VMWare is turning up the heat on its competitors with a host of new virtualization products for the cloud.

There are six new products that will be officially introduced at VMWorld today, and they are VMWare vCloud Director and the vShield security products portfolio, including VMware vShield Edge, VMware vShield App and VMware vShield Endpoint.

vCloud Director, which VMWare describes as a new model for consuming infrastructure services, extends the resource pooling capabilities of VMware vSphere. Using this, customers will be able to create  “virtual data centers," described by VMWare as "pools of compute, network and storage resources with defined management policies, SLAs and pricing. "

"IT organizations can offer these VDCs – along with catalogs of other infrastructure and application services such as virtual appliances, VMs, and OS images – to users through fully automated self-service access," according to a release issued today.

VMware also launched a portfolio of three security products under the brand name vShield, which covers IT security needs for the edge and for cloud deployment.

The virtualization leader also announced two new service offerings, which may not be exciting to its roster of consulting and intergration partners.

The first, vCloud Datacenter Services, is aimed at helping enterprises create hybrid clouds, and extend their datacenters to external clouds such as Amazon's EC2. The second offering, VMware vCloud Consulting Services, assist customers with a broad range of cloud consulting needs.
