Google has eradicated those bogus malware sites from its search results.

As noted by Sunbelt Software on Monday and Tuesday, Google search results were being gamed by hackers. The goal: Get you to visit a malware loaded site.

Late Wednesday, Sunbelt followed up with a few more comments.

The takeaways:

  • Google nixed the malware sites from its search results;
  • The attack was apparently focused at Google;
  • And Sunbelt called the attack crafty.

Sunbelt's blog post has some specific JavaScript code worth checking out for those of you that know what you're looking at. Disclosure: I don't.

Sunbelt referred to the attack as SEO poisoning. I wonder if that's something we'll see more of in 2008.

  • Yet another catch phrase...

    I wonder if this will reduce any of the sites that are obviously made for adsense and therefore, offer only more ads to click on rather than any information...?

    SEO Poisoning... could that turn out to be a new catch phrase like DNS Poisoning? http://whiptech.com/services.security/DNS.Poison.html

  • "bogus malware sites"? So they left the REAL malware sites?

    "Google now says it has eradicated the bogus malware from its searches". Meaning, it left the REAL malware in its searches???

    This article is interesting, but it would be nice if writers used the "telephone test" on their scribblings. This means read them aloud (not "out loud", by the way) to the uninvolved. They could have easily caught this error.
