VMware acquires Integrien, TriCipher for IT-as-a-Service Era

By | August 31, 2010, 10:43am PDT

VMware has acquired two companies to help it address the third phase of virtualization — IT-As-A-Service.

During the opening keynote at VMWorld today, Steve Herrod, CTO of VMWare, announced the acquisition of Integrien, a provider of real-time application and infrastructure performance and analytics.

Herrod said the third phase of virtualization — optimizing IT production for business consumption — will be addressed by a new product called vCloud Director and Irvine, Calif. -based Integrien’s Alive branded predictive performance analytics platform for the real-time hybrid cloud.

“Integrien [offers] a new style of management  … and proactive analystics,” Herrod said, noting that the technology offers a level of abstraction, automation and visibility that cloud consumers need.

Later, VMware executives announced the acquisition of TriCipher, which will deliver single sign-on access across all VMware products for the new generation of software-as-a-service applications.

VMWare also launched today a new portfolio of security products for the next generation IT-as-a-Service  – vShield Endpoint, vShield App and vShield Edge — also today.

VMware’s press release today described TriCiphere’s value as this:

TriCipher, a leader in secure access management and enterprise identity federation for cloud hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) applications.
