New Relic adds systems management to its portfolio

By | November 14, 2011, 3:16am PST

Summary: New Relic in the past has focused on application performance management for web applications. It recently added a level of systems management to its tool set.

From time to time, I have the opportunity to speak with New Relic about its web application performance management product. This time the topic was systems management for systems supporting those Web applications.

What does New Relic do?

New Relic is known for offering tools that can monitor and display application performance in real time in an easy to understand and use dashboard. Alerts can also be sent for specific performance issues and outages.

New Relic offers a number of tools that allow organizations to improve the reliability, performance and scalability of Web applications. Some of the product’s capabilities are:

  • New Relic’s products can monitor database performance (SQL or NoSQL)
  • Trace Web transactions, and track overall availability
  • The tools also make it possible to map out the architecture of the application and show the date and time each component was deployed.
  • Profile Java applications and help developers optimize perceived performance
  • Analyze Web application scalability

What’s new?

In the past, New Relic didn’t focus much attention on the underlying operating system or hardware. IT administrators would be forced to use other management tools to learn how Web applications were interacting with that layer of IT infrastructure.

The recent update adds the ability to monitor and display server and operating system resources as well.

While New Relic is not trying to replace the tools offered by the operating system or hardware supplier.

Those who rely upon New Relic will find this addition welcome.

... even though it was known right from the start that this is software issue given the fact iOS 5 influenced this way on some of iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs devices. Also, Apple itself said that this is software issue.
