AMD Shanghai won't get HyperTransport 3

Summary: HyperTransport 3 which was once slated for AMD's Barcelona server processors seem to be delayed again on Shanghai until some time in 2009 when it finally arrives for the "Montreal" quad- and octal-core CPUs.  According to page 21 of Mario Rivas' slides, the roadmap clearly indicates AMD's first 45nm processor Shanghai won't get the newer inter-processor interconnect and it will instead use the older HyperTransport 1 interconnects.

HyperTransport 3 which was once slated for AMD's Barcelona server processors seem to be delayed again on Shanghai until some time in 2009 when it finally arrives for the "Montreal" quad- and octal-core CPUs.  According to page 21 of Mario Rivas' slides, the roadmap clearly indicates AMD's first 45nm processor Shanghai won't get the newer inter-processor interconnect and it will instead use the older HyperTransport 1 interconnects.

AMD's desktop variant of the Barcelona processor called "Phenom" already has HyperTransport 3 when you use motherboards with AMD's 770 and 790 chipset and the AM2+ socket.  But ironically, the multi-socket servers which really need the higher interconnect transport speeds won't get HypertTranport 3 for another two generations of server processors.

  • Well that is a bummer

This issue should have been resolved for the QuadFX line for when it went Phenom.

However, with the current workings of AMD, disappointment is no longer surprising. The fact that the Triple Cores shipped on time is probably more of a surprise than any thing.

HT3 isn't simply a bandwidth increase from HT1. They added power-management and bandwidth-splitting features to it, which is why it showed up on desktops and laptops first rather than servers. The speed increase is the least important feature of HT3, as AMD had been steadily increasing frequencies on HT1 right from the beginning anyways.

Did the leaked numbers showing SPEC projections for Nehalem over Barcelona and Shanghai assume HT3?

As a long time AMD user, i would prefer for them to take a bit longer and get things right so as to be again competetive with Intel
