What market disrupting device will Nokia reveal on 21 June?

Summary: Nokia hasn't exactly embraced MeeGo as a platform of choice, but it looks like they may be revealing some details next week. Then again, maybe they will simply show another Symbian device.

SHARE:

Even as a fan of Nokia products, it is a bit difficult for me to get too excited about a MeeGo device given that Nokia had very little to say at the recent MeeGo Conference and has committed to Windows Phone for its primary smartphone platform. The folks at iTWire received an invite to a special Nokia event on Tuesday 21 June where Nokia will reveal a "new market disrupting device."

That is quite a bold claim that I seriously doubt can happen at this point with people focused on iOS and Android platforms. Nokia did not state that it was a MeeGo device, but it is the only thing possible given that Windows Phone isn't coming until late 2011 and there is nothing remotely market disrupting about the Symbian platform.

I'm sure I will want to play with a MeeGo device, but just because they might reveal one doesn't mean it will be launching right away either. And given Nokia's track record for announcing and delivering we may not even see this MeeGo device launch until next year. Any readers excited about a MeeGo device at this point?

    • Agreed

@Johnny Vegas Meego, Moblin and its other brothers and sisters have not garnered enough market interest to warrant a prwire.com press release, much less a launch event.

I believe it is something related to Nokia Services and the reachability. I may be completely off too.

OK, they have some WP7 device. Others did, so they should be able to make one.
It will probably look very similar to the ones already on the market. Not very Nokia like. Perhaps the design coming from the competition or even MS.
But it will be useful to create headlines and calm down shareholders critics for some time.

It's a damn shame that a company known for quality hardware failed to keep up with the OS market. I love my N95 and lament giving it up. The N96 & N97 were steps backwards IMHO.

@dalenscott@... I had a N78, got soaked in a storm and finally died a few months later, and now a N97 and have had excellent experiences with both phones. I would love for Nokia to continue to make N-series Symbian devices.

I abosulely am excited about a Meego device. Every time someone releases a new cell phone OS the industry people say it won't go anywhere. You did it with Apple (Apple isn't a cell phone company) and then again for android (apple hasm the entire market sewn up). so far you've always been wrong. It's time for a mobile OS that's not run by a tyrant (Apple) and doesn't suck (Android). whether that is MeeGo we'll find out later. Win Mobile will kill Nokia though. They're pulling a Palm.

Just a shame Nokia will put little effort behind it, having taken Microsoft's 30 pieces of silver.

Perhaps they are using it as a marketing disruption/distraction, masking they have no WP7 handsets for some reason, and it is questionable whether Santa will have any either.

  • N9 Meego Phone with Symbian like Interface

It looks like they are releasing the N9 Meego Phone with an interface that looks alot like Symbian.

Nokia considers Meego to be a market disrupting device, if it has Symbian bits in the interface it might matter to all the current Symbian Phone owners.

Unfortunately, Nokia is a has-been. They are unable to disrupt *any* markets these days.
