One iPad phenomenon that Android can't counter

Summary: Android tablet makers do everything they can to make products that compete with the top dog, iPad. That's fine and dandy but the iPad has one advantage that Android cannot touch.

The iPad is the undisputed leader in the tablet race, and by a wide margin. This is especially true if you treat each Android tablet as a single competitor, which it is, instead of lumping them all together as an Android tablet army. Even if you do the lumping, the lion's share of tablet sales belong to the iPad. Try as they might to compete with Apple's iPad, Android tablet makers find one iPad advantage that leaves them in the dust and always will.

Most gadget buyers have a tendency to buy accessories for them, from simple cases to more exotic items that extend the usefulness of the device. I am as bad as anyone in this regard, the first thing I do after buying a new gadget is look at accessories to outfit the new toy.

I own an iPad 2 and several Android tablets, and one thing is clear -- there is no comparison to the wealth of third party iPad accessories when compared to those for Android tablets. This is due to the success of the iPad, and the lead in the market it has enjoyed. Many iPad accessories also work with the iPod Touch and iPhone, another reason there are so many of them by design. Owners of new Android tablets on the contrary soon find a frustrating lack of accessories to get for their new slate.

While simple accessories like cases may eventually make it to the market for top-selling Android tablets, not much else does. Buyers are limited to accessories the tablet makers choose to offer for their particular models. There is not much choice available to the Android tablet owner.

Contrast that with iPad accessories, which number in the thousands. Don't believe that? Go to Amazon and search for iPad accessories. That search returns no fewer than 62,065 currently, ranging from hundreds of cases to unusual items like kits to mount the iPad to virtually any surface imaginable. Sure there are some duplicates in those thousands of items, but most of them are unique products that work with the iPad.

Go to the Best Buy online store and while more limited you still see more of the same. There are a more reasonable 781 products in the online store, thoughtfully organized into types of accessories. These cover the range of expected accessories, like cases and cables.

What makes this accessory ecosystem so impressive is these thousands of products are custom-made for the iPad for the most part. The hundreds (or thousands) of cases available are all custom-fitted for the iPad and not generic products that "just fit". Companies churn them out because the installed customer base is big enough to generate a return on investment. That doesn't exist for Android tablets, thus the lack of choice.

The accessories for the iPad cover a wide range of uses, from the whimsical to the practical. Want a blood pressure monitor that connects to the iPad for tracking your health over time? Those are out there. Want a scale that turns your iPad into a big brother that watches your weight for you wirelessly? Those, too. Dream of using your iPad to fly a small helicopter around the office? There are several of those to choose from.

Accessories can maximize the usefulness of tablets in addition to help protect them. The wealth of options for the iPad ensure owners can always find what they need, something that just isn't true for the Android competition.

    I guess no Android fans have an answer for you on this one.

      What answer would you like? As far as accessories go, he's probably right. I don't use many on my Android tablet. Then again, I don't use many on my iPhone either. ;)

      I doubt this "phenomenon" has much to do with sales of the devices themselves though.

        @Badgered It does for me. I've been trying to decide between Nook, Fire and Tab and noticed that I just wasn't happy with the cases and accessories available for them. Just this weekend I've made the decision and I'm giving up on Android tablets.

        I'm now waiting for the iPad 3 to come out so that I can get the best price for an iPad2.

        Have you considered the price reduction for an Apple refurbished iPad? These tablets come with an Apple warranty and usually cost about 100 dollars less. For example, one tablet posted today was for an iPad 2 WiFi 32GB model for $499.00.

        Waiting for a good price reduction is one option but if you are going to wait that long (2 months? Grin), than consider purchasing the iPad 3. The hardware upgrades to that tablet should be worth the extra 100 dollars or so saved.

      • ROFL.. how foolish can James be?

        Android is being used to control Industrial systems.

        You want to play games.. use an iPad or iPhone.

        You want to do real work.. use Android.

        The reason why you can use one and not the other is multitasking. Android can keep services running in the background.. iPhone can't do so with out losing precious time in each clock cycle.

        @Badgered

        It is not a phenomenon, it is actually planned result of Apple's insistence to keep one form factor, one connector type etc. That pays off with time.
        What is more, manufacturers of all those gadgets, although happy to produce accessories for anything else, feel much more confident producing those for the iPad/iPhone/iPad Touch than anything else - because it will sell.

        Last year, walking the streets of Singapore, I was amazed to see well over 90% iThing accessories and iPhones/iPads etc sold at every corner. One would think that countries would be more into the "Android" things, but you could rarely ever see such devices. Not to speak of any accessories for them.

        The other favorite was Symbian Nokia phones and accessories for them.

