After launching in Europe earlier this year, Firefox OS has now landed in Latin America.

Telefonica's local brands in Colombia and Venezuela started selling two Firefox OS phones on Thursday: the Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open.

In Colombia, the devices cost COP 199,900 ($102) on prepay or COP 99,900 ($53) on a 12 month contract at COP 39,900 ($21) per month. In Venezuela, the Fire is priced at VEF Bs 1,739 and the ZTE Open Bs 1,159.

Thursday's launch sees the number of countries where Firefox OS devices are available rising to four.

Telefonica first began selling the handsets in Spain in early July, with Deutsche Telekom's Polish mobile operator T-Mobile stocking the Fire later that month. When the devices launched in Poland, Mozilla, the organisation behind Firefox OS, announced that Germany and Greece were to be the next European countries to get the handsets.

Mozilla has now added one more country to its list: it said on Thursday that it expects to also launch Firefox OS in Brazil in the fourth quarter of this year.

Telefonica had 71 million mobile users in Brazil at the end of June, compared to 11.7 million in Colombia and 11.8 million in Venezuela.

I really hope this becomes a hit. An OS from a not-for-profit charitable organization that is based upon open standards is an all-around win.

  • Totally agree

I think, in the near future, the third position in mobile os will be a fight between wp - firefox os - tizen - ubuntu os

And the real winner will be innovation
