What can you do with an HP webOS-powered printer?

By | May 18, 2010, 7:48pm PDT

Summary: HP recently made a deal to purchase Palm and with that there is speculation on what HP will do with webOS. We heard today that one future product will be a webOS-powered printer.

Sam wrote earlier about the latest HP earnings report and one thing that was interesting from the analysts call was that HP is looking to take Palm’s webOS to slates and printers. Yes, you read that correctly, we can expect a webOS-powered printer in the future from HP. At first glance you may be asking why in the world they would do such a thing, but based on my experiences with Palm webOS and trying out the HP Photosmart web-enabled printer at the store with a full color touchscreen and cool user interface I can actually see value in this for HP.

On the HP Photosmart printer I tried out my daughter and I were able to print out coloring book pages, create directions and print out Google Maps, search for movie times and even order tickets, and more. Palm’s webOS is one of the slickest, most intuitive mobile operating systems and it actually seems quite natural to me that HP would take this UI to their printer line to significantly enhance their printer products. Imagine using pinch to zoom in a photo editor, print out Google Maps directions, check your contacts or schedule with Palm’s Synergy and print out data you want to physically share with someone, check out a New York Times article and print it, and more. HP can take what they learned on their current web-enabled printer and get even more out of it with a solid mobile OS with a growing list of applications.

I want an Android microwave oven!
gjafg 18th May 2010
Sounds crazy, but touch screen smartphone interfaces would do really well on all kinds of household appliances.

I'd like an Android microwave oven, because my conventional microwave has the worst interface imaginable.

And how 'bout an Android phone? Rather than pressing buttons to review your pictures, you scroll your fingers across the screen and pull them across.

There are appliances that don't even need connectivity, but a touchscreen smartphone interface would make them easier to use.
Arm processor. We need Arm processor packages that are more like a microcontroller package that have touch screen controller, RAM, flash, etc, built in, in the same package. But, if they can get it low enough so it only adds 20 dollars to the cost of the appliance, why not. Android or WebOS are both very good choices.

I want my HP webOS Lawnmower!!
zdnetviewer 19th May 2010
I can set my Palm Pre calendar schedule to have my HP webOS Lawnmower run every weekend while I work on other things. When it's done, I want the HP webOS Lawnmower to send me the coordinates and a photo of where weeds were found so I can do the dirty work later.

Wifee will want the HP webOS vacuum cleaner. These iRobots are clumsy and innefficient. With an HP webOS vacuum cleaner plotting and planning where to go and what to do should be a lot easier on a multi-touch Palm Pre or Pixi screen with better brains to know exactly when to recharge and where to recharge. Using the HP webOS vacuum as a mobile home monitoring surveillance device will be a plus!

HP with webOS is going to be the future!
Will Adobe interfaces such as Acrobat and FlashPlayer be included? What other formats will this printer be able to access and use?
