I'll be at SxSW this year covering the panels, parties, and people. Every year, Microsoft's BizSpark Accelerator finds young companies to showcase and compete against each other in various categories.

The candidates are in for 2010, and I have summarized the five most interesting startups:

5. Collecta

For over 10 years, Google has been the first place you go to find information online. But as things get faster, we want to know what's going on right now. Collecta takes a stab at real-time search:

You just type in a search term and Collecta goes to work, collecting real-time results as they come in. You can filter out blog posts, comments, Tweets, photos and videos. They also list popular trending results for you to explore.

4. Gamesalad

It's fun to play games, but it's even more fun to create games.

Gamesalad is making it easy for anyone to create iPhone or iPad games with a drag-and-drop interface.

These guys had a competition at Macworld to see who could make the best games. They are doing big things, keep an eye on them.

3. Bu.mp

Bu.mp is simple. Connect to someone and share information by simply bumping your phones together. These guys are developing some cool APIs that programmers can play with to let users interact in new and exciting ways. Bluetooth is so yesterday.

2. Foodspotting

I'm addicted to Foodspotting. Simply upload pictures of food you have eaten and tell Foodspotting where you ate it. You can search restaurants and find awesome pictures of food. You can search different genres of food by geo-location and find the tastiest treat.

If you are a foodie, this is your new favorite website.

1. Khush

Khush is a reverse karaoke app for the iPhone. You sing or rap into the phone the applications finds music to go along with your vocals. I am dyin to try this one.

  • Thanks!

Thank you so much for mentioning Collecta as one of the Top 5 most interesting SXSW 2010 BizSpark finalists.

One recently released innovation folks might want to take a look at is Collecta's Easy Widget Builder which can be found at http://widget.collecta.com .
Enter a search term, (and a title and iframe size if you wish), click the "Build Widget" button, grab the code, and place it on your site. Immediately your website will feature a Streaming Real-Time Newsfeed around whatever topic you wish.

If this reply could include iframes, would have embedded one on the term ZDNet right in this post. ;-)

Thank you very much once again!

Khush might be the coolest thing I've ever seen and
I'm definitely going to be dropping some AWFUL music
ASAP. Out of all of these 5 companies, I really like
what Bump is working with. It's a new technology that
anyone will be able to use if they can think of a
creative way to incorporate it. I think people are
going to find some incredible ways to build an app
    using that.

I don't know much about GameSalad but anytime you give
an average computer person the ability to create
something of their own (think wordpress) you give
yourself a lot of potential. That's the other one
    that sticks out to me.

FoodSpotting looks like it could be pretty cool but
the two I listed above I think have a wide range of
    potential.
