Linux's 20th Birthday Party: LinuxCon

Has it really been twenty years? Yes, yes, it has been twenty years since Linus Torvalds announced that he was working on "a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." Twenty years of Linux later, The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating Linux's growth, has announced the program for this year's LinuxCon North America taking place in Vancouver, B.C. August 17-19, 2011.

According to the Foundation, LinuxCon North America will host the formal celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Linux. Torvalds, himself, who seldom goes out to shows anymore, will be attending and will participate in an interview-style keynote in which he will discuss technical advancements and challenges related to the Linux kernel with kernel developer and maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman.

The convention will also feature a "20 Years of Linux" panel that will include Linux and open source luminaries Jon "maddog" Hall, Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) veteran and advocate, and Eben Moglen, the Software Freedom Law Center founder. The Linux Foundation's Executive Director Jim Zemlin will moderate the exclusive panel.

Also confirmed for the final program is a keynote from Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger, Chairman Emeritus of the IBM Academy of Technology and Visiting Professor of Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While at IBM, Dr. Wladawsky-Berger was largely responsible for IBM's early commitment to Linux.

Additional LinuxCon keynote speakers will include Jim Whitehurst, Red Hat's CEO; Marten Mickos, Eucalyptus Systems' CEO; and Ubuntu's Technical Architect Allison Randal.

There will also be a 20th anniversary of Linux party and dance--yes, penguins can dance--with a roaring 20s theme. The winners of this year's Linux Foundation Video and t-shirt design contests will also be featured at the show.

On a more serious note, there will be multiple on-site Linux training opportunities for LinuxCon attendees. There will also be multiple sessions on Linux and open-source related technologies. I'll also be speaking at the show on a panel about Linux reporting.

Pre-registrationi for LinuxCon is $500 until July 8th and $600 thereafter. Student registration is $100. LinuxCon has also sold out so if you plan on attending I highly recommend pre-registering.

      @bitrate A Linux Con job? I can't see how this is possible, since confidence tricksters are in business to trick people out of their money. Since Linux is free, it doesn't cost money, and people can use it if they choose to, or ignore it if they'd prefer to buy or download a different OS.

      I know there are packaged Linux distributions, but the OS is also downloadable free, so buying it is again a personal choice.

        @colinmeister <br>That is the most moronic, stupid, idiotic argument I've ever heard, yet the Linux crowd just can't get away from it.<br><br>The Cost of the software is about on one-hundredth of the cost of Operating the System. People cost dearly, and good techies are hard to find. The cost difference in Windows Servers and Linux Servers is negligible. (Done the studies, not much difference if any, except you have to hire Linux types that can't talk to other humans)<br><br>By the way, you ever tried to just download an enterprise server version, install and make it work without a support contract? Good luck in proper optimization without the right knowledge that only the vendor can supply.<br><br>Good luck if the "Free" lie is the only argument you've got. The Linux con is the "Free" argument that is pure bull.<br><br>At least use an argument that holds water, like Linux is faster, more reliable, or something else, but "Free" no, that is just stupid.
