One open source watcher has identified 10 rookie projects worth watching in 2011 – and roughly half are cloud related.
Some in Black Duck Software’s list are heavily promoted, such as Diaspora, while others, such as ownCloud, are lesser known.
At the top of the list (although no order is stated) is Diaspora, which is the open source social network.
ownCloud, which is the last on the informal list, is an open source personal cloud that runs on private servers.
It is but one of five cloud related projects on the list.
1. Second, there’s OpenStack, a well known project led by Rackspace and NASA that enables customers to build an open and reliable cloud infrastructure. The related OpenStack Nova – a cloud computing fabric controller said to be the core of an IaaS – is also on the list. Then Cloud9IDE – an IDE built on Node. JS – seeks to compile the best of top IDEs such as Eclipse, Netbeans, Textmate, and many others in one bundle of plug ins.

3. About 30 percent of the 10 rookie projects use the AGPL, further evidence of the heavy emphasis on cloud computing in this years’s list, Boston-based Black Duck reports.

5. Still, there are several other open source projects on the list that are focused on development, business applications and public safety.
NuGet, foir instance, is an open source package management system for the .NET platform that eases the process of incorporating third party libraries into a .NET application.
6. Activiti BPM is a business process management and workflow system that runs on any Java application, server or cluster in the cloud.
SparkleShare , another up-and-coming project, is a hot file sharing and collaboration project, while VoltDB, an alternative to NoSQL, is a speedy, open source OLTP SQL database.
The final project focuses on public safety. RapidFTR is a mobile application that allows aid workers to collect and share information about children during emergencies.
