Android tablet on the cheap: Acer Iconia A500 is the XOOM "Light"

By | April 8, 2011, 2:44pm PDT

Summary: Acer’s Iconia A500 tablet features the same exact hardware specifications as Motorola’s XOOM, but with half the flash storage and $150 cheaper.

Acer’s Iconia A500 tablet features the same exact hardware specifications as Motorola’s XOOM, but with half the flash storage and $150 cheaper.

Back in early March, I proposed that Motorola create a new SKU for their XOOM tablet with a slightly reduced feature set, which I tentatively called the “XOOM Light”.

If you don’t remember the piece, here’s the crux of the argument:

If iSuppli’s BOM is to be believed to be within striking range of actual component costs, then Motorola can shave anywhere between 50 and 60 dollars off their manufacturing cost on the XOOM by slicing the flash storage in half to 16GB and going with less expensive camera parts, putting it closer on par with Apple’s iPad 2. This would allow the XOOM to retail for about $50-$80 less than the entry-level iPad 2, depending on how close the company wants to cut their margins.

The only way XOOM is going to be a repeat hit for Motorola Mobility in the same way the Droid was for their handset business is to undercut the iPad 2 on price. With a lower price and a similar feature set to the iPad 2, a large segment of consumers might be willing to overlook some of the shortcomings on Android 3’s current tablet app gap.

While this plea seems to be falling on deaf ears at Motorola, apparently this idea resonated with one of its competitors, the Taiwanese-based PC giant Acer, Inc.

Today the company along with channel partner Best Buy announced pre-orders for its Android 3-based iPad competitor, the Iconia A500, which has nearly identical specifications to the Wi-Fi only version of the Motorola XOOM.

See: Motorola XOOM Specifications

See: Acer Iconia A500 Specifications

The only significant difference? 16GB of flash memory instead of 32GB which lines up with the entry-level Wi-Fi iPad quite nicely. At $450.00, the 10.1″ tablet device costs $50 less than the entry-level iPad 2, and is $140-$150 less than the XOOM.

It seems that Acer didn’t even need to sacrifice the camera capabilities to make up for component costs on the BOM in order to compete with the iPad 2. It also has identically-specced 2MP front-facing and 5MP, LED flash rear-facing cameras as the XOOM.

In addition to identical SoC and PoP, memory, RAM, GPU, screen, cameras and ports, the device is also the same thickness of the XOOM, at 12.9mm, roughly half an inch.

Note to all Android and other would-be tablet manufacturers: The bar for 10.1″ full size, 16GB devices that are not carrier locked has now been lowered to $450.00. That means anything in the tablet market that is not Apple needs to cost this much or less, with similar specifications.

Oh and HP, regarding your WebOS 3 TouchPad, I’m also talking to you.

Today I pre-ordered one of the Iconia A500 devices, sight unseen. If it’s anywhere near as good a device as the XOOM as far as build quality is concerned, I’m willing to put up with some of the current shortcomings in Android 3 in order to keep a test Honeycomb device in house.

I’m not advocating that most consumers look at this device in lieu of the superior application ecosystem on the iPad 2, but this price point was enough for me to take action to meet my immediate requirements. For the same reason, Android developers will probably jump at the opportunity to buy one of these devices as well.

The question now remains of how Android 3 devices can actually differentiate at the $450.00 price point, and if it’s even possible to lower that price bar any further. I think the price bar can be lowered, but there’s only one company who I believe can accomplish this: Amazon.

As I mentioned in my November 2010 piece “Kindle’s Secret Sibling: Amazon’s Android Tablet” it is my belief that the online retailer and bookseller has a definitive plan to release such a device.

What the exact specs for this device are is left to the imagination and may be pure speculation, but certainly if you eliminate the need for Google licensing of the Android OS and the Android Market along with Google’s apps, replacing them with Amazon monetizing equivalents, the price of a similarly-specced tablet could easily be reduced another $50-$80.

An Amazon Android tablet using the Open Source, unlicensed version of Honeycomb, combined with Amazon Appstore for Android,  Kindle for Android, the Amazon MP3 service as well as Amazon Video and Amazon Cloud Player makes for a near-complete tablet OS and application stack, which would allow the company to monetize their properties on the device and take the “Give away the razor but sell the blades” approach.

