Muglia's e-mail to the Microsoft troops: 'I'm moving on to new opportunities outside of Microsoft'

Summary: We’ve seen Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s January 10 e-mail to the troops about Server and Tools Business (STB) Unit President Bob Muglia’s unexpected departure from the company. But we haven’t heard from Muglia — until now.

We’ve seen Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s January 10 e-mail to the troops about Server and Tools Business (STB) Unit President Bob Muglia’s unexpected departure from the company. But we haven’t heard from Muglia — until now.

This is a copy of the e-mail Muglia sent to STB employees today about his pending departure this summer. I don’t read much between the lines. I’ve seen some questioning whether Muglia was “all in” with Microsoft’s transition to the cloud. Muglia addressed that issue directly in his missive, saying he “deeply enjoyed my role in positioning Microsoft as a leader and innovator in cloud computing.”

From what I’ve heard from Softies I know, Muglia was a solid and respected manager, and one who took a lot of pride in what his team accomplished. Those sentiments come through in his note.

Muglia also doesn’t say where he’s going once he leaves Microsoft, but I’d bet any of Microsoft’s enterprise competitors would be vying to get the 23-year veteran on their teams.

Here’s BobMu’s departure note:

“Last week I celebrated 23 years working for Microsoft. During that time Microsoft has grown from a brilliant, yet awkward and aggressive adolescent riding a rocket ship into a mature industry leader. I’ve learned an amazing amount from the people with whom I’ve worked, from the customers I’ve served, and from the many partners who share this industry. I feel blessed to have had the privilege of working with so many great people. Later this year, I’m moving on to new opportunities outside of Microsoft, so I wanted to take a few minutes to share with you what’s important to me in life and leadership.

“The foundation of who I am is based on living with integrity. Integrity requires principles, and my primary principle is to focus on doing the right thing, as best I can. The best thing, to the best of my ability, for our customers, our products, our shareholders, and of course, our people.

“Other principles, or guideposts by which I live, are learning from and listening to others to make the best decision possible; not being afraid to admit a mistake and change a decision when it is wrong; being consistently honest, even when it hurts; treating our customers, partners, and people with the respect they deserve, with the expectation that each of my actions forms the basis of a lifetime relationship; and finally, being willing to admit and apologize when I have not lived up to these principles.

“Integrity is my cornerstone for leading people. Leading starts by setting a strategy - not one that I’ve dreamed up myself but something that my team has worked together to create. The strategy provides the North Star for each person.
The second part of leading people is creating a structure that enables collaboration and provides clarity of roles and responsibilities. This is more than an organizational structure; it is creating a system so people can work together effectively and productively, in an environment that makes it possible for each person to give their best.

“Leading is more than strategy and structure; it’s all about people. Choosing the right people for each role is critical, but insufficient. Even more important is empowering every person to be their best, to work with others, to be as creative as possible. It’s about providing each and every person with encouragement when they’ve done something amazing and constructive feedback when they are off track.

“While each individual is important, success requires a team. The team is more important than the needs or capabilities of any individual. This is what makes a team much more than the sum of the parts, and a joy to be part of.

“That brings me to delivering results. Results are built when people act with integrity and deliver their best. Results are all about the positive impact we have on the world – transforming personal lives and revolutionizing ways of doing business.

“As a leader at Microsoft, I have a responsibility for delivering results to our shareholders. STB has performed well – with revenue growing from $9.7B in 2006 before I took over, to $14.9B reported last July, and operating income climbing from $3B to $5.5B over the same period. That’s over a 50% increase in revenue with a near doubling in income. That growth continued during the first quarter of our FY11. There are few organizations in the industry who have demonstrated the same results.

“I am incredibly excited by the emergence of cloud computing, and the opportunity it represents to shape business and the way people live for years to come. I have deeply enjoyed my role in positioning Microsoft as a leader and innovator in cloud computing.

“The coming months are a time of transition.  During this time, I will be fully engaged in leading STB until new leadership is in place. After that, I will continue to do everything I can to help Microsoft, STB, and all of you.

“I particularly want to recognize the outstanding work done by my current team in the Server and Tools Business over the past four years. We rapidly built a series of best-of-breed products that changed the way businesses run, while helping our customers and partners be successful. We’ve led the industry while facing tough competitors, most notably Linux, VMware, and Oracle. We succeeded by focusing on the simple idea that our customers make smart decisions, so we need to provide the best solution for everything our customers want to do with our products.

“Microsoft is a blessing in my life and a blessing for my family. I love working with our customers and partners. Most of all, I treasure the wonderful and bright people with whom I’m privileged to work each day. I hope that in some way, large or small, I have helped each of you to lead your life with your own deep sense of integrity, that you help to bring out the best in other people, and deliver the results that matter most to you.

“My best to you, with thanks,

bob”

Any guesses where Muglia may end up going? I hear there’s a growing band of ex-Softies over at VMware….

I'll guess was he was being demoted
John Zern 10th Jan 2011
and chose to leave instead.

He likely has enough money and a great serverence package that he'll be able to take his time and find something interesting moving forward.

