As everyone knows, patent litigation can suck the wind out of openness and innovation. In his recent blog, Joe Brockmeier sums up the insanity of IT-related patent lawsuits. Even Microsoft is a victim.

So far, it appears that Google, Oracle, and Sun may (repeat, may) be considering supporting CommerceNet's proposal to buy up the patents and put them away for the ages in an ironclad lockbox. No word from the others. Vendors talk a good game about "openness"; will they ante up when it counts?
