Mozilla is moving closer to the release of its first mobile Firefox browser.

The alpha 2 version of Fennec was made available on Dec. 22, one Mozilla developer announced.

The BBC, quoting a Firefox mobile developer, noted that Fennec is only day's away from release.

"We’ve made major strides improving startup performance, panning and zooming performance, and responsiveness while pages are loading," wrote one Mozilla Fennec developer, who announced the release of Alpha 2 on his blog. "In addition to the great performance work, we’re starting to work towards feature completion.  We’re making great progress on our Windows Mobile builds and are starting to roll on Symbian."

The mobile browser runs on Nokia's 810 Internet tablet and Nokia 900 smartphone, which run the Maemo Linux based operating system. Mozilla has also provided versions of Fennec for Windows, MacX and Linux desktops for developers.

Mozilla also plans to support Windows Mobile and Symbion mobile operating systems.

Fennec includes touch-screen support, a password manager, pop-up blocker and Firefox-style tab-browsing interface.

You DO realize that the blog entry you're referencing is a year old, yes?

The Windows Mobile release of Fennec is now up to Alpha 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/fennec/1.0a3-wm/releasenotes/) and has been for some time. The Maemo version is much further along, and is up to Beta 5 (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/fennec/1.0b5/releasenotes/).

I hope it's nothing like the previous versions on Windows Mobile. The Alphas are beasts that hog memory. Interestingly, I find that Opera Mobile 10 runs the best on Windows Mobile Phones. The cab and the java versions.

I hope Fennec turns out to be great.

  • Worth it only if better than opera.

Going by firefox's bloat and sluggishness on the desktop, someone would need to have a gun to my head to force me to run FF on the phone. I'd consider it if it's really slicker than opera on mobiles. What I'd really like to see is chromium/chrome for phones.

I am using Opera mini 5 beta 2 as well as Opera mobile 10 beta 2 on my Samsung i8910HD and the internet browsing experience are both miles ahead of the lame default webkit browser , bolt 1.6 and even Skyfire ! Don't know how fennec can even come close but we shall see
