On the heels of the serious explosions January 24th at Domodedovo airport in Moscow that killed 39 people and injured 178 more, Russian security services have released strange details of a failed New Years Eve plot to detonate an explosive in Red Square on New Year's Eve.

An unnamed woman, described as a 'black widow', was set to detonate a belt of explosives in Red Square when instead the explosive went off early inside the safe house she was in. The bomb, like a number of home made explosives used by militants or terrorists around the globe, was set to be triggered via a cell phone signal, specifically a text message.

According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, a text message wishing her a "Happy New Year" was sent to this woman by her mobile phone provider, causing the connected explosive device to detonate.

The term 'black widow' is used by the security agencies among others to describe the wives of slain militants from the Caucasus who have been identified as responsible for previous attacks including dual explosions in March of last year in Moscow's metro system. Reports also indicate that a black widow bomber was identified as part of the plot against Domodedovo airport, a witness reported seeing a woman dressed in black with a hand bag next to her that exploded. Also called Shahidka, these suicide bomb attackers are primarily young Islamic Chechen women.

The airport attacks earlier this month are not the first for the Domodedovo airport, in August of 2004 a pair of Chechen women destroyed two planes killing 90 people. In response to that, a number of security measures were instituted including one of the first uses of the controversial full body scanners more recently installed in U.S. airports. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev suggested that while the appropriate controls were in place in response to the 2004 attack, they had grown lax over time allowing the attack earlier this month.

This is of course a common problem faced by physical and information security personnel alike: as the memories of an incident, large or small, fade from view, keeping the funding for and resource investment in appropriate controls to prevent a similar disaster becomes increasingly difficult.

If this New Year's Eve attack was successful, the death toll in Red Square could have been in the hundreds.

    That's probably just about the most awesome story I've read today. If the amount of time it takes me to receive some messages is any indication, the irony is that text was probably sent almost a month ago.

  • Some "good" news (sort of) for a change

    Her husband was a militant, meaning he was a willing participant in a war (don't know the details, but he was not a civilian). He got killed in a war (skirmish - police action - riot, whatever you want to kill it), so she wanted to go out and kill innocent civilians in return?

Suicide bombers make no sense to me, but then again, suicide bombers are not looking to make any sense, they are just looking to make senseless grief.

At least this one didn't take out any innocent civilians, so it's a "good" news story. You know, if we had more suicide bombers like this one, we'd have less suicide bombers like this one.

      @Rexxrally : don't jump into conclusions so fast. The Chechen republic as many others in the world is held hostage by a government (Russia) for being extremely rich on one natural resource (oil). These people didn't asked for this faith, it was imposed upon them. Some remained passive, others took justice on their own hands, first as militia men (paramilitary) and others as auto martyrs.

Remember all those movies: Independence Day, Armageddon, I am Legend. Ironically, even in our--so called-modern cultures, we feed the martyr myth. In reality, things are always different and you don't avenge without killing innocent others.

I think that comprehending rather than repulsing these people will help us aid on a global solution. Else when will we be able to understand someone who's willing to sacrifice it's own life just to hurt others (won't make sense).

        @cosuna : If you have a problem with the Government, you go after the Government. If the Government brings in the military, and you have a problem with that, you go after the military.

        I still see no justifiable cause to go after innocent civilians.

      • Don't care what their beef is.

        @cosuna

        You don't go after civilians for any cause. I don't want to understand a terrorist. I want them dead. Basically their motives are political and using scare tactics to achieve an agenda. See we already understand them and we will still stop them.

    If she was a suicide bomber, then WTF did she need a remote trigger? My guess is she was going to leave the bomb behind and trigger with a text message or a call.

      either that or she was the mule and someone else was supposed to pull the trigger

      @MobyMud

      i was thinking the exact same thing

      as far as the mule theory goes i find that incredibly unlikely

      these kinds of plans are usually designed to be as simple as possible with as few people involved as can be allowed

      a mule/trigger man setup would constitute undue redundancy and the exacerbate process needlessly

        @shadowscrawl

        maybe... not knowing the full plans impedes seeing the full picture...

        if she were a mule, it would make sense that she would be one of several, and the trigger puller would trigger them all at approximately the same time...

        in that scenario a single trigger puller simplifies rather than complicates

        is that likely the case? i doubt it

      • RE: Killer Text: A Russian suicide bomber blows up by accident

        @shadowscrawl The bomb being triggered by a text message may have been the backup. It is not uncommon for suicide bombs to have a backup method that another terrorist can trigger it with in case the suicide bomber either has second thoughts or is potentially taken out and can not trigger the device.

    She was promised an afterlife with 72 virgins!~
    Not sure if accidentally blowing yourself up counts as a reward though.

  • Commercial message

    It wasn't until the second reading that I caught on to the fact that the triggering message was from her phone service provider, wishing all their subscribers a Happy New Year. So apparently their spam turned her into... well, Spam.

    This is what some of us like to call a "workplace accident." Too bad some of her militant friends weren't around.