All of this is dependent, of course, on Google actually releasing the source code to Honeycomb outside of their approved vendors list, a delay which currently has the Open Source community absolutely livid.

The only thing that would actually be missing from such a theoretical device is a native Android mail client to talk to GMail, Hotmail and other services including corporate Exchange email, along with the appropriate calendar sync services, mapping and integrated search engine apps.

Presumably the missing pieces could be coded in-house by Amazon, or purchased/licensed from a 3rd-party. I could certainly see Amazon partnering with someone like Microsoft to provide Bing search and mapping in lieu of Google, as well as a full license of Activesync and native Exchange client.

Whatever the outcome, it’s clear that Acer has just brought prices for iPad 2 competitors down to much more realistic and acceptable levels. Whether it will plunge any further in the immediate future remains to be seen.

Has Acer re-defined the pricing for the full-sized Android tablet space? Talk Back and Let Me Know.

I think Acer really did a good job at bringing Honeycomb entry level tablet under $499. Too bad Motorola really never learnt anything from its mistakes.
What a bucket of bolts. Big FAIL.

As much as I like Amazon, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell I'm purchasing a tablet without the Android Market. Amazon Appstore forces you into 1-click purchase even if it's disabled on your account. Just the idea of inadvertently purchasing a bunch of apps with fat fingers or worse losing the tablet is enough to keep the Amazon appstore off my phone. Even if Amazon only enables 1-click only if you chose to use it, it's okay as a secondary market. But not the primary market.

The whole Android experience is based on seamless integration with the cloud (where Amazon is strong as well), and most importantly with Google apps. If Amazon ships without the Google apps, they will sell as many tablets as Verizon is selling Android phones with Bing.

In general, *ALL* tablets are overpriced for what they offer. The iPad is overpriced at $500. Tablets are going to take off only if they are around the $250-$300 price point. Otherwise a netbook is a much better device at $200 and a laptop is much better at a $500 price. A slightly beefed up Nook Color running Honeycomb+ at $300 will be the tablet to beat. I already know three people who put their iPads on e-bay and are now happily using the Nook Color running CyanogenMod 7. I have sold my iPad. But I still haven't found the right Android tablet. I'm still holding out for Notion Ink's Adam to be more widely available.

@os2baba It's difficult to take you seriously when you claim that "tablets will take off when..." and tell us that netbooks are a better deal. That's because Apple alone will sell more iPads this year than all netbook vendors combined sold in the best year netbooks ever had.

Tablets are taking off just fine, with or without your approval. The problem for Android vendors is that the only tablet that's taking off is Apple's. If this new Acer model does no better than the XOOM, reasonable people will start to wonder whether Android will ever make it as a tablet OS.

"Reasonable people"......

@Robert Hahn

wait until the tablet OS is officially released and hardware has been on the market for a considerable length of time before engaging in totally pointless "wishful thinking" speculation. You probably uttered similar nonsense when the Android phones first came out.

Fan boys are NOT "reasonable people" - by definition.
@Robert Hahn "Fan boys are NOT "reasonable people" - by definition." ROFLMAO!!! Yup.
@os2baba

What exactly will be missed about Google's Marketplace, maleware? Developers and users alike have been complaining about Android's wild wild west store for a while now and would welcome a more integrated polish approach, like Amazon's Appstore. I think we will start to see it taking off really fast for this very reason. Not too sure Google's Marketplace will be missed when you can get the same popular apps on Amazon (together with music, books, Audiobooks, movies, and cloud services), all tied into your one amazon account.

The Google Market may not be the absolute safest possible place to get apps, that place either deosn't exist ... or you have to write all of your own apps. or never download anything, otherwise we are all vulnerable. The only safe computer is one that is turned off. The Market is the place to get apps because is always there, easy to use, has thousands of apps, and simply works.
Well that's just great. Now that the grace period for iPad2 has lapsed, i can't return it and get one of these when they come out.

Oh well, I'll ebay to some schmuck. I'm sick of having a tablet that I can't do anything with.

That's what I have been saying... The Xoom is not a failure, it is one Small piece in a very big puzzle!

This is another piece in that very big Puzzle and eventually there will be 20 of Honeycomb tablets and most will be less expensive than the iPad...

This is a tide that will be too big for Apple to withstand.
@Peter Perry: this A500 is way weaker in almost anything than iPad2. Pragmatic buyer would not "save" $50 for such disadvantages.
@denisrs Actually, it isn't but you believe what you want.

