The Ubuntu community has introduced a namesake open source font.

In his blog Tuesday, Ubuntu creator and lead developer Mark Shuttleworth announced the publishing of the first source code for Ubuntu — the font — and revealed plans for an entire open source font family.

“We’d build a complete family: various weights, variable-width and mono, across some of the key language groups of our community,” he wrote. “We knew we couldn’t do everything but we figured we could establish a core upon which everything could be done. We’d fully hint and kern the work, too, so it’s good enough to be a default interface font for something we all use all day long. A huge project, one that will take some time to finish. But today we’re publishing the first source for Ubuntu, the font, a milestone worth celebrating.

Here it is:

Others have made attempts at establishing open source font collections, notably the Open Font Library (OFL).

Shuttleworth said it will take some time to hammer out licensing issues. He and others in the community are working with font designers and typographers on a common font license but no solution has been reached.

A key open question, of course, was licensing. There are two obvious candidates, among quite a large field: the OFL, from SIL, and the GPLv3 with a font-specific clause added. Digging into this in more detail turned up a tricky situation: both approaches have issues which precluded us from adopting them immediately,” Shuttleworth noted.

“So we came to the compromise of an interim license, which you can find atbzr branch lp:ubuntu-font-licence While licence proliferation sucks, I’m optimistic we’ll converge in due course.”

@ssj6akshat I guess whoever oversees this collection will get the benefit of some intellectual stimulus (maybe ideas they can copy). I wonder what they'll be like if or when they think that an idea within one of the projects may infringe a company patent? Will they accept it and stay silent, or point out the problem right away? Time will tell, but I can't help feeling that Microsoft are on probation, and I'd steer clear. fesbook

I am running 10.10 on my Netbook and Ubuntu font is nice

Clean and as good as Microsoft's True Type Tahoma.
I was previously using ttf-droid and find Ubuntu font just as nice.

@Dietrich T. Schmitz, Your Linux Advocate

you were stealing Microsofts fonts?

No, they are not free even though they have been downloadable from the 'net. Microsoft paid good money to font developers and only received license for MS operating systems.

Good to see the freetards finally starting to own up. But maybe they should fix sound and wireless before pimping their excuse for a desktop OS?

He said it was as good as Tahoma, not that he was using Tahoma on Ubuntu. In fact he points out that he was previously using ttf-droid.

Calling other people 'freetards' while demonstrating an inability to comprehend a short post, or even the history of the subject the post is about is of the upmost irony.

It's also equally interesting that you're unaware that the Microsoft fonts that the web is primarily designed around were propogated _by_ Microsoft for use by anyone on any platform for 'free', see the 'core fonts for the web' program for details.

Keep drinking the coolaid.

Really, if OSS were stealing the fonts then M$ would have sued by now so I guess you don't know what you are talking about.

@honeymonster Apparently, even Microsoft doesn't share your faith in the Courier; because they killed it off.

To say that "lots" of people would buy it simply because you read a bunch of Internet posts is a ridiculous statement. You don't have any data on price, specs, carrier...you're just dreaming up some vaporware that never exisited and never will. araba oyunlari friv

Obviously you've never taken a look at Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 . Go check it out at http://www.ubuntu.com/. They're positively gorgeous and right up there with Mac OSX or Windows7

No, no they aren't. Ubuntu is known for its poop smeared themes, and until 10.04 came out they decided to go with a purple barney theme which is equally as bad.

Ubuntu Buys the rights.. Wish all would do that.

Dont worry about him. He shows up, says it did not follow the rules. Ask what rules and you get no answer.

Nice that Ubuntu bought the rights to the work. For once a company buys the rights with out stealing it. Innovation.

He's mad that his office put in a new phone PBX that uses Linux. He wanted a MS PBX but was told cost too much.

Hey Love I was off topic there for a little bit, Im sorry.
The topic is about Ubuntu and fonts.

Ubuntu, Once again Open Source just keeps on

I like that poopy background, I think I'm going to put it on my Windows PC.

Mr. Windows?s expert:

If I install a Windows weekly bug fix (patch/update).
I then restore to a previous point before the bug fix is the patch still there????

Its off topic, all your posts are off topic. I am asking the Windows expert.

You should check out that open source project ReactOS, Sponsored by MS. O bye the way it looks like Windows NT......

@Linux Rocks

But I can answer your questions:
Windows backup can back up both system and user data as well as a full (and incremental) image.

If you restore individual files or directories patches will remain.

If you restore the entire system by recreating a harddisk image to a point-in-time, obviously the changes/patches will be gone.

If you restore system state to a previous version, changes/patches will be rolled back. That's kinda the idea.

If you restore previous versions of files or folders, system changes will be unaffected.

ReactOS is an impressive feat, if a little pathetic. Just like that other Windows wannabe OS.

@Linux Rocks - ReactOS ... seriously? Tell me you're kidding.

From the ReactOS homepage:
"Long-term plan
N/A at the moment. "

ReactOS is a toy and is nowhere even close to being anything real that anyone can run. And unless the OSS community starts getting behind it and actually contributing SIGNIFICANT effort, it'll remain a pipe-dream.
Twink. The only time you show your face on zdnet is when it has something to do with Linux. Is making your stupid remarks about Linux the only way you can get your ROCKS off?

Honey,
Sorry I didnt get to see your answer, I was on my office PBX system that runs Linux. I was working on an issue with Windows Vista, might have been Windows 7 look the same to me.

I asked that same question to 4 outsourced MS techs and not one of them knew, could not find the answer, and could not point to a page on the internet. Hey MS does have a web site you know.

How do you feel about MS outsourcing tech support to another country?

Back on topic: Ubuntu bought the rights to the work and can do what ever they want with it. I can not say the same thing with Internet Exployer.

Sorry if there are any typos in the writing of this post,
I?m using my daughters MS 7 laptop with Word, My daughter is using my Linux laptop. My daughter seems to not want to use her MS laptop allot.
Hey my son is not using his MS 7 laptop, he is using his friends Mac.

MS Word suggests I change linux to Linux, Word recognizes Linux.

As Mr. B says can?t be everything to everyone, he was talking about MS.
Good job Ubuntu

An obviously fabricated post

you should at least attempt to make your stories a little less transparent, as it reads as fabricated for no other reason then to "troll" as you humans would say.

@Mister Spock
Everything that I wrote is fact. What is fabricated?

I do not see a troll in any thing I wrote. There is Windows, there is Mac and there is Linux. Everyone of those OS's has a purpose. None are going away any time soon, regardless of what gets posted.
I support all three, each day every day. Its called customer support.

Sorry a customer is calling from Asia, I need to go.

Sorry Mr. Spock, Asia: its an area that has Japan, South Korea, China and several other countries in it.

are Ubuntu fans. Typographically, it's uses are extremely limited. It would be horrible to read body copy set in this font. The Bitstream Vera and the DejaVu families are existing solutions that, for day to day use, are considerably better. This font is just a vanity release in all reality.
