GNOME has the help wanted sign out

Summary: GNOME needs to find itself an entrepreneur, and set a direction pretty quickly, or it's going to be run over from behind.

Stormy Peters is leaving her position with GNOME to take a developer relations job with Mozilla.

Good for her. Bad for GNOME.

Mozilla is a well-established organization, whose software and funding are both on solid ground. GNOME, on the other hand, is at a crossroads.

Losing Canonical was a big deal. Negative reviews of the shell are hurting desktop Linux generally. A firm hand and definite direction are needed. This can go pear-shaped pretty quickly.

In my view Peters, who joined the GNOME payroll in 2008, found herself in a horses-for-courses dilemma.

There are managers who are good at charming corporations into giving their money, their time, and their imagination to a cause. There are teammates who are just good with people, peer-to-peer. Peters is of the latter school. GNOME needs someone from the former.

My former co-blogger Joe Brockmeier, writing this up at Network World, is deliberately cagey. As he notes at the bottom of his story, he's a member of the GNOME Foundation and sometimes helps the group with their PR. Which means he probably has views on this he can't say out loud, and which should be reserved for the ears of his fellow wizards.

I'm not a wizard, a point I intend to emphasize when I talk to the Apache Foundation tomorrow. My view is GNOME needs to find itself an entrepreneur, and set a direction pretty quickly, or it's going to be run over from behind.

But that's just one blogger's perspective. What's yours?

  • Hey, maybe Gnome will adopt the Unity interface if it is popular. Just like

    Mozilla switching to Firefox.

There is the thought that Canonical wants to copyright Unity as there own brand. That does not go well with Gnome.

      • Well, as with Ice Weasel, they can have their own brand as well.

But, it would be nice if Ubuntu let Gnome use the name if they wanted to.

@DonnieBoy Those kinds of questions are not within her jurisdiction as head of developer relations.

  • Also, Ubuntu did not abandon Gnome. They still use all of the Gnome

components with Unity. They just want to have control over the Window manager and how the user interacts with the system.

I would not be surprised if you see someone from the Red Hat or the Fedora projects come in.

Red Hat has supported and used Gnome since it was beta some time around 1998. I believe Red Hat provides 91% support for the Gnome Project.
(When I say someone from Fedora, they likely work for Red Hat)

Maybe even Novell which provides support and used in the OpenSuse project.

    Get out the crystal ball.

    Hooay!

  • Hasn't it got a direction then?

I've heard rumours of a forthcoming Gnome 3, don't know how good it will be though? The requirement is quite simple: Be The Best. Popularity is based on merit - no PR machine necessary (in fact PR machines sometimes do harm).

  • I'm confused.

I used to use KDE. Now, I use gnome. I love it, and have no issues with it. Or am I just too obtuse to notice its flaws?

Simply duplicate Windows 7 down to the smallest detail (although you won't have much luck on the functionality) If you can convince enough users that they'll be able to use Linux without pain, you then just have to deal with the lack of applications.

    Hmmmm, I think I understand .86% usage. ;-)

Gnome will be just fine, it just works.

  • Look alikes

Is it just me or Stormy Peters and Paula Rooney do look (somewhat) alike?
At least in this picture of Stormy and the picture of Paula at the top of the page.
Talk about an off topic comment! :)

"Mozilla is a well-established organization, whose software and funding are both on solid ground."

Actually, Mozilla is far too dependent on Google for their revenues. They need to diversify income sources.

@jorjitop At least they have revenues.

Bad for GNOME. Good for Mozilla. Good luck.

I love gnome and I hope it doesn't go anywhere. Hopefully people will just adopt a gnome flavored ubuntu in the future instead of the unity one that they will be using.

@Jimster480 GNOME isn't going anywhere, think of this as a wakeup call and hope they get up to a higher gear so that 3.0 is released. Frankly they will need to make it more user friendly then Unity so that Ubuntu will have to have GNOME as another install option in future releases.
