Microsoft is going to offer a free "Find My Phone" feature for Windows Phone 7 devices that will help users find missing phones with maps, ring tones, lock and erase capabilities.

Company officials announced the new feature, which will be available via a new Windows Phone Live site, on July 13, the second day of the company's Worldwide Partner Conference, attended by more than 14,000.

The new Windows Phone Live site will provide WP7 users with a 25 GB of SkyDrive storage, plus a central place to store and view photos, share Windows Live calendar contacts and exchange files and documents. (It's not clear whether this site will use any of the similar Kin Studio technologies or features. I've asked; stay tuned.)

Update 1: Microsoft officials said the new Windows Phone Live site doesn't make use of anything developed by/for the Kin team. the "Find My Phone" functionality is the successor to Windows Mobile's MyPhone, a company spokesperson said.

Windows Phone 7 devices are expected to be launched in October and to be available from various handset makers and carriers shortly thereafter.  Company officials said today that at launch, Windows Phone 7 will support 5 languages; English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. The Windows Phone Marketplace will support the buying and selling of applications in 17 countries; Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, UK and United States, they added.

Microsoft also announced at the partner conference that it will begin distributing Windows Phone devices to selected mobile developers on July 19. The company also made another beta release available of the Windows Phone Developer Tools on Monday. That SDK includes betas of Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, Windows Phone Emulator, Silverlight for Windows Phone, Expression Blend for Windows Phone and XNA Game Studio 4.0. The final version of the toolset is expected in about a month.

Microsoft unveiled a "find my phone" type service for its Windows Mobile phones a year ago. That service was part of what's known as Microsoft My Phone.

Update No. 2: In other Windows Phone 7 news, Microsoft also announced today that Intuit is developing an SDK for Windows Phone 7, to help developers write Windows Phone 7 applications that interface with the Intuit Partner Platform's cloud services for businesses, including QuickBooks. Intuit and Microsoft announced earlier this year that they were developing an SDK that would connect Intuit's partner Platform services and Windows Azure.

If these things sell as well as we think it is, people are going to need this service because the phones will be so hot people will be stealing them.

@Johnny Vegas I'd be happy if <a href="http://www.trsohbet.com">sohbet</a> got rid of the ribbon and gave us <a href="http://www.trsohbet.com">chat</a> users the pull-down menus that existed before Office 2007 for <a href="http://www.forumuz.net/">forum</a>. I like getting Outlook for the <a href="http://www.trsohbet.com/portal/">portal</a>. It has grown on me since my new Windows <a href="http://video.trsohbet.com">izlesene</a> box had to use Outlook since <a href="http://www.trsohbet.com">chat sohbet</a> was removed. email client is <a href="http://www.trsohbet.com.tr">mynet sohbet</a> <a href="http://www.trsohbet.com.tr">cinsel sohbet</a> weak.

The same advertisers that brought us Seinfeld (lets play footsie and wiggle our shorts Bill), Laptop Hunters (that got all sorts of bad press for lies (incorrect pricing and customer never actually went into an Apple store) and portraying windows as "cheep"), And Windows 7 was Macs idea (where a college kid who can't get laid and get kicked out of his dorm room (by his Mac roommate) has to watch TV in the hall because he doesn't even have a friend whom he could visit).

        I bet Kinect will<a href="http://www.gopsohbet.net" title="cinsel sohbet" target="_blank">cinsel sohbet</a> not be magical either.
IE8 had multi-process architecture before Chrome launched, and in fact<a href="http://sohbettir.com" title="sohbet" target="_blank">sohbet</a> was the first browser to announce the feature. <a href="http://www.gopsohbet.net" title="gay sohbet" target="_blank">gay sohbet</a> That's why both Chrome and IE use far more memory than the other browsers.<a href="http://www.alemchat.net" title="mynet sohbet" target="_blank">mynet sohbet</a> Chrome is a bit more strict than IE, IE will allow tabs with the same integrety level to <a href="http://www.eskimynetsohbet.com" title="mynet sohbet" target="_blank">mynet sohbet</a> share a single process.<a href="http://www.eskimynetsohbet.com" title="mynet" target="_blank">mynet</a> <a href="http://www.mynetci.com" title="mynet sohbet" target="_blank">mynet sohbet</a> Outside of that MS beat Google to the punch.<a href="http://www.mynetci.com" title="mynet" target="_blank">mynet</a> Good try though.<a href="http://www.indirmedenfilmizlehd.com" title="indirmeden film izle" target="_blank">indirmeden film izle</a>If MS came out with touch UIs for at least Word, Excel,<a href="http://sohbettir.com/forum" title="forum" target="_blank">forum</a> OneNote, and Outlook, with super slick, and highly<a href="http://eglence.sohbettir.com" title="youtube" target="_blank">youtube</a> effective integrated virtual keyboards, that would be mind blowing! This service is awesome that consumers can easily detect their phones either misplaced or stolen. A "hide and seek" software by Microsoft is free only for Windows Phone 7.

  • Didn't Apple create this service for its phone years ago?

I don't have an Apple phone, but my MobileMe service seems to have a button to locate iPhones.

  • RE: Microsoft to offer free 'Find My Phone' service for Windows Phone 7

That's great but when will we see a Windows 7 Phone? MS is ridiculously slow in coming out with the mobile OS. We've been hearing about it for a year and still no phone no OS....

By the time they actually release something it will be so outdated it'll be practically useless.

  • If it's anything like a Window's PC, I'd throw it away...? What that????

Microsoft added this feature as Users will regularly throw their
"Windows Phone 7" in anger when it doesn't work properly fills up with viruses and makes their life hell. Later they will calm down release how much they spent on the stupid thing and need to locate it in that long grass. Just one problem. If they've thrown their phone what do they use to call Microsoft on to find it? LOL!!