Given the company's history over the 23 years he was with them the email is somewhat assuming:-)

Flude, you never fail.
xuniL_z 10th Jan 2011
Flude, as witty as you think you are, it's really just the same old, monotone, dull as ever, year after year after year after year "MS bashing" that defines who you are as a person.

congrats. wink

xuniL_z, funny thing is
Richard Flude 10th Jan 2011
my position has been vindicated. It's fun to reread past post of the MS fanboys and articles by the Ou's and Carrolls (the later's MS attraction having wilted).

MS never had any integrity, nor any inventiveness. Those pointing it out were told only the dumb can't see the emperors clothes. Time after time they were shown to be wrong, but still they mocked.

Positively fun to read ZDNet these days. Fought for years to reveal out the truth. Now it's there everyday. Time to bask in the sunshine:-)

Was it b/c of SilverLight-gate?
LBiege 10th Jan 2011
Muglia was probably punished for putting his foot in mouth when talking about SilverLight in PDC.
@John Zern

I think he's seen the hand writing on the wall and knows that virtual is the future. He'll probably go with VMware.

Guess he shouldn't have spoken his mind (on Silverlight).
I thought his candor would get him in trouble.
wtf? another one (exec) bites the dust? I'd be curious to see how this internal politics plays out..
@mossyblog

Considering he was just promoted to President in 2009.... things cannot be well.......such a shame
Everything you need to know about the situation is in what is absent from the email, there's no "Thank you Steve for all the support and guidance during my career...I learned so much from you..." Enough said!
@GWriterZ

Actually this was an email to his team, so it wouldn't make sense to thank his boss.

Nice statement
Oslik 10th Jan 2011
I liked his presentations a lot and this e-mail is great, but I'm not a Softie and, of course, I cannot evaluate his real performance. I'm not trying to guess if he (or whoever in that company) represents the light or dark side of the Force. Let's see.

I just want to say that, except for some missteps, Microsoft's server products stood above controversions most of the time and just served as solid tools.
He should take some night classes on marketing and PR. Learn how to position corporate strategy to people like... well Mary-Jo.

Many Silverlight developers wanted blood. I would have settled on a "I Heart Silverlight" tattoo but I guess this will have to do.
He should be replacing Ballmer, not the other way around.
@Doobi .. Ballmer is eliminating anyone in house with the credentials and know how to replace him. In his little pea brain that is "job security for dummies"

Reading between the lines
kingkong88@... 10th Jan 2011
One way of reading his message is that in Microsoft now there is no integrity, no principle of doing the right thing, no clarity of roles and responsibilities, no listening to others, no admitting of mistakes and changing decision if it's wrong, and there's no teamwork.

Otherwise, why would he be bringing up these things at this point in time?
@kingkong88@... You know!? That's what I was thinking.
Translation:

"RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!! ABANDON YOUR POSTS!!!"
Hey all

He's done the right thing, but, bit later.
See this: http://team.silverlight.net/announcement/pdc-and-silverlight/

After his irresponsible and disaster comment to MJ, he should've gone. Including Balmer, ScottGu, and the whole MS Team posted retraction posts on his comment about Silverlight, when MS is trying to make it everywhere. It's a very very big mishap on his level. He's out of touch with the MS community.

Good it happened at least now.

New guard
ng100 10th Jan 2011
I doubt this change has anything to do with Silverlight. MS is changing guard to allow fresh ideas. At the CES, Steve Ballmer told a reporter this is no longer your Father?s Microsoft. That comment rhymes with this story.
@ng100

whatever it is. Bob level people and MJ like somone who's dedicated spending time on MS should'nt do anything harmful to it's community. PERIOD.
When an executive can not criticise the products of their own company openly, and invite feedback, that company is heading in the *wrong* direction.

First off, Silverlight is free, and I as a consumer can freely install it, or not, it is not 'bundled' with Windows. (In Win8 it probably is).

Secondary, consumers hate technologies like Silverlight and Flash. Come HTML5 there will be massive change, come IPv6 there will be massive change, come the Chinese growth online ... there will be massive change.

Thirdly, Silverlight needs to be criticised publicly, before it transforms into a 'Frankenstein' like creation.

I've got nothing against Ballmer, but Gates really seemed to run the company better - or rather the company was better run back in the days when Gates was still around (CEO or otherwise, as he moved around after it grew).
@scott2010au

If consumers hated technologies like Flash and Silverlight so much, they wouldnt' be installed on 95% and 60% of PC's, respectively.

So what is it, precisely and spcifically, that you "hate" about Silverlight? In my experience, it's been an extraordinarily powerful tool for creating really rich and immersive apps and experiences that can integrate deeply with the resources and featuresof the client machine.
Wonderful produce the outcomes! You extraordinary the expertise of inventive building. I individually cherished the summarization particularly nfljerseys the proper motion of fantastic innovative hints.
I viewed your weblog on google and look and feel at quite a bit of of this early posts. Shield up the excellent run. I just a great deal more up your RSS feed to my MSN Information mulberry outlet store Reader.
