Who needs a new iPhone when you have iOS4?

By | June 22, 2010, 10:21am PDT

Summary: With multitasking, task switching, task management, threaded e-mail and more, Apple’s latest mobile OS breathes new life into your old iPhone.

I’ve been using iOS4 on my iPhone 3GS for a couple of weeks now. As a result, I believe I have experienced every known bug at this point and have to say that compared to previous OS releases, this thing is solid.

There have been many reports of crashes, failures to upgrade, and the like, but for me the upgrade was fast and easy, and I only experience crashing and hanging of apps when running an application that wasn’t really designed to multi-task. Thankfully, Apple anticipated this, and gives you the ability to kill background apps, which basically means you have a task manager at your disposal.

There are a number of new features loaded in iOS4, and the folks at lifehacker have detailed a bunch of them. For me, the most used features are the app folders, multitasking, threaded mail, and improvements in the camera app.

Folders: The folders themselves are as close as Apple is letting us get to customizing, and as you can see, I’m really just using mine as a way of collecting apps into like categories. I prefer the generic names like Utilities and Games, just to keep things simple, and then still search on the iPhone for a particular app, as needed. I also have created a Folder in the bottom row, so that I can have easy access to my favorite apps at all times.

Multitasking: I was not a believer in Apple’s implementation until I actually started using it. Initially the software tries to make educated guesses as to what apps should stay in the background. The nice thing is that you have the ability to swipe through the list and then even close them out if you don’t want them running. I’ve done a bunch of tests on performance and it seems that even with a ton of apps running in the background, I haven’t noticed any performance improvements once they’re all removed. That said, I’m still not noticing poor performance with them all running, either, so Apple has done a decent job with this implementation. You can also use this same swiping method to swipe and tap, to switch to another running app. So, you have a task switcher and a task manager.

If you haven’t noticed that much of a difference with Multitasking, try loading up some newly compiled apps that are build for iOS4. You can usually spot the difference since when you leave the app and then return to it, it will start exactly where it left off. Previously developers could save the state, but it wouldn’t always return you to the exact position.

Threaded Mail: This feature is exactly as it sounds. It takes some getting used to, but if you use the Mail client on the iPhone, you’ll be impressed with its ability to now thread. That means that you’ll finally be able to follow the conversation, similar to the way you do with GMAIL. I use GMAIL as my main e-mail, but I also use the Mail app on the iPhone. With threaded mail it’s definitely much easier to manage my e-mail now.

Camera: I take a lot of pictures and videos with my iPhone 3GS. Now the camera snaps a lot faster and also includes 5x digital zoom. If you shoot video you’ll be happy to see the tap to focus implemented, too. The digital zoom does a decent job, but I still recommend staying away from it if you can since it can yield blurry photos. I also noticed that with a faster shutter speed, it seems that my iPhone can’t take in-motion photos as easily and is rendering them blurry a lot of the time. I’m going to test that more, but that’s an unfortunate side effect of the upgrade so far.

As I mentioned above, there are a ton of new features to enjoy with iOS4, but first make sure that your backup to your iTunes was successful.

With the uncertainly around whether or not your iPhone is really pre-ordered, this free upgrade to iOS4 might just be all you need to keep you happy with your iPhone for another year.

iOS4 email Hanging problem
IPlaw 24th Jun 2010
Apple support told me to remove my MobileMe mail account from the phone and add it in manually. Also delete contacts and calendars as they will be re-synced back from the MobileMe 'cloud' to the iPhone. I did this, restarted the phone and I started to get my push notifications from my MobileMe account again and Mail stopped 'hanging' for me. They told me that another solution would be to restore the phone to new. Don't sync it to a back up as the old 'corrupt' data will sync back to the phone and you will be left with the same issues.

I guess this is only relevant if you have a MobileMe account. My thoughts would be to back up all important data such as photos, music, apps, emails, notes, contacts and calendars before restoring the phone and then add everything back manually.

They did say that they are aware of these issues and will be addressing the problem.

Apple addicts, which drive it's sales "need" the newest and latest or they are left with an empty helpless feeling that makes them feel worthless. It really is that simple. Of course you don't need a new iPhone if you get the new OS. But you are thinking logically which is not a wide spread with Apple fanboys, addicts, whatever one calls them. Look at the crazed purchase of the crippled iPad. It lacks so many things a piece of moble tech should just HAVE to have today to be successful; it is a cripple. But they buy them without thought. They run to the I Store to be the first one to have one.

@skudera@... Probably also people with an original iphone or iphone 3g. You know.. Because selling a 3G on ebay practically pays for an iPhone 4. That seems like a good reason to get one.

Still rockin' that palm treo 90 in fear of looking like a "fanboy", skud?

