Flying doctors bring computer aid to Africa

Rural hospitals in Kenya are benefiting from telemedicine made possible by donated computers from UK companies
Written by Andrew Donoghue, Contributor

IT charity Computer Aid International is working with the African Medical & Research Foundation (AMREF) to supply rural hospitals in Kenya with PCs, digital cameras and internet connectivity.

By allowing doctors in remote medical centres to connect with specialists in the main cities such as Nairobi and Mombassa, patients can be treated in situ and avoid costly and dangerous travel on often poorly maintained roads.

Backed up by AMREF's flying doctor service, Kenya's remote hospitals are no longer quite as remote as they once were.

On a recent trip to Kenya, ZDNet.co.uk was lucky enough to experience how something as simple as being able to email a request for supplies can make all the difference in a country where it can take a week for the postal system to deliver a letter.