I figure Moto will respond by knocking $50 to $100 off each model of the XOOM.

@Peter Perry

Consumers are not waiting for manufacturers to knock the price off by $50 - $100, they're buying the solid and proven iPad now, and in droves. Why? Simple, for its polished UI and 65,000 + iPad specific apps (compared to 17 for the competition with a wonky Honeycomb OS).

For the #1 music/media store iTunes.
For the #1 customer support at the many nearby Apple Stores.
For the longest battery life on such a device.
For the easy one-click secure credit card purchases.
For the best media integration on a tablet device, period!
For Airplay, which I use for controlling the kids media in their room from my bed using iPad/iPhone.
For the the largest selection of accessories and aftermarket products (like Airplay speakers).
List goes on...

In comparison, Xoom and this Acer A500 is offering up a tablet for the purpose of customizing your "desktop-like" screen, and playing with widgets. I'm already bored.

Fan boy by any chance?
Economister 9th Apr 2011
@dave95

Just asking
@Economister

I won't deny I am a fan of Apple's product (if that makes me a fanboy). But I was more pointing out the fact that things won't necessarily go the way Peter Perry is so convinced it will go with Android Tablet.

btw, I am anxiously waiting for Amazon to release their own Android Tablet cause I feel it will come the closest in offering the same unified experience I am currently enjoying with Apple.
@denisrs Weaker? How? What can't an ipad do the Xoom/acer et al can do? How about tabbed surfing? How about watching Flash instead of blank boxes? How about stereo sound? How about removable memory? How about 4G capability? How about significantly higher res cameras (withdual flash)? How about the ability to add all content wirelessly without ever connecting to a pc? How about adding content without being forced to use silly, expensive iTune$?

Oh, but the fanbois tells us "closed is good" Limited functionality is good. Second rate browser is better. Cheap camera - who cares? Ports? Who nees em they say - can always buy adapters for $50 that costs $0.50.

But it's cheaper they say (even when it's a ridiculous comparison - like saying a Chevy is cheaper than a Mercedes). And they say it has more apps - that 99% are useless junk escapes them...

Its not weak enough to suit me...
cornpie 10th Apr 2011
@denisrs I finally have a use for tablets. I have a group of 16 users that I want to be able to run one and only one app really well. I don't care if they can connect to the android market or any other market and I don't care if it has a camera - in fact I'd prefer if it didn't (and didn't have any other features I don't need) because that would keep us from paying for a feature we don't want or need.

So I think there is room for a dirt cheap tablet that costs around $250 and has nothing but the basic OS, about 8 - 16 GB memory (+ an sd slot) and a wi-fi connection. I think there are many businesses that would have a use for such a device.
@dave95 Not "consumers" as in all consumers, but as in apple fans - that vast vast vast majority of people on the planet have no idea what a tablet computer is - and once they do it will be because Android tablets have taught it to them - and Apple will, once again, but a minority platform for the arrogant and standoffish.

@cornpie,

I think I know exactly what you mean. You are looking for a less expensive and trouble prone alternative to having to haul a netbook or laptop around.

You want a portable display screen that provides for minimal input (because your app does not require it), One example of this would be some kind of warehouse inventory "appliance".

Unlike so many fanbois, you are taking a more pragmatic approach, I need to do this , and will this device allow me to accomplish that?

I for one would like to see more detailed specs on this tablet. Maybe I will talk my boss into looking at one. We (IT) has been hounded by (l)users regarding iPads ever since they were first available.

@dave95 I got news for you man... People are no longer willing to overpay for the iPad 2 so all the scammers that camped out to make a quick buck are getting stuck with them...

Why is this important? Because They're still not on store shelves and this is happening...

The way I see it, the whole tablet market is in its infancy and Apple has 2 months max to get these things on store shelves or the popularity of Android, the 4G radios and the lower pricing will overwhelm the market...

Another thing, there are 200k+ apps that run at the native android resolutions on my Xoom so the 65k really isn't all that daunting.

One more note, the iTunes music and books are DRM'd to hell so smart people don't buy from them... As for Movies, Netflix and Hulu Plus are coming to the XOOM and I don't know anybody personally that buys or rents movies from Apple... I guess what I'm saying is that iTunes is a paper empire and Amazon is the Great Equalizer. For the record, everyone I tell about the Apple lock down and amazon MP3 DRm Free music all like the Amazon version better.

