Beta 5 offers big improvements over previous release including enhanced stability, performance and  web compatibility and user interface enhancements, including changes to the look-and-feel of Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OSX and Linux themes.

The updated beta also offers enhanced integration with Windows, Mac and Linux, including improved Windows icons and native user interface widgets , as well as a more native Mac OSX look and feel with support for OSX widgets, a combined back and forth button and growl notifications support. On the Linux side, Firefox default icons and menus use the native GTK themse.

In personalization capabilities, the Place organizer allows users to view, organize and search all bookmarks, tags and browing history with multiple views and smart folders to store frequent searches, and create restore and backups at will.

In terms of peformance, the enhanced JavaScript engine and profile guided optimizations have yielded significant performance improvements. Mozilla.org claimed that applications such as Google mail and Zoho Office run twice as fats on Firefox 3 beta 5 as compared to Firefox 2 .

So far I am highly impressed, the load time is finally acceptable. Now all we need is the authors of the extensions to update them. Well done!!

  • Firefox 3 twice as fat as 2?

Heheh.. nitpicking here but "Mozilla.org claimed that applications such as Google mail and Zoho Office run twice as fats on Firefox 3 beta 5 as compared to Firefox 2 ."

    • "Fat" is correct...

...when it chews up 300MB of RAM with 5 tabs open on OS X and stays that way when they are closed. Say we got a bit of a LEAK!?

Well this reply is actually being done through FF 3 Beta 5. Totally different experience things are once again "poping" up like back in FF 1 days. Now I'm waiting for the Standards to pass acid3.... OK lets not throw rocks.... Standards, if we can agree on them, will reduce web site code arounds for quirky browsers and improve site speeds.

It sure is faster than FF2, but then most of my Addons (10) don't work, either, which could account for the faster loading. I haven't checked them all yet,..maybe they won't be needed?
FF 2.0.0.11 thru 13 crashed regularly.. This Beta hasn't crashed once, yet. A gr8 start. Bring on RC1 in 4 days.

I have tried both IE 8 beta and Firefox 3 Beta 5. I saw that IE-8 is much faster than firefox 3.5. Also Firefox is very slow in java applications.. https sites. Only improvement in total outlook. No increased speed.

    • IE8, fast?

Go to www.webdevout.net with IE 8. Cry. About Java apps... Considering that Java applications run inside Sun Java's plugin, if you find said plugin to be slower under Firefox than under IE, it's probavly because Sun's plugin is les optimized for Firefox than it is for IE.
Long story short, you're blaming the wrong ones for possible slowdowns, and not citing what else you call 'faster' under IE 8.

Yes, IE8 beta 1 crashes faster than Firefox 3 beta 5. On the other hand, what Microsoft calls 'beta' is what the Mozilla Foundation calls 'pre-alpha developer preview'. (IE8 'RC' means Firefox 'late alpha', IE8 'RTM' means Firefox 'early beta')

Have been using Fx3B5 since it came out and am delighted with it. Have found it to be faster and more stable than Fx2 plus the new functionality esp. the bookmarks, enhanced addons & combined back/forwards button is very handy. I like the cleaner UI too.
The famed 'memory leaks' which has 'plagued' Firefox was never an issue for me even in earlier versions of Fx and I haven't seen any problems here either.
