iPhones sold in HK won't get China warranty

Summary: Apple in China will not support warranty repairs for iPhone 5c and 5s bought in Hong Kong, according to staff working in the company's Shanghai store.

It seems that Apple in China will not support any warranty maintenance or repairs for iPhone 5c and 5c units bought in Hong Kong.

iPhone 5c

An staff member in the company's Shanghai store explained that iPhone 5s sold in Hong Kong was the generic model, A1530, which was different from the A1528 model sold in the Chinese mainland. Therefore, iPhone 5s bought in Hong Kong will not enjoy free parts replacement or repair--a common maintenance practice for Apple products--even if the product is still under warranty, according to a NetEase report. The rule also applies to the maintenance of iPhone 5c for similar reasons.

Whether iPhone 5s and 5c models bought in Hong Kong will receive warranty support in China in future remains "unknown", according to Apple's Genius Bar staff and customer relies.

It is unlikely, however, that mainland consumers will stop purchasing iPhone 5s and 5c in Hong Kong due to the notable pricing disparity between the two markets. In Hong Kong, the iPhone 5s 16GB model is priced at only HK$5,588 (US$721), compared to the 5,288 yuan (US$864) price-tag in China, giving huge profits for parallel traders.

The gold-colored iPhone 5s is still sought after by Chinese consumers. In Hong Kong, some digital shops posted advertisements outside their shops, saying they will purchase gold-colored iPhone 5s 16G model for up to HK$8,800 ($1,135.2) per set from consumers.

The silver and black iPhone 5s are less popular. In fact, China Telecom in Beijing cut the retail prices of iPhone 5s 16G to 4,988 yuan (US$815.5) a set, 300 yuan (US$50) cheaper than the official price set by Apple. The pricecuts only apply to the silver and black iPhone 5s, while the gold-colored model remains unchanged.

  • MISINFORMATION AND LIES FROM APPLE REPAIR SHANGHAI CHINA

I went into the same Apple Store on Nanjing Road Shanghai today to repair my Australian bought iPhone.

The "Genius" Bar staff and manager told me they ONLY repair HK and China bought iPhones. No other countries. They said they previously US, Canadian and UK bought iPhone repairs also.

I showed them this article, and pointed and they said THIS ARTICLE WAS WRONG, and they refused to repair my under warranty iPhone.

Called Apple Care. They said actually the store SHOULD repair my iPhone under the Apple Travel Customer scheme. They still refused to repair my iPhone and actually argued with Apple Care on the phone ("you don't know China laws).

After 5 HOURS of arguing, some guy looked up repair policy, and international phones CAN BE REPAIRED IN CHINA UNDER TRAVELLER WARRANTY POLICY.

Apple "genius" bar guy THEN APOLOGISED FOR WASTING MY 5 HOURS AND TOLD ME I HAD TO BRING MY PHONE TO APPLE AUTHORISED REPAIR CENTER ANYWAY. Can't repair my phone. WTF.

Oh... He then also suggested I buy a "CHINA APPLE IPHONE" so I "DONT HAVE THIS PROBLEM IN FUTURE".

Then went to Pudong Apple Store. Got phone replaced no problems straightaway. Wtf.

In short, whether you can or can't repair your phone depends on the "discretion" of the staff you deal with.

  • DON'T GO APPLE NANJING ROAD STORE SHANGHAI FOR REPAIRS

Just to clarify my typos above ...

The Genius Bar Manager (name is Leo) and his staff at Apple Nanjing Road said, "WE CAN ONLY REPAIR HK AND CHINA BOUGHT IPHONES"

He said he had rejected repairs for US, Canada, Europe and my Australia bought iPhone.

When I called Apple Care China -AND-Apple Care Australia to get him to repair my phone, he argued with Apple Care on the phone, and said they "DON'T KNOW THE LAWS IN CHINA".

I actually had to get a printout of the Apple Customer Care Policy number, showing him and his staff that my phone COULD AND SHOULD be repaired under warranty.

After wasting my 5 hours arguing and calling Apple Care on phone, he apologised and asked me to go "TO AN ACTUAL APPLE REPAIR CENTER" as he said, "APPLE STORE NANJING ROAD IS NOT AN AUTHORISED APPLE REPAIR CENTER ANYWAY".

He then asked me to buy a China Apple iPhone to "NOT HAVE THESE MISUNDERSTANDINGS in future".

After he wasted my 5 hours, I went to Pudong Apple Store and just replaced my iPhone under warranty straightaway. Apple Nanjing Road Genius Bar are liars/poor customer service. Don't go there to repair your apple products. Go Pudong Store.
