Dell Streak is not the droid you are looking for

By | May 26, 2010, 5:28am PDT

Summary: Everything about this looks like a kludge. It’s like the thing was run up the flagpole to see if anyone would salute it.

The Dell Streak is not the Android device you are looking for. (Picture from Miramax.)

At 5 inches (13 cm.) across it is neither fish-nor-fowl. It’s only twice as wide as an iPhone, puny next to an iPad. It’s about the size and shape of a GPS device, without the cradle you would use to clip-on your dashboard.

Inside it’s running a 1 GHz chipset first seen on Netbooks. It could have been (probably should have been) a Windows box. The plan is to roll out 7 inch and 10 inch models in time, all running Google Android. At prices starting at $1,100, it’s no bargain.

Everything about this looks like a kludge. The marketing is a kludge, because they don’t know which of several markets they’re selling. The specs are a kludge, because if you’re rolling out the same chip set with different screen sizes why the bigger screen?

It’s like the thing was run up the flagpole to see if anyone would salute it.

Another point, having more to do with open source. The Android distro is designed for phones. It’s designed to compete with the iPhone, not the iPad. The still under-development Chromium system, based on Google Chrome, is designed to run the bigger stuff.

Dell seems to have jumped the gun on Chromium gear, fearing that will become the OS/2 to Android’s Windows. (For history buffs, the original Microsoft-IBM deal was that IBM’s operating system would run more powerful models. Microsoft just beefed up Windows and locked out IBM from below.)

But even if that is the case, Dell seems to be responding, and being driven by, technological change, not leading it. There is little indication it has a corporate strategy for the device, which would be pushed by its Perot Systems unit.

Dell’s position seems to be that of Hugh Fennyman’s character in Shakespeare in Love (played by Tom Wilkinson) — they pretend to be the muscle but in the end they’re the money, and as easily manipulated as any groundling in the pit.

That’s not the kind of strong position a corporate customer wants their vendor to be playing in. You want your vendor to be Romeo in the play, not the apothecary.

I know the headline carries a Star Wars reference, and I’ve gone off into Tom Stoppard’s recreation of 16th century London, but that’s just how vague a strategy Dell seems to have here. They don’t even know what millennium they’re playing at.

I doubt you could manage an x86 hardware configuration and keep the battery life respectable with a device like this, at least not yet. It would have to be ARM and therefore, no Windows.

The Dell Streak looks very similar to the Archos 5 Internet Tablet that runs Android (Disclaimer: I own one), which is a wicked little device (When its stable, it's being worked on!) and is way cheaper. It doesn't have 3G, hardware buttons (Home, Back), a camera, or the latest version of Android, but it does have a 'developer firmware', which lets you run whatever you choose to that runs on ARM processors.

I think Android, with a bit of love and some code could quite easily be a tablet OS. The phone functions would need to be optional, but with a great browser, it would do what the ChromeOS will supposedly do plus all the Android we know and (mostly) love.

Huh?
Yes it is bigger than the iPhone and smaller than the iPad, that's the point.
$1,100- this is the first I heard of a price on this
I also heard they were not using the same chip on different size screen, I thought they were using the Tegra 2 chips on the bigger screens.

@cosens84@... Then again, at twice the cost of a low end iPad, it runs Flash content. I thought that's what everyone wants?!

To be fair, it has a few more "advantages" over the iPad like USB support but at twice the cost? Forget the iPad, how will it ever compete against a good netbook design or even a new MacBook?
@kenosha7777

Clearly you misunderstood: the point that cosens84 is making is that no pricing information has been released for the Streak. In other words, neither we nor Dana know how much it will cost.
@kenosha7777 - this is the most hilarious thing about this whole Flash thing.. people are complaining about the lack of software that doesn't even exist.. was talked about being just around the corner coming up on 3 years ago now.

After being challenged by Steve Jobs almost 3 years ago, all Adobe could muster was, a few weeks ago to push out a buggie beta for android, that crashes every five minutes, displays video like a slide show and only works on a handfull of sites... that's really what you're looking for? this is a complete joke!

I'll repeat again.. Flash currently doesn't run an ANY platform almost 3 years after it was promised..

it's like saying come to my zoo.. i allow unicorns in my zoo unlike the zoo down the road.. lol.. and you're like YEAH!! i'm going to the unicorn zoo.. LMAO!!

