Microsoft to deliver Surface 2.0 software developer kit on July 12

By | July 8, 2011, 6:49am PDT

Microsoft is planning to make the software development kit (SDK) for the new version of the touch-centric Surface 2.0 system available for download on July 12.

The Surface 2.0, which is being manufactured and distributed via Samsung (and is officially known as the SUR40), is expected to be priced at around $7,600 when it debuts later this year. The Surface 2.0 is expected to be thinner, cheaper and more versatile (able to be used horizontally or vertically) than the Surface 1.0 tabletop computer.

At Mix ‘11 in April, Microsoft officials described the coming SDK as enabling developers to create “write once, touch anywhere” applications. They said the new SDK will allow programmers to create applications targeting both touch-enabled Windows 7 PCs and Surface 2.0 systems, which makes sense, given the underlying UI inside the Surface 2.0 is Windows 7.

According to a July 7 blog post on the Microsoft Surface Blog, the new Surface 2.0 will make use of the same Metro interface/design language that is part of the Windows Phone and Zune HD, among other Microsoft products.

The new SDK will be released during Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in Los Angeles next week, and Microsoft execs will be seeking new partners there to develop Surface 2.0 applications and to sell the Samsung-developed systems. Microsoft is creating a new Surface Premier Partner Program to highlight developers who are targeting the Surface 2.0 system. Microsoft also plans to make available a migration tool to help developers who built apps for the Surface 1.0 tabletop to move their programs to the new Surface systems.

Wow! Microsoft is getting more Aggresive with their products and innovations!

Microsoft FTW!!!
The intellectual property and innovation found in Surface helped propel the ipad and all te tablet devices to follow. It is good to see that Microsoft is continuing to innovate and lead.
iPad is just a glorified oversized iPhone.
the iOS is not designed for heavy usage
but for consumers who just to like display their latest Apple toy.

Ballmer is dreaming about ?write once, touch anywhere?.
I think he shold stick with the latter since the former is not going to happen!
@Linux Geek If you have any better idea we would like to know !
@1773 I don't know if we do. He probably thinks GM should give away cars for free. Or that any other car company can incorporate OnStar without permision. happy
@ Mark@... Great response! Also, I'm amazed that an article on a Microsoft product hasn't yet brought out the haters (Linux Geek excluded- he's always around to make stupid comments; I'm surprised Droid hasn't yet thrown in his 2 cents worth- which is usually worth all of 2 cents). Even more amazing is that ms is actually being given credit for their innovations that Apple has so successfully copied and marketed as their own ideas. I have no problem with any company copying the good work of competitors, that's always been done. My real issue is with those who copy and then claim the idea as their own. After all, Henry Ford didn't invent the assembly line method of production, but he never claimed to have done so, after he applied the method to building affordable cars. None of that "it's Magical" crap came ever from him.
@xplorer1959

It's too bad Henry Ford isn't around to teach Steve Jobs a thing or two! There's so many foolish consumers out their strapped with over-priced warez from Apple. Those same consumers are drones that will believe anything they see or hear from an Apple commercial.
@xplorer1959,

" Even more amazing is that ms is actually being given credit for their innovations ..."

By whom exactly?
Hilarious. The iPhone didn't just go away so now they have to pretend that Surface is really supposed to do something.
For you ignorant, insecure haters out there: Linux Geek et al. Remember that what you say is of no concern to the market. Surface 2 is evolving into an interesting viable platform and those of us with two eyes are excited to hear about the release of the SDK. Microsoft delivers yet again!
