Yippee! Yahoo's board rejects Microsoft's bid

Summary: I hope this is not just an attempt to up the offer. Funny that Google news has not picked up on this yet.

I hope this is not just an attempt to up the offer. Funny that Google news has not picked up on this yet. I got an alert by text message from the WSJ.

Update. I see Henry Blodget continues to agree with me. He has amended his original arguments against the Yahoo acquisition to point out that MSFT should not be pursuing the ad market. Good thinking!

  • The reasons strike me as flimsy

My belief is that MS' bid overvalues, rather than undervalues Yahoo. If any shareholders agree, there may be lawsuits. Would be nice if Yahoo simply said "no" and everyone dropped the subject (since the bid is a colossally bad idea for everyone but Yahoo shareholders), but I don't think that's going to happen.

    • Or not

They can always take Microsoft up on its offer. These things are run as a tender/accept protocol. If the Board agrees, it's all over right then but otherwise individual stockholders can take MS up on their offer and if enough do, the Board is out of the loop.

Barring a poison pill, of course.

    • I agree

On both points. Big expensive waste of efforts right at the apparent beginning of a recession.

  • Always assuming

... that Microsoft takes "no" for an answer.

That's far from given; this was originally characterized as a "hostile takeover."

    • They should...

...but I don't think Ballmer could take the embarrassment. I expect MS to go forward with a hostile takeover simply because the CEO can't stand to have anyone say no to him (his own stockholders might be next).

    Wow!
This is big new people, big news. Unbelievable. I was kinda hoping that Yahoo would reject it and that is because I think that combining those two companies would do neither of them any good. But this is amazing. Yahoo is essentially giving Microsoft a kick in the face rejecting the biggest tech deal ever. Or at least one of the biggest. I wonder if Microsoft will rise the bid or go away with their tail between their legs.
