Aaron Ardiri ports Lemmings from PalmOS to multiple platforms in 36 hours

Summary: Fully playable on iPhone, Palm, Mac, Windows and Linux.

SHARE:

On June 23rd Aaron Ardiri started live blogging a challenge to himself: porting his old PalmOS-based version of Lemmings to multiple platforms. Well, a mere 36 development hours later and he has a fully playable version compiled natively for four platforms, complete with sound, awaiting approval on the App Store (iPhone) and App Catalog (Palm), and freely available immediately for Windows and Mac on his blog.

I just had a chance to play around with the iPhone version, after playing the Mac version the other day, and have to say that it's flawless. The touch response is spot-on and I even shot the video below to prove that it really does work. Hopefully Apple will let it through so that everyone can enjoy the game.

Congrats to Aaron! Apparently he's now thinking of extending his dev environment to include a port to Android. Let's all weigh in on the comments below to help push him into challenging himself, yet again.

Make it yourself on your open platform, that's what you bought it for isn't it?

Coolaaron88 should have read the article but saying 'make it yourself' just because the platform is open is an unfair dig at Android. Making/Porting a game to Android isn't something an average Android user can do. You are imply that the reason people select Android based phones is so they can write their own applications. This is definitely not the motivation behind most individuals that buy an Android phone. They just want a phone and the fact that Android is open or not isn't really the motivation for an average user, it is more a motivation for a developer to write to that platform over another. If I was doing a multi-platform mobile app I would do dev for iPhone first then Android then blackberry then webOS. That seems to be the progression these days but sometimes blackberry jumps in front of Android due to existing market share and all.

  • I hope for his sake he wrote all the iPhone code by hand

If he didn't, Apple won't accept it.

I just downloaded it and tried it on Snow Leopard. All I get on my iMac is a notice that SCEE has nothing to do with the port. No key on the keyboard or mouseclick gets me past that screen. I hope it's just a problem with an early build.

    What? No Android version?!

  • This would be sweet to get my hands on

I hope Apple approves it but I am sure there are code and licensing implications and they will not. We will see.

I would love to see an Android port as well. The iPhone is the best phone right now but I am hoping Google and hardware manufacturers start narrowing the gap over the next year or so. I am expecting they will.

There is definitely a bigger market on Android than Pre but I see why Aaron picked webOs port first given this apps heritage.

Don't forget that Lemmings (released by Psygnosis) started on the Commodore Amiga!!! :)

Wow, how appropriate that there is an iPhone version! I've been stating for years that iPhone users are just a bunch of Lemmings doing what Uncle Stevie tells them they can do. Now, they can play with themselves!!! ;-)
