I'm heading to San Francisco for the Linuxworld Expo/Next Generational Datacenter conference. I'll post from there this week.

While at the event, I'm moderating a panel dicussion on "Virtualization 2.0", whatever that means. Wanna know more?

Here's how the conference syllabus describes the panel

Virtualization 2.0
The benefits of virtualization for server consolidation have been highly touted, but next-generation virtualization companies are leveraging the technology to address other applications including testing, security, and data access and storage. Virtualization has enabled these emerging techn companies to develop new methods for IT organizations to tackle old problems.

This next generation in virtualization beyond server consolidation will be discussed by a panel of experts from leading implementers like StackSafe, Trigence, Xkoto and Scalent Systems.

Questions for the panel

I'll be putting the following questions to the panel to hear their collective wisdom on the topic.

  • What is virtualization 2.0?
  • How does this notion differ from "grid computing", "matrix computing", "cloud computing", etc.?
  • How does this notion differ from what's been done in the realm of mainframes and midrange systems for decades?
  • What factors accelerate organizations' move in that direction?
  • What factors inhibit that move?
  • What can organizations do now to head in that direction?

If you are planning on attending the conference, please stop by and say hello. I'll be the one wearing the blue Kusnetzky Group shirt.
