Hot off the wire: Windows XP SP3 available from Windows Update

Summary: From Paul Miller at Engadget:"At last the moment you've been waiting for. Microsoft wants to hit your version of Windows with an update, and this time you don't have to go rummaging around the internet to find it: just fire up Windows Update and let Microsoft do all the work.

From Paul Miller at Engadget:

"At last the moment you've been waiting for. Microsoft wants to hit your version of Windows with an update, and this time you don't have to go rummaging around the internet to find it: just fire up Windows Update and let Microsoft do all the work. After a few false starts XP users get the much-anticipated SP3 update, which promises speed boosts and some of the fancy security features found in Vista. If you're a Vista user you're also in luck, since Microsoft has restarted its Vista SP1 distribution after some compatibility problems with Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Sounds like a party."

Hopefully tomorrow morning Larry and I will have full details on what was patched and why and we can talk about some of the "fancy security features" found in Vista that weren't previously in XP SP2.  Looking forward to the speed boost, I could sure use it!

  • I will compare it to XP SP2

I will test it on a Virtual machine today along with different software and then compare with the same virtual machine with only XP SP2.

  • More secret updates?

    Maybe "forced" secret updates?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't!

    • No doubt, but...

... I guess since we decided, a LONG time ago, to dance with the Devil it's too late to complain about his song title selections.

    • Can't help you there

I'm going to take my time on this. My Vista machine is my personal use machine, it's running fine. My XP is at SP 2 and it's a corporate load set, so I can't help you here. While I look forward to using SP 3, it will be a bit for me.

Thanks for the info. I has SP3 installed by Windows Update yesterday and what a mess! It rendered my PC unuseable, put a bar down the side of my desktop and most of my shortcuts would not work. I had to repair reinstall XP Home!

Well, not all is wonderful. Thank goodness I set a restore point before downloading and installing SP3. After the installation was complete the little window came up and said the installation was sucessful and to reboot your computer. I selected restart and after selecting the 'f2' key to continue momentarilly the Windows screen with the black background appeared.

Then the blue screen of death and it started to reboot all over again. After finally getting it to start in 'safe mode' I restored it to where it was before. The nerve!!! The update article said that SP3 was mostly all previous updates (which I am current on) and only a few minor new items that shouldn't affect your XP user experience. Another fine job by Microsoft!!!!!

    • I had to remove it!

After XP Sp3 installed and I clicked the restart button, I got the BSOD with an exception error full of zeros and about a mile long. No how many times I rebooted, I kept getting it. So I booted up in safe mode, went to Add Or Remove Programs and removed it (which took about 15 minutes to complete). Now my computer runs like it did before. No XP SP-3 for me, I guess!!!

      • Really? Obviously you're not a Windows user. Nice try.

BSOD? Hasn't seen that since Win9x.

        • No, YOU'RE the one who isn't an (experienced) Windows user

I do tech support for a school system that has over 1000 computers running XP and SP2, and while the BSOD isn't an everyday occurrence, it does pop up a lot more than we would like. It is just a fact of life when you have to use Windows. Accusing someone else of not being a Windows user just because your (one and only?) computer hasn't gotten a BSOD recently is just ignorant and shows that you don't have a lot of experience with Windows yourself. Try actually knowing what you are talking about before you shoot off your mouth next time.

          • BSOD pretty common for me

I have 7 computers at home running XP. I get a BSOD about once a week.

          • BSOD?

Not being sure what one is I don't know if I experienced it.

Please explain what the initials stands for?

            Thank you...

          • You're kidding, right?

BSOD? You've never heard of BSOD?

Blue Screen Of Death. A staple of many a Windows installation, though with XP MSFT has by and large done a good job of limiting their frequency (at least that's been my experience).

    • Windows XP SP3 Update

I guess I was lucky, yesterday I downloaded the update from Windows Update with no problems, everything worked fine! If I had read some of the things that went wrong as in this post I would have had some second thoughts about even trying it. All previous updates have been made with no problems, I don't see much difference in the SP2 version.

  • Thanks for the warnings, guys!

Since all my updates come through WinDiz update, rather than directly from Microsoft Update, I guess I will be staying away from this one.

For those of you who don't know about WinDiz update, first turn off automatic updates, fire up Firefox and go to the add-ons page, look up WinDiz update and install it. You then get to update what you want, when you want. On your schedule!

My Xp sp2 is up to date and works fine. The next computer I buy will be immediately moved to Linux.

    'Nuff said!

Just for the record, the school system I work for will NOT be installing this "upgrade". As I understand it, with the Vista-style verification system in it, getting Windows to run after we replaced a motherboard or a hard drive on a computer would require a phone call to Microsoft to reassure them that we are not trying to rip them off by running Windows on a new and unlicensed computer. We have enough work to do without that kind of hassle.

Is this the final version? I have a copy of the beta tried it on my P4 it actually seemed faster so I ran it for a month then loaded it on my main computer. I got the BSOD My main is a Core 2 athalon an I am running 2Gig memory. Sadly I could not get it to boot, even in safe mode It would reach a point and then restart I finally did a restore and lost everything because I did a reformat afraid there would be trouble from leftover files. Someone reassure me this wont happen again!

Seems that SP3 has been pulled from "Automatic Updates" screen, at least here in Australia...

    Anybody notice this also?
