Arguably, a workplace collaboration platform might not be worth anything without real-time functionality these days, so it was imperative for Citrix to step up its game.

Podio Chat is basically comprised of instant messaging as well as audio and video chat.

The mobile and cloud services provider asserted that Podio is now "the first collaboration service of its kind" to offer such communications features "in context." Citrix further defined that Podio Chat offers more "meaning" to ad hoc conversations surrounding online work projects and business processes.

Citrix added that Podio Chat offers more visibility than other online collaboration platforms, offering the ability to see which contacts are online across the entire company ecosystem (whether it be internal employees or external contractors or partners) included in the same Podio workspace.

When available, Podio Chat will be supported by the platform's mobile apps for iOS and Android as well as a number of third-party services connected to the program, including Google Drive, Sugarsync, Dropbox, Box, and Microsoft SkyDrive.

The instant messaging aspect to Podio Chat is available immediately while the video and audio components will be added this summer.
