When Office 2011 for the Mac ships this holiday season, it will be available as a 32-bit product only, Microsoft officials said in a blog post on June 8.

Microsoft is attributing the decision to the fact that it hasn't transitioned the Ribbonized Office 2011 user interface completely to Cocoa yet. (Microsoft officials are saying they didn't manage to do this because they've been consumed with trying to make the Mac and Windows versions of the products more compatible with the forthcoming release.)

From the post:

"Because Apple's frameworks require us to complete the move to Cocoa before we can build a 64-bit version, Office 2011 will be 32-bit only....The largest difference between using a 32-bit and 64-bit version is the memory capacity available for your content. Most users with typical or even larger-than-average document content will not notice a difference in performance. Where 64-bit can make a difference is for people working with huge amounts of data, such as those creating very large Excel files with data in millions of cells, or PowerPoint presentations with thousands of high resolution images."

Interestingly, Microsoft has been advising Windows users to go with the 32-bit version of Office 2010, rather than the 64-bit version, unless they have these very large data requirements.

Office 2011 will feature Outlook (instead of Entourage), a Mac-customized version of Microsoft’s Ribbon interface; support for the Personal Folders (.PST) e-mail archiving protocol; and the ability to co-author documents with others using SkyDrive and SharePoint, the Softies have said.

In other Apple news this week, Microsoft announced that Bing will be one of the search engine providers listed in Safari on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Looks like the rumored deal via which Bing would have become the default engine on those platforms never came through (or at least hasn't yet).

  • Careful, Microsoft!

If the cult leader gets annoyed with you he will just ban your apps altogether.

    • Nobody believes Microosft's Word any more

Mac OS X is an open platform, so it can't get banned.

32-bit wouldn't normally matter for a word processor, but knowing Microsoft, its Office may get so bloated that in 2011 it will be reaching the limits of 4 gigs of RAM.

I see MS Office as an expensive proprietary word processor, wheras, in many cases the free downloadable OpenOffice.org is much better, on both Mac and Windows.

@Market Analyst - based off an open platform (FreeBSD). Apple keeps OS X closed. Very closed. Why else does Flash run so much faster on comparable Windows machines but slow on Apple? Which company opens up their APIs? Not Apple. Ask companies like unsanity.com why it took forever to update their apps from 10.5 to 10.6. What was said: Apple closed hooks in the APIs, making integration harder for some apps and impossible for others.

And I'd love to see Cocoa "open" and ported to Linux, so to have Adobe apps running on Linux.

OpenOffice is free, but even Mac Office 2008 is far easier to use.

@honeymonster Web 2 is essentially a sales and marketing phenomena, supported by startups who need other people's money. Cynical I know, but none of the current crop of Web 2ers has anything new - besides trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear or in other words, using a browser as a software development platform yeni oyunlar yaris oyunlari

  • Ribbon in MS Office 2011 for Mac

I'd be happy if MS got rid of the ribbon and gave us Mac users the pull-down menus that existed before Office 2007 for Windows. I like getting Outlook for the Mac. It has grown on me since my new Windows box had to use Outlook since Outlook Express was removed. Windows Live email client is weak.

lol.. lots of Windows usaers would like that too.

In Windows, http://www.ubit.ch makes a custom add-in that re-creates the pre-2007 pull-down menus. Tiny executable makes you wonder why MS couldn't simply have a "classic mode". There doesn't seem to be a Mac version, but someone surely has something similar.

Where does Idaho rank? We have been living in Montana for the past 5 years and I am not suprisexy shopto find it #3 on the "worst" list. Considering asexshopmove to Idaho to escapthe high cost of living a low income in MT. There may not be a sales tax here but they get you if you own property!

@tburzio - "free" is not a business model. We cannot have a 'parallel paradigm' of certain things being free. Including labor. Nobody can put food on their families if they work for undervalued wages or do work for free.

There's no excuse for it running as slow as it does in 32-bit; large, medium, or small.

"To use Microsoft Office Live, your computer must meet one of the following requirements:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8 running on Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista. You can download Internet Explorer from the Internet Explorer page.

Mozilla Firefox running on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Mac OS X 10.2.x and later. You can download Firefox from the Firefox download page."

  • RE: Microsoft: Office 2011 for Mac will be 32-bit only

I installed this over the weekend upgrading from Office 08. Seems quite good but here's a thing. When I save an Excel workbook as a .xls file (for a co-worker to open in Windows Office 2004), the workbook won't open properly and I get compatibility warnings. That's a bit of a pain. The 2008 version kept crashing as per my memories of Microsoft applications. I thought the? upgrade would solve this!

@Reneecgv136 Although players have started to add social features to their suites, they are mostly focused on bringing core "communication and collaboration" features - document management, workspaces, email, project management etc. Maybe you see it as a subset of unified communications.