For instance the claim that iPad sales have been driven by Apple fans? How would you know? By what standards do you come by this claim? How does one measure an Apple fan vs a simple consumer? I mean what if the guy who just bought an iPad owns a PC? But wait he also owns an HTC and an Sonly Playstation 3 but he also owns an iTouch? What does that make him/her and Apple fan or an average consumer? I own an iPhone 3GS and an iMac but I also own an XBox 360 and before that I owned an XBox. I'm betting you don't have a scrap of data not a single fact that backs your rants up do you?

The problem with your statements is the numbers (their market performance) doesn't support your thoughts. Here are few examples. Most ipods were sold to people who had never used an Apple product. The majority of iphones sales, thus far, were sold to people who didn't own one previously. Currently more than half of all iPad's sold were to people who use windows. Quietly the iPad, by the way, has become 1/3 of the netbook market in 3 months time.

Clearly it isn't the case Apple's pretty designs are being consumed by apple fanboys who always have to have the latest Apple offering. Rather Apple is finding ways to appeal to consumers who traditionally haven't rewarded Apple with their business. And that is the reality.

@psquared007 Each folder holds 12 games and judging by the pics 3 of those are full - so I'd say he's got 51 games on there... Nice!

Odd pair of comments: "I believe I have experienced every known bug at this point and have to say that compared to previous OS releases, this thing is solid."

and

"There have been many reports of crashes, failures to upgrade, and the like, but for me the upgrade was fast and easy, and I "

Seems like upgrade bugs should be counted.

to a iPhone 4. I think the iPhone 4 is a bigger upgrade over what the 3GS was to the 3G or the 3GS is to the 4. I have a couple people in my family/friends that get one every time a new one comes out but I tend to not do that. I skipped the first one as I knew a 3G capable one was coming out in about a year and skipped the 3GS because it wasn't much of an upgrade at the time. Some people feel the need to have the latest Apple gadget or piece of technology but you have to consider if you truly need it. If you have the money to burn then go ahead I guess.

getting the 4. Nor do I own and iPad. If anything at all I'm thinking of getting the iMac 27" since I own an 24" and use it as my TV so the 27" will be an improvement on that fact alone:P

Just have to be sensible with your purchases. I have a friend that is a die hard Apple fan and refuses to use anything thing other than apple and has a 24" iMac, Macbook, iPhone 3GS (had the two previous models and pre-ordered the iPhone 4) and he also has a iPod touch 3rd Gen and an iPad which I think is redundant if you ask me. He has Apple TV and constantly tries to tell me that it is so much better than my media center set up but I do not see how that is since they do basically the same thing. I just use my XBOX as an extension of the Media Center instead of the AppleTV.

IMO I think he just has way too much money and the sad part is he doesn't pay for it. Mommy and Daddy own their own law firm and he basically works a low end job while they pay for his condo, his two cars and all of his toys.

I also own an XBox 360 and before that an XBox. Just so you know I'm not a total Apple fan to the exclusion of everyone else.

I see no reason to get an iPhone 4. Unless you need that front facing video what's the point. In fact, I just bought the extra year of Apple care for my iPhone, I figured since Apple isn't going to cover drops or water or things like that no point in giving them extra warranty money until my phone survives almost a year without such damage.

Overall I like the update, no performance hits that I can detect.

Who? I do... I have a 3G iPhone
Nihon8888 22nd Jun 2010
I upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS4 and basically no problems (except for Google Apps Sync with Exchange which is now fixed but not understand that was more a Google issue). However I don't get the full iOS4 experience e.g. no multitasking. So I am tempted to go the iPhone 4 for the overall improved experience.
Having said that the iOS4 on the iPhone 3G is has some cool features and does improve the phone.

@PedroTabs I'm with you - I do like iOS4 on my 3G and will probably jailbreak it but I have to admit the new iPhone 4 looks pretty good compared to my 3G.

Remember the new iPhone has
Scriptomatik Updated - 23rd Jun 2010
a second camera, a new 5MP camera (I would prefer to have better quality videos in my archive), second microphone, glass on both sides so no more scratches on the back, new antenna design that I hope will improve the reception of the signal a little bit, better processor, gyro for new games and apps, thinner (I'm fine with my 3GS size, but this is improvement anyway). So, in conclusion, if you have extra money and desire - get it, if not - keep your old phone, it's up to you.

I'm not sure if I need it so much as really want it - I am a bit bummed that a 64GB model was not an option but considering if I do upgrade I'm going from a 16GB 3G to a 32GB iPhone4 it's still 2x the storage, 4x the ram, 4x the processor, and I'd get the full iOS4 rather than one with some of the features blocked out...
