sell 40,000 more?

LOL!!!!!!!!!

Epic failure never looked so good!!!
@cyberslammer2... I hate to repeat myself, but clearly those of us who recognize fact need to in order to get through to some of you people, so here goes...

Well sorry to disapoint you Microsoft haters, but official stats came out and over 300,000 WP7 devices have been sold outside the us (before Nov 8) and the 40,000 sold on the first day in the US is apparently a completely unofficial stat... it is true it's no iPhone stat or Droid stat, but not bad for begining.
@phuguet

Yes compare that to 1.5 MILLION iPhone 4s on the first day.

Kin 2.0 is here.
  • Flagged
@cyberslammer2
You are seriously ridiculous. Good job pointing out iPhone sales, as if no one knows. Apple has way more consumer pull than Microsoft has for mobile devices sales. The most enthusiastic Microsoft fanboy can tell you that. No one, even Microsoft expected to come close to iPhone sales on day one. You're also comparing something that is on it's first itiration to something that has had four implentations. Something that is proven in the market to something that is just trying to make an entry.

This couldn't be anything farther from the Kin situation. This is Microsoft flagship mobile device. The Kin, even if still was supported would be a lower priority project. Stop trolling. You don't have to like the phones, but you also don't have to make yourself look like an idiot.
@wixostrix "Apple has way more consumer pull than Microsoft has for mobile devices sales"....oh wait...please...enlighten me...

Apple has way more pull, but doesn't spend the MILLIONS in advertising Microsoft has for the Windows 7 Phone....so by all accounts that advertising should pay off for Microsoft, right????

Get real....even the iPhone 1.0 had better sales the first day than this flop, and Microsoft should have known better than to limit their launch day supply like they did...

The first iPhone sold 6.1 MILLION units....according to AT&T the iPhone sold 1 MILLION units their first three days....

Now tell me, if Apple was so limited in their selling because the original iPhone was limited to the Apple stores and AT&T, why is Microsoft only selling 40,000 when they are in every electronics retailer and department store?

Please, enlighten me.

In what world
Michael Alan Goff 11th Nov 2010
Is 340,000, with apparent supply problems, a failure? It isn't as much as the iPhone, sure. Then again, the sheer volume of Windows sales to OSX sales? I would say that, according to your logic, OSX is a flop and should be pulled ASAP.

How about Linux? It has far fewer users than either. According to your logic? This is a flop too.

Or maybe you're saying that anything less than being the best is big for Microsoft because they generally are in the #1 position? I can't really tell, Mr Troll.
@cyberslammer2 I didn't know Microsoft made phones - thought that was HTC, Dell, LG, Samsung, etc. So explain how Microsoft somehow artificially limited the supply of WP7's at launch??
@cyberslammer2 : So you are anti-Microsoft and either pro-Linux or pro-Apple. Right? Nice to be biased. Eh?

I guess Windows 7 is a faiulure for you even though 240 million copies were sold in the first year. then.

What I'd like to know is...
zkiwi 10th Nov 2010
What the OEM and carrier's contracts with Microsoft are like. As in contract duration, and quantities covered. Are there any ideas on those? Especially the contract time.

That will tell how it's likely to do far more than "sold out" or "it has these problems" stories. If the OEM's and carriers are only in it for a year or two, it's already dead. If it's longer then it's a maybe, possibly success asuming Microsoft can catch up with Android and iOS.
so they're definately not going to go away soon. And Sony Ericson has also seen the demand and jump on board and annouced they are going to build Window Phones now.
In any meaningful sense.

40k number from anon source
IE9 10th Nov 2010
The 40k number cited has not be confirmed by any reliable source. It could wel be a number only estimating retail sales and not include on line sales.
Amazon sold out Samsung focus on monday
for hours. O2 has been giving out 20 pound coupons to those who they dont have phones for yet to get them not to try to find them elsewhere.

Stuck on Sprint
GoodThings2Life 10th Nov 2010
I'm stuck on Sprint or I would have had one on launch day. But I will NEVER use AT&T services, and T-Mobile doesn't have very good coverage in my region so I'm stuck waiting until the CDMA launch.

