One of the most hated things on the Personal Computer is Crapware. It slows your PC down to a crawl, often causes instability and crashes, eats up valuable screen real-estate, and may even border on Malware. I started on this topic a few months ago with a partial solution but it wasn’t the total solution that really scrubbed the computer clean. This time I’m going to show you thoroughly scrub a PC of Crapware but first I’m going to give a few definitions.

Definition of Crapware:
Crapware is software that you don’t want on your computer. Not everyone will agree on what is and what isn’t Crapware because a piece of software that one person wants might be something that another person doesn’t. Some software will fall in the grey area where people need - or they think they need - certain features of the software but it causes them grief by causing system slowdown or instability. Although we can technically define Malware, Spyware, or Adware as Crapware because it’s software that people definitely don’t want, those three typically get put in to the category of Malware.

Examples of Crapware:
Crapware might come in the form of a bloated driver CD that installs additional junk on top of the required driver. It might be software that came with a router, printer, or broadband service that the typical user unwittingly installs or it’s the stuff that came pre-installed on the PC you purchased. Often times you try to install something to play a simple video and it installs a massive music library manager or you install a piece of software and you get an extra toolbar added to your web browser even though you had never asked for it.

At the end of the day it’s companies trying to fight each other for every inch of your screen real-estate, monetize every search and every click, and capture every glance you make which turns your computer in to a messy battleground. What every user wants to know is how do you get rid of their crap and take back your PC. The following techniques aren’t guaranteed to get rid of every piece of Crapware on your Windows (2000, XP, or Vista) computer but it is one of the most thorough method available that a modestly computer literate person should be able to follow. The two free tools you will need to download are:

One thing worth noting
nmh 18th Jun 2007
CCleaner does a better job with the uninstall programs section than the Windows Add/Remove Programs.

I have seen occurences of items not being listed in the Add/Remove Programs page and yet have been successfully uninstalled by CCleaner.

CCleaner also gives you more options to repair/remove broken uninstall entries.

I guess that was two things really.

If you want iTunes (I do) you don't have the option of not installing Quickietime. Any time you simply upgrade simply iTunes (which is pretty %$+@#& often), you also upgrade Quickietime, and you also re-add Quickietime to your autostarting Crapware. If there's a way to NOT install Quickietime with every iTunes (re-)install, please post it.

I have found a free solution to getting rid of QuickTime and Real Player!

It's called "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack". Before I installed this free program, often I ran across the situation where I could not play a particular multimedia file because I did not have the proper codec installed. Ever since installing K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, I have not seen that error message!

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is available here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm

If you read the print on Apple's site, you'll find that Quicktime is REQUIRED in order to use iTunes. Much like Windows is required to run MS Office . . .the Quicktime engine is how iTunes plays audio and video . . .

Solution: Don't install iTunes.

top100developers 27th Dec 2007
Anytime you want to convert a file to mp4 quicktime is a requirement to load. I found this out after purchasing a Sony PSP and converting videos for it. Quicktime SHOULD NOT be a required install just to convert a video format to a new codec.

I am a firm beleiver in less is more and with any computer; windows, mac, unix; the more software that is not loaded when it is not required speeds up the computer. It's a simple law; the more you load on a computer the slower it will respond. No one ever said, "My game was running too slow so I loaded five new programs to speed it up"

Use X-Lite Mega pack to avoid installing QT and iTunes or Real Player. Real Player is the most horrible application I've ever seen in the way it takes over your default players and refuses to give up.
Based on the numbers I would assume at least one PC users owns an iPod..heh heh

That's one thing that keeps me away from iPods or any MP3 player that requires me to install special software. My MP3 player allows me to drag and drop files to the unit.
a very limited "entertainment" goal. In other words Apple is looking to go
somewhere other than just an MP3 player with a limited future but to Apple the sky is
very well the possible limit.....You can't reach for the stars with a step ladder after
all....:P

Being forced to use iTunes is why I will not use an iPod...there are too many "just as good" players that cost less and I can use any software to manage it, and is faster than iTunes.

So nobody uses Windows Media Player, Winamp, Foobar2000, CorePlayer, BSPlayer, Media Player Classic, Songbird, VLC?

Winamp supports the iPod don't you know, as does Amarok on Linux and BTW IMHO Amarok is the best damned audio player out there on any platform. Bar none. Including iTunes, which I personally hate along with Quicktime, but then again I'm a computer user as opposed to an iWorshipper so what would I know?

If it's not an iPod, then "EVERYONE WILL LAUGH AT ME AND I WILL HAVE A HORRIBLE FUTURE AND BE SCARRED FOR LIFE BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T BUY ME AN IPOD!!!"

are teenage boys like this? I don't remember being like that . . .
If you can't say no to your daughter, you have other issues. I have a daughter that's 6 now and I don't put up with this. I have friends and family members that insist on shopping at Macy's or other trendy stores and they raised their children to be brand aware. I?ve seen 6 year olds demand name brand clothing. I don't put up with this and I put her in the cheapest clothing brand. Making friends shouldn't be contingent of how much cool stuff you have or wear. If that?s what it takes to make friends, then those aren?t the kinds of friends you want.

I agree with georgeou. I have 3 daughters - 23, 19, and 15. The only one of my kids to have an ipod is my oldest, because she bought it herself when she was 21. The 19 yr. old bought her own mp3 player and realized that she could pay much less for a different brand. And we just this spring bought the 15 year old a small off-brand mp3 player. Funny, but they have had no problem with friends making fun of them. Sounds like you and your daughter need to get your priorities straight. Who said it was a right for a teenager to have ANY kind of mp3 player? The world just might come to an end if we denied our kids anything...
I'll bet you bought her a cell phone too before there was ever any good reason for her to even have one, such as driving long distances, etc.

Right on bro, but anyway, I actually do have quicktime and realplayer installed for those little bits I find that require them, but they don't actually cause me or my system any harm. Realplayer however, wants to add itself to my startup after I have to use it but I just say no. I do use a video and audio player called GOM. I don't know or care who makes it but it works just fine for me. http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html
I have been using for a few months now, tells me when there is a new update and everything. Before that I used wmp, it also did a good job until version 11. Now I don't care for it. My problem with the new wmp is really only a functionality thing. I just don't care for the way it lists my music and videos. But it plays them just fine. I also use a video player called cyberlink for my dvds. Anyway, all I am trying to put forth is that there are a lot of choices, both free and payed for that we can enjoy, but I do understand some of the other's frustration over crap like Itunes and such, I won't have any of them, give me an mp3 player and away I go.

Winamp's native support is good as well but I can't vouch for it. I use the ml_ipod plugin and I just realized there's a new update for it..

QTAlternative use to be bundled with K-Lite Mega Codec pack but is no longer. Now you have to get this seperately. Let's you play Apple QuickTime without having their player. It's also less bloated.

QuickTime is the most annoying crapware? That's ironic, considering that Mac users
don't have to go through all these silly routines to get rid of crapware since our
computers just don't come with any.

I can understand why PC users would be crabby. Personally, I have felt much calmer
all around since I made the switch to Macs in 2001, after fifteen years using and
building PCs.

QuickTime/iTunes are to the Mac what Windows Media Player is to Windows - the default player.

Also, the crapware isn't put on there by Microsoft, but by the OEM vendors (Dell, eMachines, Time et al) as there are no OEMs in the Mac world - only Apple build Macs - there's no crapware.

Many people install crapware because they do not pay attention and read everything that comes up n the screen during install.
Toolbars are installed this way hopeing the user will just hit enter without reading.
