Microsoft to launch Office 365 on June 28

By | June 3, 2011, 4:13pm PDT

Microsoft is holding its official launch of its cloud-hosted application suite, known as Office 365, on June 28.

CEO Steve Ballmer will be on hand at the New York launch event, according to an invitation I received.

June 28 also may be the date when the Office 365 service becomes generally available. (I’ve asked Microsoft for confirmation on this. It looks like Office 365 general availability on June28th was confirmed by the head of the Microsoft partner organization, no less — thanks @tomwarren.) I’ve heard recently that Microsoft is planning to sign off on the final version of the service in early June — possibly even next week — and to make it generally available in late June.

Office 365 is Microsoft’s successor to its Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), Live@Edu and Office Live Small Business products. Microsoft has begun educating its partners and customers about its BPOS-to-office 365 migration strategy. Packaging and pricing of the suite already has been announced.

Office 365 consists of Microsoft-hosted Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Lync Online, and also includes for customers who want it, a version of Office Professional Plus that can be installed locally on PCs and paid for per month, on a subscription basis. Office 365 competes head-to-head with Google Apps, and a handful of similar services.

Microsoft has experienced some BPOS service problems in the past month. The Office 365 version of the service is currently still being tweaked and is in beta.

Really good

I have been beta testing Office 365 and I must say, I really like it and have stopped using Google Apps for your Domain. The synchronization of email across my desktop, Outlook, and smart phone is superior to Gmail... Especially the import of email. I was able to import 14GB of email no problem. The ONLY exception is that Office 365 does not Push the marking read of emails from the deskto or online to my phone. I posted this shortcoming in their help forum and was told it would be too data intensive to do so over 3G. GMail does it jutsfine, however.

And it has been a real disappointment. The offline transactions are horrible with many corrupted files. Trying to import and export anything has been met with total failure and Microsoft is unable to explain the outages for this. The Support Forums are no help, they just tell me to 'squirt' the issue via my Zune and they will 'squirt' me back. Uh...okay.
@james347

Yes, that sounds totally not made up.

I had the exact same experience, though I did finally get support via an embedded audio message in a Justin Beiber song that was sent to my Zune.
@james347 I found nothing to like about Office 365. They ought to rename it to Office Zero

Does Apple still pay you when you fail as miserably as you just have?

Maybe it's my imagination. We seem to have encountered a few rendering problems with MacOSX, trying to use Office Live (even Live Mail). And M$ seems not to be quick on MacOSX compatibility testing...

Wondering which organization will crack the Microsoft cloud first. The Iran-crackers, Google-crackers, Sony-crackers, China-crackers, Russian-crackers, ... .
For colored Australians like myself, it might be the best way to prove to the various secret police armies on this planet that I am harmless, and not worth interrogation, imprisoning, etc ... as they have done to me before.
Dead on Arrival.

Businesses only, barely of any use to Indeviduals
MrElectrifyer Updated - 11th Jun
So, this is like having access to and editing all my Office 2010 applications ONLINE...no thanks, I have a laptop with me at all times; think I'll be able to access my documents from just about anywhere at anytime happy

Only useful to indeviduals for sharing live documents, i.e. UserA edits n saves the document, UserB sees the changes instantaneously. Sounds like a document only version of DropBox plain

On the contrary, for businesses, it's an all-in-one service grin
