Dodocase: the best case for your iPad

By | August 6, 2010, 2:15pm PDT

When Apple releases a new product, there are a few companies that build accessories that far outperform Apple’s accessories. Dodocase is no different.

I had a chance to speak with Craig Dalton, who has been working with Dodocase. These guys have built a beautiful iPad case that looks like a book.

Each Dodocase is handmade with a local bookbinder in San Francisco. If you want to buy one now, it will take between 4-6 weeks to get one, because they are so backed up on orders. One of the bottlenecks is the bamboo… they want to use the highest quality products to build these cases.

We are in a cultural shift in reading. We are going from ink on paper to pixels on a screen. There is an emotional element to it. Having a case like this kinda brings back the nostalgia of reading an actual book.

“We are taking the software model to hardware. We want to have a passionate community of followers, and let our customers be our advocates,” said Dalton.

Dalton says their inventory will increase in the coming months. They are also working on a website redesign with more community elements. Later in the year, there will be more colors.

If you don’t like putting away your iPad on the plane, get a Dodocase so the flight attendant thinks you are reading a book.

I got mine today (I ordered it in late June). I know think my Apple case and a sleeve that I bought as temporary storage for my iPad are jealous.

My Dodocase is wonderful!

The Portenzo case is built much better...

The bamboo frame and the corners that hold the iPad in are much better than the foam on the dodocase. Shorter delivery times, but only until word gets out... They also round the corners more and have some color choices. http://shop.portenzo.com

I bought a DODOCase a while back, it arrived mid-june, I've been loving it ever since.
I remote work, mostly from home, but sometimes I head in to Melbourne CBD (about an hour or so on the train) & work with friends.
I tend to use the iPad on the commute as it helps me get all the emails / blogs / etc out of the way so that I can get into the work as soon as I get to the city.
The iPad is still pretty rare here, it's only really tech geeks that have them, so whenever a non-tech geek sees you using one, they're always like "ooh! show me it! let me see how awesome it is!". It's fun to show others new devices & see their faces light up (especially when you let them play Real Racing HD), but at the same time, it's also a little annoying if you're trying to get stuff done.
The DODOCase is great as it fools most fellow commuters into thinking I'm just using a Moleskine, so I don't get as many requests to have a play with it ;p.

I've also had a couple of occasions where I've gone out & without thinking left my iPad on the passenger seat of my car. Thankfully, people are quite desperate enough to break into a car to steal what they think is a moleskine, so it was still there when I got back to the car ;p.
