It is not only the start of a new year, it is also a banner day for me with the launch of the Mobile News blog on ZDNet. My name is James Kendrick and I have been using mobile devices since they weighed 30 pounds. I have been covering mobile tech for almost that long and am thrilled to join the esteemed team of bloggers at ZDNet. You'll find the top news of the day on the Mobile News blog, along with a sense of what it means from a user's perspective.

I fittingly cover the mobile space at Mobile Manor, my home office that sees more gadgets come and go than the local Best Buy. These gadgets include smartphones, notebooks, tablets and accessories of all types. This is good for you, as you'll find more than news at Mobile News, you'll find hands-on reviews of hot gear of all makes and models. I will also share personal usage experience with various mobile technologies, to help you get the most of the gear you already have.

Who is James Kendrick?

You may be wondering who this James Kendrick guy is and why you should care? I have been working online in some capacity for as long as the Internet has been open for business. Longer than that, actually, as my first online gig was as forum moderator for the IBM Aptiva forum on Compuserve. You remember Compuserve, perhaps vaguely.

You may have run across my work on the jkOnTheRun blog that I founded in 2004. That blog covered all aspects of mobile technology from a user's perspective, and grew so popular it was designated as a Top Technology Blog by CNET shortly after launch. In 2008 jkOnTheRun was acquired by the GigaOM media empire founded by Om Malik; I continued to write for GigaOM until recently when the opportunity to blog at ZDNet happened along.

I am a true platform agnostic when it comes to mobile gear, as I firmly believe in using the best tool for the job at hand. My main desktop setup is a unibody MacBook (not Pro) connected to a 24-inch external monitor. When I head out of the office to work in a mobile fashion, it is almost always a Windows notebook that makes the trip as I currently have five of them in the Manor, ranging from 5-inches to a whopping 18.4-inches.

I have been using tablets since the release of the original Tablet PC by Microsoft in the early 2000s, and as an avid enthusiast of the form am excited about the explosion of the tablets kicked off by the iPad. I have an iPad on my desk, along with a 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab running Android that I find is a very useful slate. I have a 10-inch Windows touch tablet by Australian firm Tegatech, the TEGA v2, that is the thinnest Windows tablet I have seen to date.

I was an early adopter of the smartphone, and have used every platform. My current phone is the HTC EVO 4G on the Sprint network, which is running Android 2.2 (Froyo). It replaced the Palm Pre running webOS, which replaced an iPhone 3G, which replaced a BlackBerry. I told you I am platform agnostic, in fact I have been called a fanboy for every mobile platform that exists.

Welcome to Mobile News!

I will be hanging out here full-time, bringing you the top news in the mobile space each day. That news coverage will come with breakdowns of what it all means and why you should care. The news coverage will be liberally sprinkled with first-hand reviews of both gear and apps, along with accounts of how to get the most out of both. Long-time readers of my work tell me that these first-person accounts of actually using the technology are unique on the Web and very popular. You'll find a lot of that here on Mobile News. You can reach me here through the blog and also find me on Twitter (@jkendrick) most of the time. I'm always up for a good mobile tech discussion.

Welcome James! ZDNet really needs more bloggers of your calibre. There are some great ones here, like Matt Miller, Adrian K-H, Mary Foley, and a few others.

Like many others, I have followed your here from jkontherun. I hope you, Kevin and Matt will get MTR back on as a podcast - it is by far the best as it relates to mobile tech.

    Good luck!

  • Congrats and welcome back

Congratulations James. Glad to see you're back and writing what you want to write. As a long time reader (first was a "day in the life" article in Pocket PC that featured WinCE) I stopped, well, Kevin said you joined GO two years and five months ago, so about two years and four months ago, as the feel of the writing disappeared. You have a real talent and are a very engaging writer so I'm glad you're back. Looking forward to your your new gig.
