Zune 3.1 firmware gives you 3 new games, price drops for flash Zunes tooIt has been 2 months since the major Zune 3.0 update and couple of new devices were released. Today Microsoft released the Zune 3.1 update that adds 3 new games and makes some stability and performance improvements. Also, they should be announcing a small price cut on the Zune tomorrow in time for the holidays.

The three new games for the Zune are Space Battle, SuDoKu, and Checkers. They also added multiplayer enhancements to the Texas Hold'Em game, added a new "Like Minded Listeners" feature, and eliminated some of the lag sometimes seen in the Zune hardware. The great thing about the Zune is that even the first generation devices are upgradeable to the latest firmware.

The new price cuts apply only to the flash-based models with the 4GB dropping US$99.99 from US$129.99, the 8GB model dropping to US$139.99 from US$149.99, and the 16GB dropping to US$179.99 from US$199.99. Accessory prices will also be reduced. There are no price drops for the hard drive based Zune models.

  • Oh Zune Phone...

...where for art thou. Hopefully Microsoft realizes that people don't want to carry two devices around, and build the Zune Phone that so many of us want. I don't understand why they're not going after this massive potential revenue stream. It's not like their partners are building anything worth buying.

    • It's not like MS

is building anything worth buying either. The folks who like the Zune are in a distinct minority.

MS has probably looked at the numbers and figured they can only stretch their Office and Windows profits to cover so many product failures.

      • They're actually much better than iPods

I've over the years I've had flash based rio, samsung, and sansa, an 80G classic iPod, a nano3, and flash Zune. I can honestly say the Zune is hands down the best of all of them and in many ways including audio quality, usability, and features.

I've also had very good experiences with all the MS mice and keyboards I've had. I think the ergo feel of them is better than logitech.

I don't own an XBox but have heard they're very good as game consoles go.

I think overall MS has a very good track record with HW. I wish they'd do a Zune phone. I'm thinking of buying a 16G Zune soon and I'd much rather save the $179 and put it towards a Zune phone. I am on board the one device train...

      • Huh?

Yeah, that's right that don't make anything worth buying! That's why they utterly dominate the end user software market.

Ever hear of Xbox 360? The hardware flaws be what they may (at least they don't cost anything!) it's a great platform. I have a 13 and 10 year old and let me tell you, the next generation of high end gaming will be Xbox. None of their friends want PS3's, and some are selling their Wii's (or getting both, the little brats!)

        How about mice and keyboards?

I'm no MS fanboy, though I was when it was when Excel and Word weren't mainstream . . . Word Imperfect stunk and Lotus was a nonsensical beast! But let's not be blind to the fact that people, in the end, spend only on what they need or want.

    • zune interface in winmo

The Zune-style interface will be included in windows mobile releases, so whichever winmo phone you have will also be a "zune".

I think I'll stick with my Archos. You kids can keep your Apple and Microsoft junk.