I recognize there are limitations on the platform today, but I also recognize those will be improved and resolved over time, and I want the platform to succeed-- not because it's Microsoft, but because it's a good idea that deserves to succeed.
@GoodThings2Life I would have been in line with you if they would have shipped on Day 1 with Verizon support. AT&T was a major fail for me - after 7+ years of frustration (company standard / paid for carrier) I switched and have been very happy with coverage. Hearing rumors CDMA support may be coming sooner than originally reported....
So, the Street.com mentions some phantom, single unnamed market researcher and claims that only 40K phones were sold the first day and every tech blogger in the world is talking about it like it's a fact. Why not wait until some real numbers from AT&T and T-Mobile come in?

LG Optimus 7 Bluetooth is broken
hwangeruk@... 10th Nov 2010
I am on my second handset, and still the LG Optimus 7 cannot connect to Bluetooth devices.
Frustrating.
This is the best news that Microsoft could get. Knowing that their phones are in high demand and selling out everywhere is reassuring that WP7 is what the people wanted.

Because you seem to confuse the asserted 40,000 as a high demand compared to Android's around 100,000 and the iPhone 4's 1.5 million.

Mind you, you know your assertion that the WP7 is doing well is tantamount to reality being a "Kin-like" result for WP7.

The real difference
Michael Alan Goff 10th Nov 2010
@zkiwi

is supply.

I imagine that when stock is back up, another few hundred thousand will be sold... easily. Not only that, but I'm fairly certain that this was a US only number.

All of that being said, I don't see Windows Phone 7 getting the marketshare that iOS and Android have. Does this make it a failure? Not any more than OSX having a 4-6% marketshare does.

I see this doing just fine.
so that would have been around 800K the first day if they had the inventory. Keep whinning like a little girl though. It looks good on you....

Only one whining like a little girl around here is you.

Please, you're starting to make NonZealot or Loverock look like they have reason and logic and such. Nah, that'll never happen.
@zkiwi

You seem to be confusing the 40k with a fact as opposed to the completely unsubtantiated rumor that is it.

The number, whatever is it, is known to be limited by supply, so even if we HAD the actual number it won't tell us anything about demand until supply catches up.
I got my Dell Venue Pro on launch day. It's a beautiful device and it connects just fine to my home secure WiFi network.
@habraham - My understanding is that the reported WiFi problems are related to trying to connect to a network that is not broadcasting it's SSID. There is apparently no way to enter the network name if it is not detected by the device.

This is a minor software glitch and will be fixed soon.

I mean really, nobody wants this turd. Sales show that and it will be interesting to watch the numbers over the next 5-6 months.

I can't imagine it will go anywhere. Maybe replace Win Mobile for the bottom of the barrel but that's about it.

Game changer it ain't when it's missing features others have had for a while now. And when those features it has work very very poorly.
what they did. All day long. They estimate about 20x the demand than the inventory so they could have sold 800K if they had them. Thats not bad at all. And unlike you who havent used one, those that have say all the features it has all very much better than the android/iphone versions. And all the apps are so better they make android a laughing stock. But you keep watching the next 4-6 months, that way you won't have to see what happens when peoples contracts expire and the real shift wont hit you. But in 5 years or so when windows has done to android in smartphones the samething it did to linux on netbook after it had a 100% share head start, then we wont blame you for all this whinning like a little girl you've been doing on every WP post. Be sure to come back and cry some more fud for us next time. Your increasing desperation is getting more and more amusing.
@Johnny Vegas Keep on trolling troll, no one wants big retarded tiles and xbox live in the corporate world. This phone will fail as bad as your post.

The only one who will be crying is you when your phone is declared a flop early next year.

I have to laugh (as do most here) at your posts because they stink of defeat already: Demand far outweighed supply, and the best you can do is cry about it?

When the phone doesn't fail as ypu predicted (as you did with Kinect, XBox360, Windows7, ect) well, I guess you'll come here again with a whole new screen name and a new set of rants as you'll be once again embarrased to use anything cyberslammer! happy
I wanted to buy the Samsung Focus at launch but it was (and is still not) available on Amazon. It was a little disappointing, but I will just wait it out. It is still up on the site, so hopefully stock will come in soon.
From looking at Amazon I would say the supply problem is real. They are currently sold out of all Windows Phone 7 devices. Even the HTC Surround is sold out.
@sharkboyjohn HTC Surround is actually quite a gorgeous device, I played with it yesterday. The build quality is very good.
Basically WP7 sales were restricted by the supply.