The dimensions felt just right and I thought the 'slate' dimensions were one more step in the right direction.
The touchscreen is more user friendly for phoning and the camera education news and is superb. l

@Marcus_Marcus That is really a big question. Google's servers are the heart of Google's business. And it has long been a FEATURE, a FEATURE, not a LOOPHOLE, that one could privately modify the GPL code they use to run their business. Of course web applications are obviously SaaS. But where does one draw the line between those applications and the servers that host them? For example, take an insurance company running open source on their back end servers. At some point they decide to put a customer facing front end on those servers so that customers can access their accounts over the Net. Does that suddenly make that whole kaboodle Saas? If so, I am not sure I am comfortable with AGPL. In fact, I am not sure I am comfortable with this concept anyway since it undercuts one of the few provisions that make GPL software highly attractive to businesses that are not engaged in reselling the software itself. It really compromises the spirit of the GPL in some ways
Sorry Dana, but you no clear understanding of this device. Moreover, the iKool-Aid must be getting to you, because, as others point out, you?ve given us pseudo-facts ? the one I?ll point to is your size comparison: Streak length and width are only about a fifth more than the iPhone, as you can see for yourself at techpinas.com/2010/02/apple-ipad-vs-dell-mini-5-tablet-battle.html.

And I tend to agree with Dell?s estimation that the Streak?s form factor hits the sweet spot. It?s a truly convergent device that provides a great combination of functionality in a pocketable form factor. Indeed, I?d say that, of the potential iPad purchasers remaining out there, those who recognize these benefits over the iPad?s limitations will get a Streak instead ? the rest will confine themselves to a life of lugging around an additional device that still falls short of laptop functionality and makes no phone calls.

Here?s the crux of it:

The iPad?s over-size means that it has very good chance of being left behind on occasions when I?m not bringing a briefcase/bag; on these occasions I?d be stuck with the very limited (read ?no?) functionality my cell.

The Streak will replace my phone, which means I will ALWAYS have significant computing functionality with me ? bag or no bag ? and when I need more, I?ll be bringing the laptop anyway . . .

@J.M.S The Streak's form factor is fine. But if we assume Dana has updated pricing information, then the Dell Streak would need to be subsidized by a Telcom carrier to be competitive. If Dell sells this device as a stand alone product at the assumed price of $1,100.00 dollars, then it will fail in the market place.
@kenosha7777

If it were not for the fact that Dana's pricing information is highly suspect (his extremely dated source is not verifiable, and has been superceded by a slew of more recent articles that lament the absence of ANY pricing information), then your logic would no doubt stand . . .
@kenosha7777

It is, however, intersting/annoying that O2 have announced that they are making it available next week, but have provided no information beyond device specs.
@kenosha7777

Actually, here's a bit of news from the Carphone Warehouse: ". . . the Dell Streak will be available on a selection of both data-only and voice and data tariffs."

The iPhone screen size does not compensate for its cowpat dimensions. However the Streak screen size feels just right.
I was far more impressed by the Streak than by the iPhone.
The dimensions felt just right and I thought the 'slate' dimensions were one more step in the right direction.
The touchscreen is more user friendly for phoning and the camera is superb. I am definitely buying it.

$1100 is Bunk. They are selling the UK model on Ebay for $600-$700, and that's because they are hot and are running a premium. They will be $500-$550 in the states. I will own one as soon as the red one's are available.

I don't know who wrote this article, but it feels not really objective...

Dell Streak uses the last SnapDragon ARM V8 processor ! which is great & really fast !
Screen is big & beautifull... it is consider as a tablet, but it is a mix of everything: Tablet, phone, smartphone.... whatever... what you want ! it is an unique geek object !

The size is really correct (can be put in the pocket) but it has phone/3G/back & forward camera, android 2.1 upgrade.

It is actually the best android phone I tested (X10, Liquid, ect...) but with the advantage of a big screen !
I added lot of usefull widgets on 5 active desktop pages & it is still smooth ! lot of memory in it !

You can for sure, prefere an Iphone 4 with which you will not be able to phone :lol:, or prefere an Ipad which cannot be put in the pocket to be moved somewhere else !!!! :lol:

Or this unique object which will allow everything with a full powered system well implemented in high quality.

And the platform is really opened (Android, no need of ITunes, ...) & also supported & appreciated from developers community !
