Google+ shows explosive growth

By | September 27, 2011, 6:49am PDT

Summary: Google+ is growing faster than any other social network ever.

Ever notice how some people are a little, ah, delusional? For example, some folks were telling me recently how Google’s social network Google+ usage was going down and the site really wasn’t that popular. Seriously. Clearly these people have been under a rock, or perhaps too besotted with Facebook, to notice that since Google+ opened its doors to everyone, its growth has been nothing short of explosive. Indeed, Google+ made it to 50-million users faster than any other social network.

According to Paul Allen, founder of Ancestry.com, a leading genealogy site and Google+ unofficial statistician, “Google+ likely crossed the 50 million user mark. And since being opened to the general public (over age 18) last week, Google+ has been growing by at least 4% per day, meaning that around 2 million new users have been signing up each day.”

To be exact, it took Google+ 88 days to hit 50-million users. MySpace—remember them?–took 1,046 days. Facebook, with 1,096 days, took even longer.

Allen now finds it hard “to imagine a scenario where Google+ doesn’t end up with hundreds of millions of users. It’s just a matter of time.” I agree.

Besides liking Google+ for its own virtues, Allen points out that “By integrating +1 and Circles (targeted sharing) and other Google+ functionality into its Chrome browser, Android phones (and tablets), Gmail, Google Reader, Blogger, Google Photos, and other properties, Google+ will give its more than one billion users repeated chances to sign up for and use the functionality of Google+.”

It also doesn’t hurt Google+ any that Facebook can’t seem to stop tinkering with its interface and has less and less respect for its users’ privacy . Facebook is unquestionably the social network leader, but between Google+’s explosive growth and its own mis-steps, it may yet lose its throne.

This isn’t just Allen analysis by the way that shows Google+ experiencing explosive growth. According to Heather Dougherty, Director of Research at Hitwise, “Google+ emerged as the third largest site in the Social Network and Forums category last Wednesday, a day after the site went from “invitation-only” to “open access” available to everyone.”

Hitwise’s research showed “a massive spike in market share of visits for the site, with a 1269% growth from the week ending September 17th to the week of September 24th.” Thus, “In just one week, Google+ went from ranking as 54th most visited site in our Social Networking and Forums category to 8th place.”

If I were Mark Zuckerberg, I’d be worried. Very worried.

Those people who think that those who said positive things about G+ made themselves look delusional. Most conversations on G+ happened in private circles, so a data that shows G+ was declining is not telling the truth.

I wonder why ZDNet doesn't replace an article where they pay SJVN to write with one where Google pays them to publish. Both scenarios the message would be same.

Enough said.

Anyone notice the extreme irony of the first line? Or maybe it's hypocrisy. Most of SJVN's articles usually border on delusional as well.

My Thoughts exactly. Now I will go and read the article and probably find it is just another article with no facts or merit.

This "explosive growth" makes me want to get off of all social media - I would like to have one place where I can visit the scientists and thinkers without the marketers mucking up the joint. Please keep Google+ on the down-low will ya?

@sondrasneed : This is a concern. Right now, I don't see how Google makes anything off G+, so at some point they have to start accepting ads, and building linking services similar to those of Facebook in order to attract advertisers.

@suntips : Different people live in different information spaces. At the moment, I have connections to about 80% more people on G+ than I do on Facebook, and I find the quality of discourse on G+ to be higher. But, I'm not a promiscuous "friender" -- nobody has thousands of real friends.

There is room in the social networking space for both Facebook and Google+, and I look forward to competition between them improving both products (although Facebook's efforts since July seem to have made its user interface worse, not better).

@S_Deemer : Google doesn't need to advertise on G+, they use it for collecting information about their users, their likes, their dislikes, their friends, the places they visit etc.

They then use this information to target much more specific search results and ads to their users through their other services (search, gmail, etc).

This in turn, makes their ads much more profitable, and in a sense their users get more of what they want to see meaning they keep coming back (and reading those ads).

@Leans_To_Center

And FB (and other social sites) don't collect info on their users? Really?

These numbers mean nothing especially when comparing it to facebook and myspace. Those came out a few years prior when people were still skiddish about social media. Remember this is just the initial bump like any new product will get, then as time goes on those numbers will get less and less and then finally people will stop going to google+ because they don't want Google spying on them. Yes Google does spy and they have been caught. Also their EULA says anything you pass through their servers becomes their property. Screw that.

@LoverockDavidson_

Yes it took Facebook 3 years to hit 50 million because for at least the first couple it was limited to a handful of colleges and not open to the public. Once it went public it exploded.

Facebook wasn't promoted on the most visited webpage in the world nor pushed trough othe Google product channels.

The effort Google uses to push Google+ is worth hundreds of millions. Something that Facebook as a student startup never had.
@IE9

It is details like that SJVN will leave out to promote his FUD.

@LoverockDavidson_

And, of course, Facebook and MySpace don't spy on their users by collecting data to target ads, do they?

@LoverockDavidson_ Doesn't make them worse than Facebook, which has the exact same thing on THEIR EULA. That's social networking for you

Might be your friends are slow to adapt to better technology. You can even just look on line or in google+ and see the millions who were on facebook now there. i hate social networking but with as much security and privacy invasion as facebook has shown you have to be retarded to even have an account there. Google does track also but the security and the amount of detail logged is much much less meaning if your into social networking garabage google+ is the obvious pick although the best was still classic myspace when it was an online web page home and no tweeting or live walls that made idiot zombies out of kids and lower iq individuals who can not function in real life society and still think having 10000 facebook friends is like having real life friends when indeed its more like having invisible friends when you were 5 .

How about when FB went public. After all, G+ has only been open to the public for 7 days now. Before that it was very limited and by invitation only. Gmail went the same route, and now is a close third place behind HotMail (Live Mail) and Yahoo Mail which have both been around for at least a decade.

@benched42

How do you know that's what he meant? Clearly, he didn't mean since G+ has been fully open to the public, or he wouldn't have referenced G+ reaching 500 million users in the last 88 days -- not 7.

Google+ no doubt has shown great potential, but frankly right now it is not even close to Facebook. Number of users cannot be the only parameter to judge the success of a site especially a social networking site! A true measure is in fact the amount of time each of these users spend on the site after the join it. Simply creating a log in does not signify anything.

@hari2110

Facebook has been around since 2004. Google+ has been around for 7 days. I'd hope that G+ isn't close to FB. And, for the record, I find Google+ much easier to get what I want. FB, with their recent changes, only makes getting what I want more difficult.

@benched42 Have you bumped your head? 7 days?!?!? Google+ has been around for 4 months now - it went public 7 days ago... and FWIW I was on G+ since the third week in July and I have not been all that impressed with it.

Uh, if you have a gmail, joining google+ is almost automatic. I'm still a "member" of myspace, it doesn't mean I use it. A lot of people are signing up for G+, getting nothing out of it, and just not using it. I have noticed less and less new content on my G+ stream; and the hordes of weirdos that are randomly adding me isn't making me want to use it more. The only people I see active on G+ are social-media gurus, normal people are not interested.

Sure, lots of people are signing up, but I'd like to see stats on usage. Of my Google+ circles, there are basically only a handful of people posting. I think a lot of people feel almost obligated to sign up for an account, but would just rather everyone stick with facebook. That said, Google+ circles have finally gotten facebook to make some effort on lists. Competition is good. Also, Google is a leader. This feels more like they are chasing Facebook's taillights. I'd rather seem them innovate than copy (even with improvements).