@Peter Perry

Where are you getting your lies from? Apple currently controls the component supply chain, which makes it hard for competitors to "overwhelm the market".

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/perlow/apples-secret-ipad-advantage-the-supply-chain/15813

Sure you could download current Android phone apps for the Honeycomb tablets but the majority of those have problems scaling correctly on the larger 10" tablets. Badly stretched, off centered, off screen, extra large buttons etc. This is not a tablet experience.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/hands-on-with-the-motorola-xoom-five-initial-insights/45387

iTunes music went DRM free 3 years ago! And last I checked, there were 165 million iTunes users. iTunes is also the #1 video on demand (VOD) service. Time to update your friends on these info.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/06/itunes-going-primarily-drm-free/

Speaking about DRM, the reason you wont find Netflix or Hulu and other like services on Android yet (and Xoom) is the lack of DRM protection in the OS.
0 Votes
+ -
@dave95 No lies, just stopped using it years ago because of the DRM and have something like 100 songs I have to remove the DRM from because of that...

The Books have DRM for sure though and I prefer DRM Free epub format.

You know why they're #1 in video? Here's a clue, bundling! I have like 15. Movies from iTunes but they all came free with my Bluray movies!

As for the lack of DRM in honeycomb, I am well aware but those two vendors are working with Motorola and the netflix is actually almost done.

As for Supply, nah they bought 60% of the manufacturing capacity of the larger suppliers... They refused to sign up with Samsung and Samsung has a plant coming online that will not only make up thay difference they will be Super Amoled Displays and that right there ends any doubt which tablets will have inferior displays (here's a hint, Apple will be one of the inferior).

Oh and as for the scaling, the only apps that have that issue are the ones built for Android 1.5 which is a very small portion of the market as Android didn't start to really take off until 2.0 hit.

I have 4G with verizon's new 4G mifi card and I use it for my Ipad and my MBA. No need for 4G built into a tablet. My mifi card works with my computer and my ipad. If I have a thunderbolt phone the same thing can happen.
@Peter Perry The only thing inferior appears to be your intellect. You are simply a small minded person that can not see beyond their own bias/beliefs/lies no matter how much information is provided. You apparently wouldn't know what a fact was if it walked up and slapped you in the face. There are definite advantages for each of the OEM's devices as well as each of the available OSs but you can't open your mind enough to realize that. It's people like you that the terms hater and fanboy were created to describe, truly pathetic.
and 250 Gig hard drive for 300, I should be able to get a 10 inch tablet with dual core Arm and 16 Gig flash for 300.

Holy shyster Batman, I think I just found my next purchase.
@MisterMiester I was wondering how Jason completely missed this, with all of his talk of a decent Android device finally coming in for cheaper than the iPad 2 basic model, considering the Transformer will have a better display than the Iconia A500 (same resolution, but IPS panel), and better battery life (about 1.5 hours more than the A500), yet will apparently be $50 cheaper. Looks like these will both be released about the same time, too.

Robert Hahn 9th Apr 2011
@Whyaylooh We don't really know the U.S. pricing on the Transformer. The $400 number people are talking about comes from a supposedly "leaked" web page on Best Buy that was subsequently taken down. Well, there was a "leak" like that on the XOOM, plus a supposed picture of an aisle-end display at Costco showing XOOMs for $539. None of that ever happened. It looks as if these "leaks" are like the "trial balloons" that politicians use to gauge reaction.

MisterMiester Updated - 9th Apr 2011
@Robert Hahn

Do you honestly believe that ASUS would price their tablet higher than Acer? Of course not, their pricing will be competitive if not lower. Just look at the netbook market between these two companies for any indication of how the tablet market will pan out.

How low remains to be seen, but $400 doesn't seem unrealistic.

Edit:

BTW that aisle-end display was Sam's Club, not Costco, plus it was just a mock up for in-store training.

Very nice concept, but the Asus specs are better for only $100.00 more if pricing holds true. I do believe you'll see the Transformer at $400 since that price was also spotted on Amazon and Newegg according to one of the threads on XDA-Developers. On Amazon UK you can already pre order the tablet for 379.00.

Edit: That's 379.00 Pounds Sterling. ZDNet scripting keeps removing the Pound symbol.