        @Uralbas

        "Android is being used to control Industrial systems."

        Is this a bad joke? :)

      @johnsuarez10 Here's your answer...

      There are bluetooth controllers out there for the Android Tablets and they've worked on non-rooted tablets all along! Seriously, PS3 and Wii controllers both work on the Android Tablets and you're more likely to have these controllers so you don't have to spend $100 on an iCade!

      As for the Helicopters and such, you are aware they typically run on both Android and iOS right? Yeah, I guess that makes it tough to really claim these as an advantage!

      How about the Sound Bars... You realize that these sound bars are only able to control the default audio / video players on the iPod and iPhone right? Why is this a problem? Well, because Apple doesn't think you need to be able to control your own music on your iOS devices and completely shuts down the idea of using the EQ settings you built in iTunes! In short, I'll use the Headphone Jack on an Android Device with an integrated EQ before I use a speaker bar with the Stock iOS Music App!

      As for Blood Pressure Monitors, there are already Blood Pressure Monitors that are less than $100 with Blue-tooth and Apps for Android!

      Or maybe you meant the Wifi Baby Scale that works with Bluetooth on both Android and iOS!

      Seriously, the only thing you get extra with Apple is a proprietary connector!

        @Peter Perry
        Bluetooth and wireless only gives you a tiny fraction of the accessories and third party peripheral options that are available for the iOS universe making making the virtually complete lack of cases, docks, integration, accessories and third party peripherals a terribly large disadvantage of the Android world.

        See my comment below for more detail.

      Yes, we do have something to say about this stupid topic ...
      If James is that brain dead not to understand the differences between the ipad (as Apple's only tablet product) and the Android industry (many manufacturers of many different devices) then he needs to look for a different line of work ..(or find better topics to discuss ..)
      I am not going to explain the economic reason for companies (including 3rd party) not to produce accessory products for every different variant version of Android product, as it would be a waste of my time !!
      Yes .. maybe the manufacturer should at least supply the basics (covers/cases, docks ..etc), but that is up to them ...

      @johnsuarez10: Really? I was at a bar the other day with my Viewsonic in it's custom case. The IPad user wanted to know where I got the case because they couldn't find anything like it. Of course I also have my docking station where I have my full sized keyboard, direct network connection and HDMI output to my 55" TV. How does your IPad compare to that exactly?

      @johnsuarez10

      Just because you were first to comment doesn't make it a closed topic... I see many Android fans have since made comment and many have plenty of valid answers. I would like to add, however, that Apple accessories are numerous becasue Apple creates a market for Apple specific accessories by vendor lock in. Most android "accessories" won't be labeled as such since Android doesn't suffer from proprietary lock in. Bluetooth, wifi, mini stereo, hdmi, and mini usb all compliant with open standards make the Android compatible with thousands of "accessories" without having to pay something akin to the "Apple tax" that actually raises the production cost of Apple accessories or lowers the quality in order to maintain competitive price points.

      No Android will probably never have the multitude of "Android only" accessories that Apple has. This is not a disadvantage.

      @johnsuarez10 Who approves these stupid articles? Do writers on this site just write whatever they want? Where are the editors? Hello, anyone!

True Android tablet competitors to the iPad have only been out for one year. That tablet was the Xoom. You'll see the real growth of accessories for Android tablets this year. Which is the natural progression of adoption. Same thing happened with the iPad. You didn't have tons of accessories during the first year it was the second year that the majority of these accessories were introduced.

Which brings me back to why this article was written. The iPad form factor has been out much longer and hasn't changed which is why you have more accessories. What's the mystery? It's a changing market. Again, a year from now you'll have a lot more Android accessories. It's a non-issue.

    • I have an answer...

      @johnsuarez10 Article is simply not true. While there may be accessories in limited numbers, there definitely are Android tablet accessories out there, & way less expensive than those offered by the tablet makers themselves. Even the discontinued HP Touchpad had a ton of accessories for the short time it was on the market. Articles like this one are obviously written by Apple/iPad fanboys with nothing better to "report" on. I can't even believe I'm commenting here...

  • You should have seen CSE this year.

    For a company that does not participate in CES, there were shlls upon halls upon halls of iOS accessories. One thing I did notice different from last year is the iPad was used in slightly fewer kiosks this year. The iPad was still used by the vast majority but more companies were using alternate tablets. At least I did not see companies showing their tablets actually using iPads as their information kiosks this year.

        Care to post citations for this claim? Yeah, thought so. Certainly all the data I have seen indicates that there is a large gap between applications and accessories available on both platforms. Certainly I can give you a LONG list of items that are NOT available on both.
