Microsoft, Nokia to give 25,000 Windows Phones to committed developers

Summary: New Windows Phones aren't the only fruit from the Microsoft-Nokia partnership. Their combined resources will benefit developers, too, the pair said at Nokia World.

Microsoft and Nokia are combining their developer muscle to target developers for Windows Phone.

At the second day of the Nokia World conference in London, representatives from the two companies said they will be providing 25,000 free Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phones to developers who are committed to writing apps for the platform. The give-away begins October 27, officials said -- starting with a truck full of phones right outside the Excel Convention Center, the venue for this week's Nokia World 2011 show.

The message from the pair during a developer track at the show was that "1+1=3" -- the combination of Microsoft and Nokia can achieve more than either could individually. Nokia's retail and merchandising savvy; its localization know-how in Europe, Asia and Africa; and its strong relationships with operators (especially in the area of mobile billing) will benefit Microsoft and the entire Windows Phone ecosystem, the two contended. Microsoft's established developer tools; its cloud infrastructure; and its operating system expertise will aid Nokia and its developers as the Finnish company attempts to set itself on a new course, Nokia and Microsoft officials said.

Microsoft and Nokia also said they plan to host 1,000 joint events -- code camps, hackathons, and other kinds of hands-on confabs -- over the next year as part of their "Smarter Way to App" campaign. They are aiming to reach out to 100,000 developers between now and June.

  • Good news!

The news from Microsoft and Nokia is certainly promising and hopeful, so I'm excited about it all... however, I'm also nervous about the speed and timing of it all. It means at least 4-6 months without any new progress in the US, which is NOT a good thing.

Their ship is well built... they need to leave port!

Yes, sounds like an awesome deal. Microsoft and Nokia have some deep pockets so I am sure giving this away for some top notch apps is nothing for them. I read something similar on http://amce-monterrey2010.org; explaining the details a little bit more.

I agree. This seems like a good move from microsoft, but is it really enough? I mean this collaboration is no match for apple's smartphones unless their handsets start to compete in terms of functionality, and at the moment I don't see any Nokia phones on the same level as the iphones in this regard.

I'm a registered WP7 developer, does that mean I get one?

  • Obligatory - why not, they can't seem to SELL them!

I know, I know, these are the Nokia Saviour phones, and there aren't any sales figures. Just a little joke, flag away.

What institution do you have to be committed to in order to get one of these phones?

perhaps they could throw in HP Touchpads, to sweeten the pot!

Al in all, in reality a smart move by MS to try and get apps ramped up for that platform. They have a ways to go, though.

Excellent. I think I just turned developer. Seriously, I wonder what would have happened had they done this with the N900, or the N9. The cult around the Maemo/Meego phones among Linux disciples was (is) incredibly strong. I think they had around 500 loaners or so at the time of the N900.

As for the speed of development - it will speed up, but the main effect could be the signal it sends. Should this signal hope, as in "wow, now we'll see a lot of developer action" or is it signalling desperation as in "they have to GIVE away 25,000 phones to see some developer action?"

  • Why now and not one year ago?

How many apps are in the market? (more or less about 30000) how many developers are there? how many of these developers have a physical device with windows phone? It would be great to know. For example I have not one and I have 3 published applications on the market (of course, all excellent;-). Fortunately, the VS2010 emulator is good enough.

Let me a little autopromo, i need it ;-)

I think that many of the 25000 devices will not reach its destination. My opinion is that they are a bit late with these ideas.
