Microsoft renames its 'D' language 'M'

By | October 10, 2008, 6:28am PDT

Microsoft is continuing to slowly trickle out details about its Oslo modeling strategy. The latest info with the Connected Systems Division (CSD) has gone public are the names of the three Oslo components it will release in Community Technology Preview (CTP) form at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC).

Oslo — which Microsoft initially outlined as encompassing everything from Visual Studio 2010, to System Center Version 5 — now is comprised of just three elements, according to the Softies:

Robert Wahbe, Corporate Vice President of CSD, said Microsoft intends to deliver the final version of all three of these components as part of a future release of Visual Studio. (He didn’t specify whether it would be Visual Studio 2010 or not).

While Microsoft expects most of it users to edit their models in Visual Studio, the company also will  offer a standalone editor (Intellipad) as an option.

Models are no longer just about describing applications; they are part of the applications, Wahbe said during a press tour this week.

“Every large existing application already has a model. Today, it’s hard to author the models and it’s hard to integrate the models. That is where Oslo comes in,” Wahbe said.

Brilliant move! There's already a language named M, formerly known as MUMPS. The Veterans Administration (now Dept. of Veterans Affairs) wrote its DHCP (Decentralized Hospital Computer Program) in M and SAIC used that as the basis for the CHCS program for the active military in the late 1980's. IBM used to sell MUMPS and DSM Digital Standard MUMPS from DEC was basically the industry standard. It was an ISO Standard language. I believe it now goes mainly under the name CACHE, as Intersystems bought up all its competitors, which were Datatree, MGlobal, Micronetics and Digital's implementation. (IBM licensed Micronetics' version.)

So.. there's a language called "M"..

That no one actually refers to as "M" - that was originally called MUMPS and is mostly called CACHE?

And this means Microsoft screwed up - how exactly? I doubt that anyone other than aficiandos of obscure languages would have known there was a prior M language.

Well it doesn't take a genius to see why - Digital Mars has had a 'D' programming language that is essentially a reworking of C++ to fix a lot of broken stuff in that language.

What MS may not know is the MUMPS programming language is commonly known as 'M', though I think less well known (The fairly young 'D' has had a bit more buzz amongst geeks than the almost 50 year old MUMPS).
