Jay Meattle of the web statistics firm compete has done an interesting analysis of the growth rates of MySpace vs YouTube. He concludes that YouTube's rate of growth exceeds that of MySpace - i.e. essentially it is more viral!.

It took YouTube 16 months to reach 20 million users, but it took MySpace 25 months. So YouTube was nine months quicker to reach that 20 million users mark.

Jay speculates that if YouTube's growth continues at this rate, then it will break 50 million users within 12 months - making it among the top 10 websites in the world. Of course, YouTube was also nearly 3 times as expensive as MySpace (Google paid $1.65B compared to News Corp paying $580M for MySpace last year). So Google has paid a premium for that fast growth!

It could also be that YouTube's growth was helped by the growth of the Web market in general - i.e. YouTube came after MySpace, so they took advantage of higher growth rates in the Web market. In any case, YouTube's growth has been phenomenal however you look at it. Will we see another big website with that rate of growth in this era? It's doubtful.

  • YouTube is THE business model

I am proud to have a Director Account at YouTube, but I'm not paid to promote them. Let me say that YouTube finally gave people what they wanted.

YouTube is a web site where you can DO things, not BUY or READ things. You can VIEW so many items that you missed on TV or never knew existed in video (music videos by The Incredible String Band, Caroliner Rainbow, videos with Cory Doctorow, Doc Searls, Robin Miller, Seth Godin, etc.).

YouTube is the opposite of a commercial site, though it's being monetized with ads. That is okay. We are so spoiled with free stuff online, with no "commercial interruptions". But they need to pay for bandwidth.

So the future is giving users what they want, and giving groups what they need, via fast, easy, and abundant relevant content.

User generated content makes the hardest part easy.

  • Any other web developers jealous??

Clearly I'm not the only one out there that wishes they could have their site take off like that!! Gotta love the power of social networking / viral marketing.

  • Indeed

I really think it is, well said. Its business model is flawless. The user is the backbone of the system.

  • Like ive said before.

I ( Keith knutsson ) believe Amazing viral market. All it did was take the primitive email forwarding and put it in a mainstream website that everyone can contribute to. Congradts.

Shows off the power of video content, motion graphics, viral loops, distribution of tv on the web. Came across a venture backed firm called http://www.realviewtv.com that is helping smbs in regional markets gain the same time of first mover advantage adding video to a web-site...
